Manly were clever in attaching their centre of excellence to a grandstand. If only they built it on the eastern side. But anyway it's a start. They still need to fund another three grandstands.

Every single one of the AFL clubs are based in Melbourne's inner suburbs, and they have no trouble finding people to support them. It's not always about where you are from, it's about there actually being enough people interested to sustain all the teams in the city.

Melbourne can't sustain two soccer clubs for the same reason that Sydney can't sustain nine NRL clubs, the consumer base isn't big enough to support the amount of supply, i.e. the market is oversupplied.
Melbourne AFL clubs are all 130 - 160 years old, from a time when Melbourne was much smaller so that is hardly relevant.
But you are correct. Melbourne actually has three A League clubs yet soccer was stronger here when we had just Victory (total crowds were higher when we just had one club).
AFL, NRL and BBL generate enough from media rights to sustain clubs even with low crowds. Soccer does not have that luxury. Until recently AFL considered Soccer its main threat, but like Basketball it will always be a second tier sport as far as crowds, ratings and general interest are concerned.
Participation by kids has little bearing on that.

I know exactly what sport this is, and 15k is way to small.

Anytime there was a big game they'd be turning away thousands of supporters and with a stadium so small the NRL probably wouldn't allow them host finals at all, at which point why even bother using it as a home ground at all. May as well just use AAMI as it would actual fulfil the club's needs.

BTW I never claimed it was the Super Bowl, nor will it ever be, but it could be as big as the AFL if we made some changes.
In the unlikely event that there is ever a second Melbourne club, a 15k stadium in the outer suburbs would actually be perfect. You could play one or two big games plus final at AAMI.
Any new team in an already established market definitely needs a point of difference. AFL did it well with Fremantle and Port Adelaide and GWS will take a long time but in 20 years they will be thriving.
Brisbane 2 should have happened 20 years ago. But you can’t just call it Brisbane x, play out of the same stadium and expect to build a new fan base. This is what Melbourne Heart/City tried. Bris 2 should be the main topic of discussion at NRL board level.

Why would you build an end stand when it needs a main stand?
The northern stand being attached to the centre of excellence has been a long time coming. They put in a business case for some of the ANZ funding, that won't be approved until next year at the earliest.

yeah , you're right
comparing soccer in melbourne or even sydney .. with nrl in sydney & saying they all can't be sustained , is a flawed argument atm , mainly because of the revenue nrl draws from broadcasters is way above soccers.

but Long term the situation will be problematic in a crowded market , So Dane is also correct.

the NRL & AFL are our main sporting codes & cricket .. they have problems too but .. nothing compared to the minor sports .. soccer & union are in dire straights & idk how they will be able to work their way out of them.

Should be on the same scale as Newcastle Eastern Grandstand...

They need something like we built at HBF. Cost was around $60mill. Seats around 14k and is an awesome place to watch the game, feels right on top of the pitch Though the climb to the back is a killer! They spent around $110mill on HBF park and we got the main east stand, an uncovered end stand, two big screens, new pitch and drainage, three new changing rooms and ref facilities, upgraded lighting, new toilets and food outlets. That is what Brooky needs in reality spending on it.

Stand on right of pic

i just can't get excited about the new SFS

why are we spending 800 million replacing a pretty good 42K seat stadium .... with a pretty good 42K seat stadium again ??

ive heard all the excuses & lame reasons
it could have been bought up to code with about 100 million of work

we could have built 2 more bankwests elsewhere in Sydney where they're needed with the change
or
one decent proper 70K seat rectangle stadium

this is an utter clusterf**k as many here have already stated
