Dragons finally release Saab as dominos fall in transfer market

The development comes just a day after another rising star, Joseph Suaalii, was released from the final year of his South Sydney contract to join the Roosters.

Saab is seeking a club closer to home to spend more time with his family after struggling with the commute to Wollongong. The Red V had all but agreed to a release under previous coach Paul McGregor, but replacement Anthony Griffin was less keen to lose one of the NRL's most exciting outside backs.

Saab was a no-show when the Dragons returned to training last week, requiring time off to deal with personal issues. After the Dragons ruled out several proposed player swaps, the parties finally settled on a compensation fee that will allow Saab to link with Des Hasler at the Sea Eagles.

It has been a difficult period for Saab, a close friend of Manly forward Keith Titmuss, who died after a Sea Eagles training on Monday.

"Rest in peace Keith, I can't believe you're really gone my brother," Saab posted on social media.

"Words can't describe the love I have for you. To carry on without you is difficult especially in a career we both chose to pursue.

"You were so deserving of your dreams and I promise to live them out for you. Love you KT."

The Dragons are awaiting the verdict in the rape trial of Jack de Belin, which will determine whether the star forward is free to resume his playing career. After hearing almost three weeks of evidence at the NSW District Court in Wollongong, Judge Andrew Haesler has encouraged the jury to take as much time as required to arrive at a unanimous verdict.

The decision will have huge implications for the Dragons' salary cap and roster management after de Belin indicated he would recommit to the Red V if a favourable outcome was delivered.

While Saab will join Manly, the Sea Eagles could lose Curtis Sironen as part of a player swap with Wests Tigers forward Luke Garner. Another Tiger, Josh Aloai, is also agitating for a release to join Manly. That is likely to be forthcoming, with the Tigers closing in on the signature of Brisbane forward Joe Ofahengaue.

The Warriors remain in the mix for the services of Brisbane forward Matt Lodge, who might not be the only Bronco on the move. The Cowboys could pounce should halfback Tom Deardon become available, a move that could result in Jake Clifford immediately moving to Newcastle.

That could prompt a chain reaction that may prompt off-contract Cowboy John Asiata ending up at Red Hill.

And Canterbury's raid on Penrith may not end with Matt Burton. The Bulldogs are also interested in underrated Panthers forward Spencer Leniu.

Compensation in itself doesn’t really help does it ? Unless we could add that compensation onto our cap spend. Otherwise it’s just balance sheet stuff.
Oh well .... glad to see the back of him personally. We move on.

A player would never leave a club if the culture was strong...could you imagine a player asking to leave the Roosters because training was too far... Hook has to build the team culture and then a club that players want to come to.

Until then we will keep paying overs for players and signing 2nd hand Dreggs from other teams..

Agree to a fair extent Mickylane. We did get Jamie Soward off a mid season release reportedly from Nick Politis after Jamie requested the change for a dragons opportunity. Boy that one worked in our favour.

But lately yes it ‘seems’ as though other clubs are signing players of good standard up on top of other good signings; we are not. Still let’s wait and see.

St George Illawarra have confirmed Jason Saab has been released from his Dragons playing contract.

The Dragons received an undisclosed fee for Saab's release, who will join another NRL club with immediate effect.

Four spots now remain in the Dragons' Top 30 for the 2021 NRL Telstra Premiership season.

"A big focus for the Dragons on the recruitment and retention front is that our players, whether they're already here or are signed by the club, are 100 per cent committed to representing this proud organisation," General manager of football Ben Haran said.

"We don't want to retain or sign players for the sake of it. We want to ensure that each player who walks through our gates every day is the right fit for the Dragons, especially during a period where so much change is afoot."

Saab played seven first grade games for the Dragons. We thank him for his contribution to the Red V.

Really happy to hear the club talk like this. Another sign the McGregor era is finally over.

Big worry in the pack.

We need to sign some big union forwards.

Sorry possm not having a go at all but every time I see a statement like that I immediately think of Garrick Morgan at the Crushers - an absolute beast of a human that hit like a powder puff..
