I completely understand if there's concern over his defence but how does going to the bench help. Wouldn't it be better to start or drop out entirely? Keeping a back for HIA or injuries so you can move May if needed?

I would have Leniu on the bench personally, seeing how we need to dominate the middle to win this game, but its a harsh call to leave Naden completely out. Not good at all to have this situation on the eve of a Grand Final, as Gus suggested.

Tyrone May will be thrown into the Penrith Panthers' starting side for Sunday's NRL grand final and given the task of shutting down Melbourne's lethal left-edge duo of Justin Olam and Josh Addo-Carr.

The Herald can reveal Penrith will roll the dice for a second consecutive week, with coach Ivan Cleary opting to start May at right-centre alongside winger Brian To'o, winning the nod over Brent Naden. Naden was named at centre on Tuesday, but the 24-year-old will start the game on the bench as part of a late reshuffle to the minor premiers' line-up.

Penrith are reluctant to go into the game without a specialist outside-back option on a bench that will also include Kurt Capewell, Moses Leota and former Roosters prop Zane Tetevano.

Veteran Dean Whare, 20-year-old prop Spencer Leniu, five-eighth Matt Burton and back-up hooker Mitch Kenny are all expected to be dropped from the 21-man squad Cleary named earlier in the week.

Despite starting at centre in the six weeks leading into last week's preliminary final, Naden was dropped to the bench for the clash with the Rabbitohs and didn't feature in his side's 20-16 win.

The Panthers were privately concerned with Naden's defence following the team's narrow semi-final win against the Roosters in the opening week of the play-offs. The Wellington junior was responsible for his side conceding the opening try of the match to veteran centre Josh Morris.

I’m stunned we’d go into a wet grand final with a specialist back on the bench, there’s every chance he won’t play a single minute just like last week. Cleary often doesn’t play his 17th man, but for a game that’s going to be an absolute grind this makes no sense.

There’s no need to do that as Capewell can play centre. A specialist back on the bench is a risk. This is probably the weakest part of Ivan’s coaching, how he uses interchanges.

The only thing that might make sense is if Capewell has been dropped for Leniu. But seeing as how Martin burnt himself out last week, that’s also a little risky.

Yep every game haha.

There’s no need to do that as Capewell can play centre. A specialist back on the bench is a risk. This is probably the weakest part of Ivan’s coaching, how he uses interchanges.

It doesn't make sense to me, was just theorizing what would make them keep him on the bench (I wouldn't) It weakens the team as far as I can tell.
