steve hansen is easily the best buy bulldogs have made in a long long time. one of the great no nonsense and most successful all blacks coaches ever, stepping into a club wallowing in shit.

yes please! come kick us into shape.

Honestly, I feel he was always overrated. Inherited a great team with champion players and a first five that had 2 of the best seasons you'll ever seen. Imo made a lot of questionable decisions that didn't pay off in world cup year last year. But with thay said, should be a welcome addition for the Doggies

Roberts just "Walks away" from a lucrative contract on "compassionate grounds", much like Inglis did a couple of years ago.

For all the talk of Souffs being a "spiritual home" for indigenous players, there seems to be a disproportionate number of them leaving Souffs with mental health/substance abuse issues.
I've read a lot of dumb things on this forum over the years but this one is right up there.

isnt it obvious. South’s are a genuinely caring club concerned about the welfare of their players. It’s wonderful to see in this game.

with a phone chucking kiwi running the place, some allegedly shonky ex players in the courts and ex retired players playing or wanting to play again, it couldn’t be more than that could it?

Souths made the signing of the decade when they picked up Cook. Champion player. Wish he was in my team.

Especially considering

Souths let Nathan Peats go end of 2013 , as they had Luke NRL , API reserves and Cam McInnes U21
Souths let API go end of 2014, as they had Luke and young Cam McInnes
Souths let Luke go end of 2015 and signed Cook for 2016
2016 they had McInnes and Cook compete for hooker and Cook won
Souths let McInnes go and signed Robbie Farrar for 2017/2018 to back up and compete with Cook.
end of 2018 Souths let Robbie go .

as a backup surely. Lumelume looks like a potential gun and perfect replacement for Vunivalu
He definately does, im more thinking the way the club sees it

Lumelume was already at the club, Melbourne are loosing 2 wingers, one of them still in contract and told there needs to be a "suitable" replacement to be released

So Melbourne will be wanted to sign 2 new wingers, Jennings being the first

If Jennings was the JAC replacement i think we would of heard it already

This Year?

Jack Bird to Dragons confirmed: https://www.dragons.com.au/news/2020/11/06/dragons-return-for-bird-confirmed/
St George Illawarra have confirmed the signing of Brisbane Broncos utility Jack Bird on a two-year deal, tying him to the Dragons until at least the end of the 2022 NRL Telstra Premiership season.

The local Berkeley Eagles junior will re-join the Red V after progressing through the club's lower grades prior to departing for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in 2015, where he made his NRL debut.

The premiership-winning, New South Wales State of Origin representative has spent the past three seasons with the Broncos, although consecutive season-ending knee injuries restricted the 25-year-old to 17 games at Brisbane.

"It's great to see Jack return to the Dragons with him being a local junior as well as his capabilities as a player," General manager of football Ben Haran said.

"We wanted to ensure that Jack returning to the Dragons was right for us as a club, which is why we exercised due diligence around his well-documented injury troubles.

"Jack's a real competitor with a winning attitude and is a player who attacks the game each and every time he plays. We're looking forward to seeing him bring that to the Dragons upon his return."

Bird's arrival follows the signing of Poasa Faamausili and the retention of Mat and Max Feagai, Josh Kerr, Jackson Ford, Mikaele Ravalawa, Adam Clune, Junior Amone and Tyrell Sloan ahead of the Dragons' 2021 campaign.

The sad truth behind James Roberts' 'release' from South Sydney
By Michael Chammas

November 8, 2020 — 7.45pm

There have been more than a few raised eyebrows surrounding the release of James Roberts from South Sydney last week, with doubts raised as to why anyone would willingly walk away from a $500,000 deal without another job lined up.

The rumour mill has been in overdrive, with questions raised about whether South Sydney have pulled a swift salary cap rort to get Roberts off the books in 2021. Sadly, the truth behind the Roberts story is more troubling and has left many fearing it could be the last we see of Jimmy the Jet in the NRL.

When Souths coach Wayne Bennett lured Roberts back to the Rabbitohs from the Broncos midway through last season, there were some at the club opposed to the idea given they had previously sacked him for a range of off-field misdemeanours.

Souths, however, put their faith in Bennett to keep the centre in check, although club powerbrokers wanted some protection and wouldn't agree to the deal unless Roberts signed off on a one-strike-and-out clause that allowed them to terminate his contract if he stepped out of line.

South Sydney had multiple opportunities to trigger the clause earlier in the year when they began to question Roberts' commitment to the team. But given his history and the challenges he had faced throughout his life, the Rabbitohs were reluctant to kick him to the curb.

It's why they paid close to $30,000 in psychological support for him and his family, including a month's stay at a northern beaches rehabilitation clinic to help him deal with the struggles related to the COVID-19 lockdown in Sydney.

Despite his release, Souths have also pledged to continue their financial assistance of the 27-year-old, which it is projected will cost another $30,000 based on the welfare plan set out for the next 12 months.

When South Sydney sat down with Roberts to discuss the contract breaches three months ago, which were nothing more than a few incidents that raised questions over his commitment to the club, the Rabbitohs decided against immediately terminating his deal and offered to pay him for the remainder of the rugby league financial year.

It cost the club more than $100,000 they were not obligated to pay under the terms of the contract, but the club had Roberts' welfare at the forefront of their decision making.

South Sydney also wanted to give Roberts time to find another club, agreeing to provide a reference if he managed to secure interest elsewhere. The Newcastle Knights are considering offering Roberts a lifeline but there has been very little appetite shown at other clubs.

The NRL has had several discussions with South Sydney in relation to Roberts' release and is comfortable with the mutual understanding that has been struck between the two parties.

No amount of money or support can help some people.

Needs support due to Covid? FMD nearly every person on earth has been affected by it.
Better throw another 30k at him. Some people just won't ever help themselves so how can others help them?

This is what happens when you dont get the invite to Latrell's joint for a weekend of bikes & guns, I mean cultural learning.
