Haz, so far we’ve heard media reporting on the charges and what’s been mentioned in court.

Sounds really bad.

I suggested early on (seems so long ago) that the less said on here until it’s dealt with the better. Also said the truth will be somewhere in between the prosecution version and defence version, we may never know the truth such is our legal system. Either way we will hear a lot more of each version during the trial.

I’m glad he didn’t beat the charges on legal argument last week because I don’t want to cheer for a guy that got off such serious charges on a technicality without a jury hearing both sides (even if we don’t hear it all).

I would comfortably cheer him playing for us if found not guilty, depending on the rest of the story that comes out during the trial.

I miss his presence in our team, on the field and as young Dufty said;

“He is one of those forwards who can force an error and change the momentum in a game.”

I miss that big time.

Look forward to the trial, hope it’s speedy and fair for all parties and if either side is wrong or have lied I hope it’s made very public.

Reserve my judgement until we can be better informed.
Spot on, well said !

Following lengthy delays and sensitive pre-trial legal argument, a jury has been sworn in to serve in the rape trial of St George Illawarra Dragons player Jack de Belin in Wollongong District Court.

The 29-year-old and co-accused 22-year-old Callan Sinclair are facing four charges of aggravated sexual assault in company and one count of aggravated sexual assault in company inflicting actual bodily harm.

The men arrived separately at Wollongong Court House this morning — de Belin supported by his legal team, with Sinclair also supported by his family.

As the proceeding started Judge Andrew Haesler told the court the complainant's name was suppressed and could not be published.

Both men then entered the witness box and formally pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Crown prosecutor David Scully then briefly outlined the allegations against the men, saying: "the Crown will allege the accused sexually assaulted the complainant penetrating her without her consent in various ways".

He said it is alleged the assaults happened at an apartment in Gibbs Street in North Wollongong in the early hours of December 9, 2018.

Mr Scully then read out a list of close to 50 witnesses who will be called to give evidence including de Belin's long-term partner Alyse Taylor and NRL players Euan Aitken and Adam Clunes.

After a selection process, which rejected a number of potential jurors, a 12-person jury was sworn in to serve in the trial.

Justice Haesler then shared some clarifying information with the jury about their role and urged them to approach the matter "in a logical and rational fashion".

Opening statements in the case will start tomorrow morning.

No fault stand-down
De Belin was stood down under the NRL's no-fault stand-down policy in February 2019 after he was officially charged.

Under the policy, players charged with a criminal offence that carries a maximum jail sentence of 11 years or more can be stood down until the matter has been dealt with by the courts.

In May the same year, de Belin challenged the Australian Rugby League's policy in the Federal Court claiming it was an "unlawful restraint of trade".

He lost the legal action, and later withdrew a subsequent appeal to the decision as it was unlikely to expedite his chances of playing again prior to the end of the 2019 NRL season.

Jack de Belin's contract with the St George Illawarra Dragons has now lapsed but he has agreed in-principal to re-sign with the club for the 2021 season, pending the result of his trial.

In a media statement released in September, the Dragons said the "terms of de Belin's contract will remain confidential while the matter remains before the court".

JDB's trial underway and the prosecutor has given his opening address to the jury.

JDB's and Sinclair's barristers to give their opening address this afternoon.

One way or another, there will be a result after waiting this long and then we will know where JDB stands with his football career.

Depressing reading all round.

Hope justice is served either way,

We all want justice served and I'm wondering why in this particular case allegations made in the courtroom are being splashed all over the media with gay abandon when usually the line on most court cases is " we can't say anything while the matter is before the courts " ?

Because there is no suppression order.

Hate or love the media, it's all about clicks.

Especially given they have said very little about the defence. You can’t say this wouldn’t in some way even subliminally affect the jury.
