So if Hunt plays well next year
1. why wouldn’t we keep him?
2. why will he be punished?

Yes if what you’re trying to say is he’s on too much money people forget there’s a few very close to or over $1m dollar players out there that we could say are in the same boat
Milford, Holmes, Morgan, Klem, Dugan, Johnson?,Fifita, Norman, Moses, Woods, Brooks, Taylor, Hess.
Yep little scrutiny compared to Hunt goes on those above
Why? Is that because they see someone who appears a little bit fragile mentally after dropping an important bomb in a GF.

You can add Moylen to that group ( he even forgot how to complete simple tackles ! ) At least Hunt is nowhere near this standard ( though Corey is ! )

There are too many NRL players on 800k plus that just dont deserve anywhere near that money and they really compromise their clubs salary cap flexibility. Why they just single out Hunt amazes me.At least he doesn't f**k up his clubs culture like Fifita, Dugan & Milford .

Isn't 2 million of your cap tied up in Hunt and Norman?

The focus is on Hunt because he plays for us.

Go have a glance at the forums of teams that your listed players belong to. Those supporters would happily move them along too, and don’t give a shit about hunt.

I am not talking about our scrutiny..I am talking about general media is out of balance to Hunt than others right from the time he signed for the perceived $1.2m a year
Naturally individual forums focus on their underperformers..that is a no-brainer
I certainly wont be glancing at other teams forums

I’ve always been amazed at the scrutiny Hunt is always under from the media compared to others. It’s not his fault the club was desperate & offered overs which he gleefully accepted.
Every time his name is mentioned in the media it’s always accompanied with the million $ player. No others have their contract value mentioned.

100% correct re the media scrutiny....unwarranted compared to other under-performing players.
At the time it was a good deal...the market shifts....like anything...We needed a recognized 7 and that is what we went for....Pity certain peoples regimented games plan never suited the player......

Have a good evening.

At the time of the signing I thought it was brilliant that we were finally going to have a world class halfback that we had desperately missed for many years. I also defended paying overs as that is what was necessary to attract such a quality player to SGI at the time.
I think the big disappointment and the reason why Hunt is scrutinised so much is that not only has he been very inconsistent at 7 he actually lost that spot to a rookie in Clune that was on minimum wage.
If Hunt had have stood up and played like a world-class halfback nobody would even discuss his salary anymore.
And I don't think that you can blame all of Hunts faults on the lack of game planning from the coach.

This.

I expect a world class half to take games by the scruff of the neck in key moments. They need to demand the ball and deliver. Sometimes it won’t come off. Sometimes it will. That’s footy.

I challenge anyone to give me 5 examples where Hunt has controlled the side in the last 10 minutes and got us the win. I don’t think that’s an unreasonable expectation after 3 seasons.

Yeah agree, and on the occasions he's played origin at 7 he has pretty much bombed even with a great side around and a good coach. He also has the worst field goal percentage in the NRL and I could count the games on one hand where he has taken the bull by the horn and guided us to a win with game management. He's won a few with show and goes etc but that's not a high percentage play you can rely upon from your million dollar half. Lets hope Hook/Soward can work a miracle and get him to have his finest few years and finish his career strong.

'Sponge' Sullivan shows future is bright for Dragons

Jayden Sullivan is prepared to bide his time in St George Illawarra's halves queue and continue soaking up knowledge from his senior teammates.

The 19-year-old, who made his NRL debut in round 20 last year, provided another glimpse of the future with a standout showing in Friday night's 36-28 trial loss to Cronulla at PointsBet Stadium.

The match was mostly made up of emerging players, with only those who played 12 or fewer first-grade games in 2020 able to feature, but Sullivan scored a try, set up another, kicked and tackled strongly, although he was also put on report for a dangerous tackle.

It gave coach Anthony Griffin – who praised the efforts of Sullivan and five-eighth Junior Amone and said "they've put themselves in the picture" – something to ponder ahead of round one.

Ben Hunt is almost certain to start at halfback, but pivot Corey Norman is yet to learn the outcome of an NRL Integrity Unit investigation into an off-field incident. Adam Clune, who wore the No.7 jersey capably in 15 matches last season, is also in the mix.

"At the moment, I'm just enjoying being a sponge. I love to learn," Sullivan said on Friday evening.

"To learn off Clune, Hunty and Norman – they're the GOATs [greatest of all time] to me, I look up to them. I love seeing everyone in my team do well, and if they can win for the team then I'm happy.

"Clune lives two doors up from me, so we carpool to training every day and have some good banter," he added. "And obviously, I'm pretty close with Normy and Hunty.

"I still feel like I've got a lot to learn. I've only played one [NRL] game, you can't really judge it off that one game.

"I'm sure if I was playing first-grade week in, week out, teams would be doing video on me and it would make it much harder as a player."

Asked about the possibility of filling a bench utility role, Sullivan said he'd "play front row if [Griffin] would let me."

While his skill caught the eye against the Sharks, he was also solid and enthusiastic without the ball.

"Hook [Griffin] is a really good coach, and at the start of pre-season he said 'obviously your attack's going to come, but if you work hard on your defence, you can be a much better player'," he said.

"I want to pride myself on my defence. I'm not the biggest body, but I always get my body in front and hopefully make my tackles."

St George Illawarra scored the opening two tries on Friday, with Sullivan delivering a lovely inside ball for the first to Tyrell Sloane.

It was no coincidence that Sullivan combined so well with the fullback and Amone – they've been friends since childhood.

"Junior and Tyrell, I've played all my junior footy with them, went to [Illawarra Sports High] school with them," he said. "I think under-6s was my first game with them. To play a first-grade trial with them and see them do good, it really puts a smile on my face."

But the happy occasion was tempered with the club's devastation that inspirational leader Cameron McInnes suffered a season-ending ACL injury during training on the morning of the trial.

With McInnes contracted to Cronulla for 2022, his time in the Red V has come to an abrupt end.

"Cam's definitely one of the reasons why I love the club so much. My first year in grade, Cam used to pick me up because I was only 17 and I didn't have a licence," Sullivan said.

"He used to drive me to training every day even though he didn't have to be there until 9 o'clock and I started at 6 in the morning.

"To see him go down, it really hurts me as a person because I know how hard he works as a captain, as a good club man. I can't speak any higher of him, I love the bloke to death."

St George Illawarra have secured its future in the halves with the club agreeing to terms with young halfback Jayden Sullivan for three more years.

The 20-year-old, already under contract for 2022, was free to talk to other clubs from November 1 but after fielding plenty of interest the South Coast junior will recommit to remain in Wollongong until the end of 2025.

It’s a move which shows the Dragons are planning for life after Ben Hunt with the skipper having two years remaining on his contract.

Edit
**I have had this confirmed to me.

What fantastic news George. Thanks for posting. We can all sit back now and relax and look forward to 2022 and beyond. The best news as far as I am concerned. Good on the club, the negotiators and most of all young Bud for being loyal and having the Red V in his heart.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

All eyes will be on Sullivan and Amone next year and a weight of expectation. I pray they can deliver and get us excited about this club again.
