It’s against kids but he looks a level above. Still skinny but with that frame he will fill out. What’s impressive is that he seems equally skilled in running, passing and kicking, often with young halves they are strong in one or maybe two of these areas, but rarely all three

You nailed it Vic , he has the skills across all the 3 prime areas you mentioned PLUS he is a goal kicker.
Regard to your point about playing against kids.. he is also just setting up KIDS to score so id imagine his talent would expand when he has more mature experienced footballers around him to explore even better gaps and holes to run to .

The kid looks money. Say what you want about Gus and the Panthers they are reaping the rewards of a great junior system.

With no immediate future for our halves you'd think he will be certainly held on to.

If we're worried about fullback, we could always have a crack at Steven Marsters, but I'm concerned about winger depth. With Thompson gone and Jennings injured, we're fielding young blokes that aren't specialist wingers. I'm pretty sure Saab isn't coming now so Sione Katoa and Mawene Hiroti from the Sharks could be options. Alex Johnston might not be a bad option either because he's a specialist winger that can fill in a fullback if needed.
J Addo-Carr for full-back.

So that’s 24 and McIntyre & Seyfarth to come in, that leaves 4 more to sign?

Squad sizes have been reduced to 28 for 2021. McIntyre to be re-signed any day (apparently he changed management which was the reason for hold up), and Seyfarth apparently will be back in development squad.

JAC has agreed to terms (takes us to 26), door is being left open to H. Grant in case Smith plays on (27) and then one slot free (28).

Are you sure about the 28 man squads? I thought that was changed back to 30 a little while back?

Besides getting the spine right it concerns me looking at the above, like previous years, who is going to be the ball playing forward.

There’s certainly no IMO, no Trbojevic, Paulo or Yeo (using NSW SOO forwards as examples). Bash and barge, yes, just 1st graders, yes. But a ball playing forward who can play long minutes, well I can only see Tamou and that’s going to be 45/50 minutes only, who’s next?

The above takes into account the fact that there’s a few unknowns, the likes of, Blore & Utoikamanu, what is their true ability and their preferred game styles ? Can they make the starting 17?

As it stands my starting pack for Rd 1 would be, Tamou Liddle Musgrove Leilua McIntyre & Twal with reserve forwards of Aloiai, Blore & Mikaele.

What is certainly needed next year is a reserve grade competition.

I’m much less worried about the forwards than the spine atm and we shan’t be curing that anytime soon without transfer tricks or another freak loan.

Steff and Blore are excellent young players with outstanding junior achievements. The power, energy and mobility of their youth will suit the modern game. Big wraps on them from their past clubs.

Lucy was playing great footy at the back end of last season and was getting stronger too. That was a bit unexpected but really exciting. Another player on board, reaching up to optimum.

But they can bring the ball up, pressure and get the field position we want all day, they can hold the middle, but our backs need to fire up.

Plus I want a bit of the Dean Young in all the forwards. Every single one of them should be able to kick into the in goal and hit a sweet spot, they all need to draw and pass like Craig Gower, to take advantage of gaps. Inch perfect passes over 20 metres. That means massive skills training. Forget boot camp, I’d rather have them spend an entire week working on attack.

Run up a sandhill four times or carry a brick for 50 metres is not going to help a player double pump, cut out or run a tight angle. It’s not going to help him get into position on set plays.

Plus these guys are football players, they want to learn, accomplish new skills, perfect their craft.

You need defences on edge 24/7.

I also reckon the spine is our biggest issue. I reckon the best spine we get is something like:-

1. Josh Ado Carr
6. Adam Doueihi
7. Luke Brooks
9. Jacob Liddle

We haven't signed JAC and who knows if it's going to happen. Then he has to be able to play fullback. I like Doueihi but he will have to learn the role. Brooks has been given plenty of chances but hasn't come on. Liddle looks good but there is a big difference to playing bit roles here and there compared to being the starting hooker every game.

There is potential there but geez it'll need some improvement. I don't think it's sure thing that we improve defensively without Benji there as well. Doueihi missed some tackles he should have made when he was playing in the centres and he will have to improve his reads a lot. Grant defensively was fantastic.

That’s my best spine as well. Liddle is not quite inspiring me yet. The lack of genuine depth For 2021 is a problem.

A couple of injuries and we are fielding stock and relying on forwards intermittently peaking, ad hoc and luck.

Tamou should lift forward efficiency 5-10% but I want skills, skills and more skills to enable our forwards to compensate for stock backs and troubled halves.

After the culling over the last few years, I think we should expect improvements of some kind, but other teams improve proportionally, so the cusp of the 8 is again the expectation. But it will be a different year on the recruitment front.

We already have players in mind for the end of the cap crisis, but the game throws up so many variables
like a Latrell etc so it’s a watching brief too.

Latrell can whinge about our side, but the way he handled his departure from the roosters etc turned a lot of people off him for life. Whoring around with 6 clubs, only to later get smashed by his own player and wiped out for critical games. Karma. I don’t respect his opinion after his previous bullshit. He won’t be a Greg Inglis. He’s not fit to tie GI’s bootlaces.

Agree Phantom. I did start with "besides getting the spine right" but yeah, besides the ball skills, it's the whole skill set from the forwards and hopefully the young guys can bring that.

Yep, the skill set needs to lift everywhere I guess!!

Also a bit of resilience and composure. But the modern game lends itself to panic. You rely on your defence these days and you can get beat up pretty badly. Even the storm almost got run over in the gf. Of course, the panthers slashed their own throats in that game as much as the storm won it. Regrettable.
