After being written off by all and sundry going into game one, the Maroons head to Sydney with the chance to wrap up the Ampol State of Origin series.

The Blues led 10-0 at half-time of the opening clash but couldn't contain the Queenslanders in the second half and lost 18-14.

However, as Daly Cherry-Evans was quick to point out, the Maroons won game one last year and lost the series. The job is far from done.

Maroons coach Wayne Bennett said he would see how his troops pulled up before making any changes for a seven-day turnaround, while NSW mentor Brad Fittler's hand will be forced by an injury.

Team news
Blues: Captain Boyd Cordner won't play due to the effects of a head knock suffered in Adelaide and Luke Keary has been demoted to the reserves among a raft of changes for game two.

Cody Walker (who was on the bench for game one) will start at five-eighth, with Angus Crichton to start in Cordner's spot in the back row. Payne Haas and Junior Paulo swap spots from game one, with Haas to start and Paulo to come off the bench.

With Cameron Murray (hamstring) having been ruled out on Thursday, there is a new-look bench. As well as Paulo, Dale Finucane returns to Origin while Isaah Yeo and Nathan Brown have been named to make their debuts.

Keary, who could still feature on game day, is joined by Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Stephen Crichton and Cameron McInnes on the reserves list.

Maroons: Valentine Holmes will make his Origin comeback and Dunamis Lui is a surprise inclusion at prop after Christian Welch was ruled out due to a heavy knock late in game one.

In the other change to the Queensland starting side, Coen Hess is out, with Jaydn Su'A to start after impressing in game one.

Apart from Lui, Su'A and Holmes, the only other change from the game-time 17 from Adelaide is uncapped Titans prop Moeaki Fotuaika getting a spot on the interchange bench.

Holmes hasn't represented the state since 2018, after which he had an NFL sojourn. The Maroons needed a new fullback after AJ Brimson suffered a series-ending lisfranc ligament injury in his foot towards the end of game one.

Brenko Lee, Corey Allan, Josh Kerr and Edrick Lee are the Queensland reserves.

Key match-up
Dane Gagai v Jack Wighton. Gagai outpointed Wighton in the series opener, including beating him to make a line break and set up a try, so the NSW star will be desperate to make amends.

Stat Attack
NSW got the better of Queensland in a plethora of areas in game one. They ran for more metres (1914 v 1852), made more line breaks (4 v 3), broke more tackles (31 v 26), popped more offloads (13 v 11), forced more dropouts (2 v 1), missed less tackles (26 v 31), made less errors (13 v 14) and conceded less penalties (2 v 3).

The Maroons had a higher completion rate (78 v 75 percent) and didn't have to make as many tackles (355 v 395).

They won't drop the darling. He did nothing last night.
How in the hell did they drop Keary before Cleary.Surely they got the names mixed up.Keary was very dangerous on a number of occasions.Cant remember Cleary running the ball.Even his kicking was poor because he was either not running or easily pressured. He also doesnt seem to communicate with other players.Goes well for his club where he is familiar with team members.

Careful...Channel 9 favourite there but in all honesty I would not of dropped either for Walker
Maybe Keary has got a sneaky battered body at the moment their not telling us.... for me that could be the only reason he is singled out to be dropped
Maybe it was Joey John’s fault he did call that in the after match interview and he does work with Freddie in the team

I only got to see a full replay of SOO 1 today and was incredibly impressed with Queensland’s game plan. For the second 20 minutes of the first half and first 20 minutes of the second half, when Hunt was on the field playing in the Queensland halves in general play, Queensland were playing with just four forwards with Friend playing dummy half. This strategy seemed to work against the NSW forwards in both attack and defence.

The extra back seemed to nullify the NSW attack during this period, and provided Queensland with an extra man when they sent the ball out wide. I would be interested to hear if other members noticed other game strategies that worked or did not work on the night for either side.

Dragons septet to play women's Origin

Interstate rivalry resumes in the Harvey Norman State of Origin arena with Queensland desperate to turn the tide of recent losses and give NSW a taste of their own medicine on home turf this year.

After four years of running out to a sea of blue, the Maroons' patience has finally been rewarded with the Sunshine Coast set to play host to the one-off standalone event following back-to-back clashes at North Sydney Oval.

NSW will enter enemy territory as the two-time defending champions under the official State of Origin banner, while they also held onto interstate challenge bragging rights for two years before that with victories in 2016 and 2017.

Prior to that, however, it was all one-way traffic with the Maroons holding a remarkable 17-year undefeated streak that began in 1999.

Despite the Blues' most recent success, Queensland are set to go into the clash as favourites with home ground advantage and the form of Broncos premiership-winners Ali Brigginshaw, Tamika Upton and Tarryn Aiken given them an edge.

However, it would be brave to write off the Blues given their stranglehold on the title in recent seasons and with the calibre of players in their line-up that includes the likes of Kezie Apps, Jessica Sergis, Hannah Southwell, Corban McGregor and Isabelle Kelly, who are proven winners on the big stage.

NSW coach Andrew Patmore made a statement before hopping on the plane to prepare for the away trip last week, leaving out several members of last year's winning side, including halves Kirra Dibb and Maddie Studdon.

Equally, Queensland coach Jason Hetherington made some difficult decisions of his own with nine fresh faces joining experienced campaigners like Brittany Breayley, Steph Hancock and Rona Peters.

The rundown
Team news
Maroons: Ali Brigginshaw will play lock just as she did in Brisbane's final two regular season NRLW matches and the grand final win, allowing Broncos gun Tarryn Aiken and Zahara Temara to start in the halves for Queensland.

The Maroons will also field a new-look backline with Broncos quartet Tamika Upton, Julia Robinson, Lauren Brown and Shenae Ciesiolka joining incumbent Karina Brown out wide.

North Queensland product Shaniah Power has been included on the bench for a potential Origin debut with Chante Temara, Jessika Elliston and Brianna Clark named in the reserves.

Blues: As predicted, Corban McGregor and Melanie Howard will start in the halves with Botille Vette-Welsh promoted to fullback for the defending champions. NSW coach Andrew Patmore has opted for a similar backline make-up to last year with Jessica Sergis on the wing and Tiana Penitani in the centres.

Isabelle Kelly (ankle) and Kezie Apps (knee) remain on track to play with Brydie Parker and Kennedy Cherrington among those on standby in the reserves.

Jillaroos young gun Keeley Davis will start at hooker with Quincy Dodd included on the interchange.

Key match-up
Chelsea Lenarduzzi v Millie Boyle. Premiership-winning teammates at the Broncos, Lenarduzzi and Boyle will put their club allegiances aside on Friday in a classic mate v mate battle that could dictate the middle.

Lenarduzzi was the best Maroons forward in last year's game with a handy 113 metres and three tackle busts off the bench. She was matched by Boyle, who produced 142 metres in just 31 minutes with three tackle busts of her own.

The pair are likely to be promoted to their respective starting sides this year and will not take a backward step.

Savannah surprises Sergis

Savannah surprises Sergis

Stat Attack
NSW has scored five tries to one in the second halves of games over the past two years, highlighting their ability to come from behind against Queensland despite trailing early on both occasions.

The Maroons dominated possession (55%) last year but their completion rate deteriorated late to allow NSW back into the contest and seal victory with two tries in the final 15 minutes.

This is the area NSW will know they can get to Queensland, and equally the Maroons will look to limit their opportunities while capitalising in attack themselves.

And another thing...
The annual clash has been played across 60 minutes over the past two years but will increase to 35-minute halves after receiving approval in September.

However, the six-again rule will not apply, with penalties awarded for infringements instead.

Ben Hunts defence is atrocious. He grabs at attackers and I am yet to see him drive a shoulder into a player. He has been stepped three times in the first half for nsw tries. He can play cc if that is the trash he is going to serve up.

Thank god I’m not alone.

He is back in the halves where he thinks he belongs and has no communication with his rookie centre when defending which is fatal.

His arm grabbing is very reminiscent of his club form

A half who doesn’t communicate let alone give firm directions is useless.

To be fair it’s near impossible to stop anyone that close to the line when you’re wrong footed.
Especially players like Tedesco & Addo Carr

Yep. Another diabolical performance tonight from the highest paid player in the NRL. Although some on this forum would have you believe he was the best player on the park in Origin I.

Ben Hunt is now 0/9 this year when playing in the halves. Bloke deserves it after blatantly trying to stifle Clune, his own teammate, earlier in the season.

Agreed, he got one offload last week that eventually led to a try, playing off the bench when Qld were rolling. He was not close to their best last week DCE was far better as he was tonight. Hunt has never or will never play better than Cleary played tonight. I hope Hook can turn him around but he’s not a million dollar half it’s that simple.

Qld were always battling once Munster was gone. Hunt was very ordinary tonight but he wasn’t the only one
