Where will the NRL be in 2030?

There wasn't an issue last season when they took Origin to Perth.
Or a couple seasons ago when Souths took games to Perth.
They also don't seem to concerned about a 24 hour flight to play a friendly in England.
Peter V'landys brought it up at a press conference when questioned about expansion into Perth.

Thankfully he wont be around forever. i suspect when we find out what the TV deal in comparison to AFL's the honeymoon will be over and the pressure will be on him.

Precisely.

If the AFL's deal is really good & the NRL's is just ok then the hard questions need to be asked - not just of the people in charge, but the whole top-tier strategy the game has.

Ideal magic wand fantasy makeup of the NRL in 2030 would be :-

1. Brisbane broncos.
2. Brisbane2 playing out of suncorp.
3. Gold Coast.
4. North Queensland cowboys.
5. Sunshine Coast.
6. Perth
7. Melbourne storm.
8. Auckland warriors.
9. Christchurch.
10. Canberra raiders.
11. St. George Illawarra dragons based fulltime in Wollongong.
12. Central coast
13. Newcastle knights.
14. Western bulldogs merger of Canterbury and western suburbs.
15. Parramatta panthers merger of Penrith and parramatta.
16. South Sydney rabbitohs.
17. East Sydney tigers merger of East’s and Balmain.
18. North Sydney sea Eagles merger of north’s and manly.

*THIS* - with one change.. Adelaide instead of Sunshine Coast.

That way we have all the mainland Australian states covered, and scope to add two other locations as teams 19 and 20 to complete the expansion.

Plenty of options for 19 and 20 too - 3rd NZ club, 2nd Melbourne club, Sunshine Coast, 3rd Brisbane club, 2nd Perth club (guaranteed late game every weekend), Tasmania...

I agree on the penrith non merger, and parramatta could easily sustain itself, as parramatta is seen as the 2nd city in sydney (western sydney) penrith is 30 mins west of there.
Cronulla is a must, their catchment is huge, and if the dragons are in wollongong, then its even bigger.
Auckland is very important, not only are they competetive, its a team that ALF won't be able to compete with, they can be a powerhouse, they were almost there a decade ago, with leaders like Steve Price and Ruben Wiki.

My ideal comp is 20 teams
1. North Queensland Cowboys
2. Brisbane Broncos.
3. East Coast Dolphins
4. Brisbane City Tigers
5. Gold Coast Titans
6. Adelaide Rams/Saints/Angels
7. Perth Reds/Pirates/Force
8. Melbourne Storm.
9. Auckland Warriors.
10. South Pacific Cyclones (Auckland 2)
11. Western Suburbs Bulldogs (merged Canterbury & Wests based in Liverpool)
12. Cronulla Sutherland Sharks
13. Newcastle Knights
14. Penrith Panthers
15. Parramatta Eels
16. South Sydney Rabbitohs.
17. North Sydney Roosters (merged Roosters and Norths)
18. North Coast Eagles (Gosford)
19. Canberra Raiders.
20. St. George Illawarra Dragons (Wollongong based)

A Decade later....
21. P.N.G Hunters
22. Christchurch Kings (South Island NZ)

The only real merger being bulldogs and wests and a relocation of manly to gosford

Can you imagine how powerful the Panthers would be if they merged with Wests Magpies to become the Western Sydney Panthers? 8 games in Penrith, 4 at Campbelltown. It'll never happen, but it would be a massive club that would be a juggernaut on and off field, making life miserable for GWS Giants and the soccer team in Macarthur.

St George Dragons, dropping the name Illawarra and relocating to Perth with 2 games in Adelaide. Team would recruit 80% - 90% of its squad from England and add Western Australians to fill the other spots. Suddenly the RL fans of England have a team that represents them and Perth has a team of its own. English expatriates would have a team that they can follow. There wouldn't be anything of its kind in Australia, so it might appeal to English expatriates who aren't rusted on RL fans. 8pm WAST is 1pm London Daylight Savings, is it not? Games in Perth at this time on a Saturday night will be broadcast at a viewable hour for Western Australians and Englishmen, and provide another timeslot for Fox Sports where it will be 10pm on the east coast.

Sharks become the Southern Sydney Sharks and represent the outer area of southern Sydney, Illawarra and South Coast.

Panthers and Sharks would become the Roosters of the west and south. Dragons would fly the flag for patriotic Englishmen, making the NRL more relevant to English broadcasters and uniting all Englishmen in Australia, while building the game in Perth.

Not sure the stgeorge faithful would be on board with a relocation to perth let alone the WIN side of their merger leaving them with no team, lets be honest, if sharks took over both illawarra and rockdale area, they won't be taking any games to wollongong.

Penrith don't need a merger, especially one with a team run by the ol magpie faithful nuffies, better to have a macarthur type team, or liverpool based team to represent SW sydney, being either Bulldogs alone or merged with Wests.
Penrith have their own large catchment and growth areas spreading further out west, the catchments spreading throughout to the central west tablelands, Bathurst, Lithgow etc, hence when folks suggest a merger with Penrith its laughable.
The more suited teams for mergers are either Canterbury and Roosters, as they are already in areas where teams already reside.
Roosters aren't the benchmark for a successful club, its clubs like Parramatta and Newcastle who are, who the latter haven't won a title in 35 years, but still can produce memberships and consistent fan following, Roosters would be in trouble if they sat at the bottom of the table, like the dogs have been the past 3-4 years, not a good example, strong clubs aren't based on the on field performances, but on how good they can survive when they aren't.

P.s my preference (my heart) would be to kick the rorters out of the comp or relocate them to Adelaide as they provide absolutely sweet f'all to the NRL other than their own existence. But looking at it objectively (with my brain) says taking over and properly involving north shore and northern sydney into a rooster catchment might make them stronger, and thus help the league become stronger too.

Bulldogs and Magpies could capture the south west as a merged entity. Blue and white in Wests Magpies design?

I suggested Magpies and Panthers because they both use black as their primary colour and it would give Penrith a massive catchment. They would become Brisbane Broncos of Sydney and be the envy of every other club in NSW. It would also box the GWS Giants into a tiny pocket.

Manly has a following on NZ. Maybe they could relocate to Wellington when Penn calls stumps.

Would WIN buy into a Sharks team representing Illawarra?

Splitting games between Adelaide and Perth will be a surefire way to ensure that the team fails. Why would either expansion city get behind a team that plays there part time?

I’ve no problem with adding Adelaide but for me they are way down the pecking order behind Brisbane2, Perth, NZ2 and Sunshine Coast.
