Dragon McInnes closes in on NSW Origin debut

Cameron McInnes is one step closer to his State of Origin debut after being one of five players from outside the finals named in NSW’s squad.

McInnes had a dream Sunday, leading St George Illawarra to a 30-22 win over Melbourne and then being named the Dragons’ player of the year for a second straight season just hours after getting the news on Origin.

Incumbents Payne Haas, Tyson Frizell and Jake and Tom Trbojevic were the other players named to be included in Brad Fittler’s 27-man squad for the series on Sunday.

The Blues will continue to name players as their NRL seasons end, giving them notice to remain fit even while outside of the bubble before camp begins on October 19.

It means at this stage Zac Lomax and David Nofoaluma have been denied shots at a debut, while Dragons Paul Vaughan and Tariq Sims have been dropped.

It’s believed the Blues will however tap some players on the shoulder to say they could be brought in to the group if injuries hit during the finals series.

“This season has been extremely challenging for the game,” Fittler said.

“I believe they all will play a role in helping NSW defend the State of Origin Shield and I’m looking forward to working with them when we go into camp.”

Queensland will follow a similar method, and are expected to name their initial players after a series of medical assessments this week.

McInnes’ versatility gives him every chance to make an Origin debut.

While Damien Cook will likely be the first-choice hooker and Api Koroisau an alternative option, McInnes gives utility value if used off the bench.

He has impressed this year while playing mostly at lock for St George Illawarra, leading the club’s tackle count while still offering plenty of play-making opportunities.
Meanwhile the decision not to pick Lomax suggests Fittler will include either Stephen Crichton or Campbell Graham in his squad.

Both remain in the finals at Penrith and South Sydney, and would likely be needed for back-up if Tom Trbojevic is not fit for the series opener.

Jack Wighton would then be expected to hold his position on the other side at right centre.

Vaughan deserves to be dropped well and truly. His worst year by far.

The much maligned St George Illawarra Dragons went out as winners on Sunday beating the understrength Storm 30-22 at Kogarah Oval.

Given the last match of a regular season had no bearing on Melbourne's ladder position or finals future, coach Bellamy sent out a line-up with just 547 games of NRL experience behind them-Storm skipper Cameron Smith has played 427 himself.

Despite missing their regular stars, only the Storms four missed sideline conversions kept the Dragons in the match during the first half.

A Tyson Frizell try just before the break kept them in it, before the Red V debutant Jayden Sullivan took charge in the second half.

Lomax's 63rd-minute penalty try, awarded due to Ricky Leutele illegally shouldering him off the ball in pursuit of a grubber, gave St George Illawarra a lead that Melbourne threatened, but never reeled in to take the consolation win.

St George Illawarra hooker Cameron McInnes a just announced 2020 New South Wales State of Origin squad member has also been named as the Dragons' Player of the Year for the second straight season.

The first-year captain McInnes was rewarded for his outstanding performances in a season where he shared his time on field between hooker and lock.

McInnes also topped the competition's tackle count despite missing the opening two matches of the Dragons' campaign due to a leg injury suffered at February's Perth Nines.

Newcastle Knights-bound back-rower Tyson Frizell also finished his Dragons career on a high after winning the Immortals Trophy for the first time.

Frizell was selected by the coaching staff in consideration of the Immortals criteria: demonstrating outstanding commitment and dedication in all aspects of rugby league.

Frizell leaves the Red V having won every available performance-based award throughout his eight-year term.

Does anyone have any info on our Captain and two time player of the year Cameron McInnes with a contract extension.
November 1 is now only a few days away which means he can start to field offers from rival clubs.
Surprised we haven’t locked him up by now.
News anybody, anything.

Well well Dufty didn’t win that award who would have thought?

Obviously the playing group and club got it wrong lol

Mc Innes the standout by a country mile and proves that consistent hard work can win out over a highlights package that never shows the short comings.

It’s easy to see why McInness wins this medal but Dufty racks up the most Dally M points.

Anyone who’s played any community sport would understand why.

Its also because he got all emotional when Mary left, saying how he owed him everything blah blah blah.
Didn't like it.
Because of Mary his team had been uncompetitive for years.
Anyway, that and the teeth....

That Mary thing was just Stockholm Syndrome..

I think he’s in a bit of a rut.

He was a 207% upgrade on Rein, so he looked awesome when he arrived.

He’s a solid hooker, but he’s not class leading. We looked much better this year when Hunt took the 9...

He’s a great tackler with great line speed.. I’d be getting him to hit the weights and be a ball playing lock next year..

He's 177cm, 91 kg and 26 years of age and I am sure he already has a great work ethic in the gym. But his youthful growth stage is now over. He may thicken a bit but he doesn't have much margin left to add beef. Especially as he has a very aerobic style of play. It eats up muscle.

Compare him with Jake Friend at 175 cm, 92 kg and 31 years.

I am afraid that Cameron is probably near his size limit. Either he learns some new tricks, like a kicking game maybe, or at some point Saints will have to ponder whether he is really what the club needs.

Spoken like the Tiddlywinks champion you are.
Ahh, I see my reputation as three-peat champion in the IDJTWL proceeds me..

But no, we didn’t use the same team voting system in the ‘winks. It just wouldn’t work.
