Penrith coach Ivan Cleary has advocated for the introduction of trade windows to better regulate the player market, believing the existing free-for-all system is “messy” and creates confusion for players and fans.
What a f**kin' hypocrite.
Happy to walk out on a contract with Wests and f**k up their season, but when a couple of second string players want out so they can try for a starting jersey somewhere else he goes all holier-than-thou.

The Siebold and Cleary reputations are pretty much mud. I doubt we'll see a lot of it in the future to be honest.

The difference being, of course, that the Wests club and Cleary reached a settlement that was acceptable to both parties. Not many coaches reach the end of their contracts, mostly the parting of the ways is club-instigated and allowed for in the wording.

The first season under Maguire, Wests finished one point out of the 8. The final season under Cleary they were 6 points out of the 8.

Anyway this isn't about coaches. This is about clubs whinging to the media trying to get contracted players released early.

There needs to be greater rewards/incentive for developing raw talent into NRL standard players. I don't understand why this subject has been overlooked in the past 20 years or so. It's just dumb to not want a higher standard from our players and game in general.

He's right, and all of LU knows it.

Matt Burton has been put in a horrible position by the Bulldogs. He deserves better.
Probably deserves better than spending the year in reserve grade as well.

It's a shame Ivan is suddenly such a stickler for contracts though...

On a slightly pedantic note, I wish the media and everyone would stop referring to it as "trade windows". Clubs do not "trade" players like in the NFL. It is, to be more accurate, free agent signing windows as that is what this is mostly about - players coming off contract signing for the future year/s with a different club.

That is on the Bulldogs. They need to come to the party and propose a deal.

The way they have behaved so far has been embarrassing. Not befitting of a club with such a proud history.

Says a fan of one of the slimiest clubs in the comp.
