Hills made sure of an appointment at Maitland Sportsground next week with a comprehensive result. Maitland looked like they were going to continue their hot run when Glebe kicked off and as Jayden Butterfield took the ball back to the defensive line but spotted that O'Donnell had space and offloaded and then O'Donnell fed the support for a sprint down the sideline Henry Penn backed up on the inside to produce a fill length try from the opening play of the game.
After Glebe responded with its opening try, it continued to apply pressure and found the Maitland right hand defence short on a couple occasions and converted scoring opportunities. At 24-16 Glebe in control but Maitland dug deep closed it to 24-22 when right on 3/4 time the teams had a vigorous exchange following a high tackle on O'Donnell. Maitland evened the score from the penalty kick on resumption.
It was back and forth after that and with about 10 to go it looked like Glebe were setting up for a field goal when they were awarded a penalty to reestablish the 2 point margin. Maitland had a few more stints in the Glebe zone but the defence smothered every spark.
In the early game, University was very impressive and ran up a 28-0 lead by half time. East Campbelltown only managed 1 win this season, and that by a goal when Helensburgh had to back up from a mid week game. There was a presentation to Shannon Gallant after the game so he looks like he has retired. He certainly did not let them down today but this club needs a huge recruitment program if they are going to continue to compete at this level.
Australian 7's star, Maurice Longbottom, was sitting with his former Coogee Wombat teammates in an area with signage stating that it was the "Natoli" Hill.
Hills did everything possible to qualify for the semis but in the end it was the point they dropped to Uni that cost them a spot. Despite a drubbing from Belrose earlier in the season, Cronulla Caringbah are entitled to be favourites against Belrose next week.
