Latrell Mitchell set to sign two-year, $1.75m Rabbitohs deal

3-4 minutes

South Sydney superstar Latrell Mitchell is set to sign a two-year, $1.75 million extension to remain at the club until the end of 2023.

Mitchell, who joined the Rabbitohs from arch rivals Sydney Roosters last year, has agreed to a deal worth around $875,000 a season.

It comes as the Panthers look set to retain five-eighth Jarome Luai on a three-year, $2.2 million extension, while the manager of Eels winger Maika Sivo emailed clubs last week seeking expressions of interest for 2022.

Mitchell was set to earn in excess of $900,000 a year in 2022 and 2023, but his new deal is set to reflect last week’s NRL announcement, which saw the sport finalise a revised collective bargaining agreement with a six per cent reduction in the salary cap to deal with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mitchell was in sublime touch in the weeks before he suffered a hamstring injury against Parramatta saw him miss the club’s finals campaign. Mitchell started the year off slowly but was beginning to justify the club’s faith in him to wear the No.1 jersey before he was struck down through injury.

The Rabbitohs paid around $600,000 for Mitchell in 2020, with the Roosters chipping in around $200,000 of his salary before he was released. The news is a huge boost for South Sydney ahead of what shapes as a crucial year for the club. Coach Wayne Bennett will finish up at the end of the year, while Adam Reynolds, Dane Gagai, Braidon Burns, Jaydn Su’A and Tevita Tatola are all off contract.

Like South Sydney, Penrith are also in the process of locking up their biggest stars. Centre Stephen Crichton has all but agreed to a three year extension. A similar deal awaits Luai, while the club is also in negotiations with Isaah Yeo.

Yeo and Nathan Cleary are the frontrunners to replace James Tamou as Penrith captain, with the Penrith lock set to be rewarded for his 2020 campaign with a significant increase in his extension with the club.

The Panthers are also considering signing Wests Tigers back Paul Momirovski in a deal which would potentially allow fullback Daine Laurie the opportunity to leave immediately and link up with the joint venture club.

Laurie has asked for a release from the final year of his deal with the Panthers but the club is adamant both he and Canterbury-bound Matt Burton will see out 2020 at Penrith. That could change, at least in the case of Laurie, if Penrith find a suitable replacement. Burton, a renowned five-eighth, is expected to start the year in the centres in place of Brent Naden.

Momo should be a starting centre ahead of both of our enigmatic "game breakers". ...he's actually better at the job than either of them. He had a starting spot here but moved his life to melbourne to help the club out and now has to earn his spot back from a couple of loose cannons who we hope can recapture some consistent form from the distant past. Total disrespect.

I think if anyone believes Jet/BJ will be our centre pairing / actually play consistent footy all year they must also believe in Santa Claus. I reckon Momo will play a fair bit of first grade this year whether it be in the centres or on the wing

We don’t particularly have many players that can score 14 tries in 19 first grade games aswell as being handy at goa kicking..

And who's eyes dont cross with the stress of holding a defensive line 10 metres out....prior to his hand injury he went ok down there and has spent three consecutive seasons being coached by three different premiership winning coaches...he's still young...is fit...strong..intelligent and professional .in everything he does plus scores tries....WTF other box does he need to tick to be considered more than a disposable utility??

Totally agree.Momo unequivocally ticks all the boxes. His career is on an upwards trajectory.Solid & smart defender good goalkicker & has developed the knack to score tries.Very under-rated player.

That piss-weak bum on 815k/yr Mbye has scored 8 tries for us in 41 games & most of them were dive overs with nobody in front of him.To think that Momo earns a fraction of the biggest fraudster at concord.

If Maguire has the desire to serve out his full contract he can’t be selecting the pissant in the 17.

I've been hearing AJ has been training in the FB spot aswell, I hope for the clubs sake and AJs sake he makes a good go of it. I think he played plenty of fullback in the juniors and has very fast feet

And a quick look over his 14 tries from 19 games or whatever it is.. he's scored a good many with footwork and being quick between the ears. ..5 metres out against 2 defenders he's pretty much as likely to get over the line as anyone in the NRL apart from tedesco or Mitchell. If we lose this guy's future we will regret it.

Agree. Most of the tries he scored were actually pretty impressive. Intercepts, swabbing off 3 defenders etc. I hope he stays personally but would understand his frustration of being behind the laziest centre pairing in the comp

Have we given up on Laurie coming this year? This stupidity is rivaling the LM saga. On Momirovski, he’s locked in for 5/8 and GK in Rd 1 due to Doueihi’s suspension but who knows for Rd 2. Surely he replaces either BJ or Roberts for that game! Imagine if we actually won Rd1 and Momirovski has a blinder!

So who recruited Laurie and why..If we arnt prepared to make a swap to get a top notch fullback which we desperately need now (who at least knows the basics and even better can definitely excel) then why recruit him at all...We’ve had enough players that just fill a position and nothing more..that’s why we are where we are..kepa could have been tried at fullback last year then maybe wouldn’t have needed laurie at all and had more money for a decent upgrade wherever needed..At least being proactive with kepa now

Not sure who, but why should be pretty straightforward. We have a logjam of players who can fill 3,4 and 6 but a dearth of players for 1,2 and 5. That's why we signed Kepaoa after the Saab deal fell through and it's why we were interested in Mansour. I reckon we need to keep looking for more. Jensen Taumoepeau might be an option. Don't know if Pereira is on the outer, but he's a decent returner of the football.

2 “swap” type deals we’ve walked away from for Laurie - 1 with Mansour included and 2 with Momo ..So Laurie can’t be that special..so why bother with him. He is the second fullback we’ve recruited that we don’t even know if he can play fullback.. AD couldn’t is Laurie the same.Likely
