I applaud the introduction of Sowie into a consultancy kicking coach role. It’s a massive positive & you only have to see the teams with the best kicking game & have a strong defence structure, dominate the competition.
I’m sure Hook will be looking towards stiffening our brittle defence as a major priority next!

Totally agree with you, it’s a very welcome return of a former player who wasn’t shown a lot of respect by Steve Price. Aside from the sentiment of his return Sowie will be able to offer a lot of experience & advice to Amone, Sullivan & Clune. He had one of the best kicking games ever seen, I’m no Gould fan but I remember him saying in commentary Soward could pick a safe with his left boot.

Dragons premiership-winner Jamie Soward appointed to club's coaching staff

The Dragons have turned to the man who spearheaded their drought-breaking 2010 premiership to reboot their halves, with new coach Anthony Griffin appointing Jamie Soward to his staff.

Soward was the game managing general who polarised fans yet became the perfect man to deliver Wayne Bennett's game plan in that famous 2010 team.

His kicking game in particular was the envy of the competition, with Soward perfecting the art of forcing opponents to start their sets deep in their own territory, grinding them into the dirt.

In many ways it makes him the perfect man for this Dragons side, with Griffin inheriting two big name halves who have rarely played well alongside each other.

Ben Hunt and Corey Norman have both been heavily criticised over the past two seasons but both are Origin players, so there's no denying their talent.

Soward has been given the job of finding the key to unlock it, with a focus on game management. Choosing and executing the right kicks at the right time will be a focus and few would deny Soward is an expert in that field.

2020 Team Reviews: St George Dragons 2020 Review
"I'm not going in there to reinvent the wheel with Corey and Ben," Soward told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"I'm going in there to help refine their game, help them make better decisions and also teach those young guys coming through like Jayden Sullivan, Junior Amone and also Adam Clune.

"I'll try and help show them how you can wrestle back momentum and how you can keep momentum with your kicking game and game management."

While the Soward appointment makes sense from the point-of-view that he's a respected ex-Dragons player and has the skills the Dragons lack down to a fine art, there's another side to it that makes for a hell of a reconciliation story.

Soward finished his career under Griffin at the Panthers and the pair fell out spectacularly.

In August 2018 as a guest on Nine's Sports Sunday, Soward was blunt in backing Penrith's decision to axe Griffin and bring back Ivan Cleary.

"I only spent a short time with Anthony Griffin, but from what I found he was very poor in his communication skills," Soward said at the time.

"The game plans were not conducive to the style of football that those guys out there wanted to play and we only saw the best out of the Penrith Panthers when they got behind.

"You'll see the players play a lot freer now."

Soward added that Griffin had "underachieved" at both the Panthers and the Broncos, where he was head coach from 2011-2014, and had falsely taken credit for the talented young players he introduced to first grade.

"They had won junior competitions. The academy that they built was all in place before Anthony Griffin got there," Soward said.

"This is what I took offence to - in 2014 we were one game short of the grand final. That to me seemed like a pretty good place [to be in].

"They debuted a lot of juniors that had won the 20s competition. 2015 in the NRL side wasn't great but they still had plenty of young guys come through."

Soward told the Herald that his feelings about Griffin had changed since the pair started working together for Nine radio.

"Anthony and I had a chat working at 2GB the last year and a half," Soward said.

"I've said it before publicly, I don't have many regrets throughout my career but one of those was that I didn't understand or see the game how he did.

" ... I'm very thankful. We've both shown there are no hard feelings there and we've loved working together at 2GB and we're going to continue to work hard to get the Dragons back inside that eight."

St George Illawarra have turned to the man that led the club to its maiden premiership in 2010 to help resurrect the club's stuttering attack next season.

Incoming coach Anthony Griffin has appointed former Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward as a specialist halves and kicking consultant to work closely with Ben Hunt and Corey Norman in 2021.

Soward was instrumental in the Dragons' 2010 premiership triumph, proving himself as one of the best game managers of his time with his long and short kicking game.

Griffin hopes those attributes will prove beneficial as the club looks to reignite the careers of out-of-sorts halves Ben Hunt and Corey Norman.

"Ben and Corey have played and competed at the highest level for a long time, so my job isn't to come in and holler and scream and change those guys at all," Soward told the Herald.

"It's to go in and listen to how they see the game and how they feel out there and provide some ideas and game management stuff that may be able to help them. I'm not going in there to reinvent the wheel with Corey and Ben.

I'll try and help show them how you can wrestle back momentum and how you can keep momentum with your kicking game and game management."

Soward fell out with Griffin at the end of his playing career after the coach showed him the door in the playmaker's final season at the Penrith Panthers back in 2016.

However Soward admits his feelings towards Griffin have changed dramatically since the pair started working together in the media.

"Anthony and I had a chat working at 2GB the last year and a half," Soward said. "I've said it before publicly, I don't have many regrets throughout my career but one of those was that I didn't understand or see the game how he did.

"I've since been able to sit down and talk to the guy away from footy. Dealing with a divorce and some other issues, I didn't give Anthony enough time of the person that I am now. He sees footy very similarly to the way I see it.

"I'm very thankful. We've both shown there are no hard feelings there and we've loved working together at 2GB and we're going to continue to work hard to get the Dragons back inside that eight."

Soward will also work closely with new assistant coach Matt Elliott, who he also works with as analysts at NRL.com, to help change the club's fortunes. Soward has been critical of the Dragons throughout 2020 in his role in the media but believes the criticism has been warranted given the club's woes.

"Hopefully I play a small role in getting that club back up to being successful," Soward said. "It means a lot to me because I won a premiership there and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for them.

"The Dragons have been unsuccessful and under-achieved the last couple of years, there's no secret about that. I think whilst I've been harsh at times on players and the club, I think they have been fair comments as well. it's never been personal. I've already started working in preparation for when preseason starts and excited to put on the training gear."

What I would give to get Coops into our system.

You can’t teach what Gaz has he was blessed but Coops defence was just something out of this world.

This tackle will live forever in Dragons folk lore. Coops literally lifted the Souths player up & stopped him from scoring. Unbelievable

Great to hear.. Young enough to be able to understand the current generation of players but old enough not to have also been playing with any of them (I think..)

Should also put to bed that whole avenue that Hook is a bad coach because “Soward said so when he left Penrith”

Only Trent Merrin I believe but you have a great point.
