2020 has forced the NRL into having a better schedule. Let's make it permanent.

Origin during or after the club season?

Pay TV operators
Pay TV can televise an event if:

  • the event is automatically removed from the anti-siphoning list
  • the minister removes the event from the list
  • a national broadcaster (ABC or SBS) or commercial broadcaster with a combined audience of more than half of the Australian population has purchased the rights
  • 7 days have passed since the end of the event.

So if they paid enough and 9 didn't up their contribution to maintain exclusivity then fox legally can show it

Yes, at present ch9 pays for exclusivity for Origin and Grand Finals. Technically if you look at the list of events every NRL match is on the Anti Siphoning list, I guess they get around it by the games are offered to ch9 but they only purchase 3. Below are the Rugby League events covered under anti siphoning laws.

5 Rugby league football

(1) Each match in the National Rugby League Premiership competition (including the Finals Series).

(2) Each match in the National Rugby League State of Origin Series.

(3) Each international rugby league test match that:

(a) involves the senior Australian representative team; and

(b) is played in Australia or New Zealand.

(4) Each match of the Rugby League World Cup that:

(a) involves the senior Australian representative team; and

(b) is played in Australia, New Zealand or Papua New Guinea.

Interesting, so fox can never bid for exclusive rights to any game, as every match needs to atleast be on offer for a FTA network

on the subject of sport and FTA, im actually surprised we have never had a genuine sports only "fox sports" type channel pop up on FTA - sports would generally provide one of the best returns on money for advitisers so as far as FTA channels go you'd think it would be fairly popular?

We did when digital first started, ch 10 ran the channel 'one' which was a sport focussed channel that had NFL and a heap of motor sport. It didn't really have any major sports so eventually changed to something else.

In regards to the anti siphoning list I am unsure exactly why they have every NRL game on there as it is actually in the sports and the publics best interests to have some games on Paytv. I'm guessing it is written that way to ensure that the free to air broadcaster an get access to as many games as they are willing to pay for.

Though we are way off topic here lol

Ah yeah I do remember that - it was still just a "secondary" channel to 10 though

I was thinking a standalone HD broadcaster, im sure if they managed to get a couple of afl and nrl games, along with the other top tier sports, it would be a success?
The hardest thing would be getting it started and getting those deals through, so I get why it hasn't happened

V'landys spin/waffle we've come to expect.

"people expected a whitewash" - false

"people were fixated on the US elections" - true but you knew what the election date was

("because it was so interesting and that's proven by the amount of money that has been betted on it" - of course a racing merkin brings up betting)

"You have to remember why we played it at the end of the season, and that was to protect the integrity of the NRL competition" - false

"reasons we did was to have crowds. If we did it mid-year we wouldn't have had crowds" - true

"Once we look at all three games, then we will make a judgement. You have to wait and see the audience now the people realise it will be competitive and not a whitewash. We're not going to base judgement on one game. We're waiting on all three." - pretending games 1 & 2 don't count & now doesn't know what whitewash means.

Ratings are down because grand final made the season feel over and players are skipping it.

There are no players "skipping it" at all. Only players "skipping it" are those who were ruled out due to injury. If you look at the injury lists for eligible NSW and Qld players, you'll find a lot of the nominal starters on them.

Which us guaranteed to happen every year if we have it at the end of the season.

If only there were a way to protect the integrity of the NRL competition, play Origin mid-year and create room on the calendar to play more internationals....... oh wait - a mid year three-week origin window! Three birds, one stone.

Also, if we decide that three origins in a row is too much, make it a four week window with 10 or so days between games. Run Oceania Cups alongside the Origin matches for TV content and pause the NRL to preserve the integrity of the comp and build anticipation for its return. Any concerns about giving a 'free-kick' to AFL are nonsense as Origin time basically gives blanket media coverage to RL and even gets the game headlines in non-RL states (especially when they are hosting a match).

Far too sensible! I quite liked the 20 round season this year, a reduction in rounds wouldn't be a bad thing for player fatigue and performance or fan interest. Get a ninth game up and running to cover the drop in TV time. Then stand alone weekends mid season for Origin and Internationals. Maybe players playing less games we could pay them less for club games and reduce the salary cap as well making clubs more viable? Bigger payments for Internationals and Origin (which makes the NRL sht loads of money) could be given to help retain the star players.

Think it’s better mid year although the split rounds are garbage .... three week period with pacific tests on the weekend sounds about right
