An NRL star who once made a seven-figure salary before going onto Centrelink is making a bid for freedom as he faces up to 25 years in jail if found guilty over drug charges.

Brett Dallas, 46, was due to make a bail application at Queensland's Mackay Magistrates Court on Friday.

He has been in custody on remand since June as he faces 13 offences including aggravated possession of ice, supplying ice, producing marijuana, possessing ketamine and weapons category D/H/R.

Issues with videolink meant he was unable to make his bail application and will have to try again next Friday,
Courier Mail reported.

Dallas was known for his speed while playing as a winger for the Canterbury Bulldogs and North Sydney Bears in the 1990s.

He shot to stardom at 18 when he became Queensland's youngest State of Origin player after breaking into the Canterbury Bulldogs team.

He moved to the North Sydney Bears and spent the latter half of his club career with English club Wigan.

He had represented Australia in the World Cup in 1995.

He also made headlines when he was awarded the Buttercup Sprint Challenge at Botany in early 1993.

At the peak of his career he commanded a million-dollar contract.

In January 2020, Dallas fronted Mackay Magistrates Court for his 10th stealing offence in 12 months.

Dallas pleaded guilty to three charges which included the theft of a $690 coffee table from a furniture franchise in November 2019.

A million dollar contract? For a winger? In the 1990's? That would have been the Super League war, during which time he went from a SL club to an ARL club, but still it seems far fetched.

A few drug possession, gun and larceny offences don't get you 25 years either. The writer of this article seems to like to exaggerate things.

million dollar contract. Not hard to imagine him getting $350k a season over 3years in his prime
It does say a seven figure salary. You assume that to be per year otherwise the lowliest shithouse cleaner would be on a million dollar contract if you count it over 25 years.

Unfortunately accurate journalism doesn't sell papers/get clicks.

Trafficking does and its mandatory.

Trafficking in dangerous drugs
A person who unlawfully traffics in dangerous drugs commits an offence punishable by up to 25 years imprisonment for sch 1 drugs and up to 20 years imprisonment for sch 2 drugs (s 5 Drugs Misuse Act).

Even a single sale of a quantity of a drug, together with some proof that a business was being carried on, constitutes trafficking. Evidence of dealings in another state may be admissible to show continuation of the same business in Queensland.

There is a mandatory minimum non-parole period of 80% for a prisoner serving a term of imprisonment for the offence of drug trafficking (s 182A Corrective Services Act 2006 (Qld)). This means that every person convicted of drug trafficking after that date and sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment has to serve 80% of the prison term before they are eligible for release on parole. Queensland courts have no discretion to reduce this 80% mandatory minimum prison sentence. In practice, this will result in people convicted of drug trafficking serving much longer times in prison. This also applies to people convicted of counselling, procuring, attempting or conspiring to commit an offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

46 years old. I would’ve thought he was much older than that. anyhow, after his social media antics, I’m not surprised to read that headline

80% is mandatory.

So lowest a judge can give is 20 years.
Read your own post.

The prison term is up to 25 years. So it could be less, down to zero, depending presumably on the extent of the offending. There does not appear to be a minimum. What is mandatory is the non-parole period, 80% of the sentence, which could be 25 years, 20 years, 2 years or even less. I'm only taking this information from what you posted and clearly didn't read.
