From Zero Tackle,

NRL to introduce trade window by 2023

The NRL aims to introduce a trade window by 2023 to stop player agents from using phantom offers to drive up their clients value.

The League plans to introduce two trade windows, one right after the Grand Final and another in January, in an effort to stop players and clubs from breaking contracts before they expire.

“Our system needs to be updated and there are frustrations for everyone,” NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said and reported by David Riccio from The Daily Telegraph.

“We think this is a genuine opportunity to make our game even more appealing to fans and if we’re running a sports entertainment business here, then positive change is good for all of us.’’

Under the current system, weaker clubs have been used as ‘contract bait’ to increase interest in off-contract players.

Two trade periods will increase transparency in allowing clubs to negotiate deals that will benefit them as well as the players and aim to stop players from signing contracts with other teams well before their current contract expires.

From the Daily Telegraph,

Sam Burgess: Former Souths captain caught by camera, police say

It was a hi-tech police camera which caught former Souths and England captain Sam Burgess when he was charged with traffic offences earlier this month.

A hi-tech camera fitted to a highway patrol car identified that Burgess’ BMW X5 was unregistered, which is why he was stopped on the Old Hume Highway on February 15, police sources confirmed.

The revelation contradicts speculation that police officers were acting on a tip-off when they pulled the former South Sydney captain and England star over.

Burgess was charged with driving an unregistered car and police will allege the Englishman has never held a NSW driver’s licence, despite first playing for Souths in the NRL back in 2010.

Police also allege he returned a positive roadside drug test for cocaine, which has been sent away for further analysis.

Results of the testing could take several weeks.

Burgess was driving to pick up his two children.

The Sunday Telegraph understands the visit was initially planned to take place at the property he rents just outside of Bowral.

Hours before though, it is believed Burgess was notified he needed to drive into Bowral itself to collect them from the local Botanic Gardens.

Police pulled Burgess over when he exited the highway from Sydney.

He was issued a court attendance notice for the charges of driving a vehicle while a resident of more than three months and not obtaining a local licence and using an unregistered vehicle and is due to appear in Moss Vale Local Court on May 4.

Meanwhile it can also be revealed Burgess has lodged an appeal against his conviction for intimidating his ex-wife Phoebe’s father Mitchell Hooke at his Glenquarry property on October 19, 2019 with the intention of causing him physical and mental harm.

The case is listed for mention in the District Court on March 15.

The ex-Rabbitohs captain was sentenced on February 5 to a two-year community correction order with anger management support.

He had pleaded not guilty to intimidation and a back-up count of common assault over the verbal clash with Mr Hooke at his sprawling Glenquarry property on October 19, 2019. The assault charge was dismissed.

Burgess is forbidden from approaching his father-in- law, the former CEO of the Minerals Council of Australia, nor is he allowed within one kilometre of Mr Hooke’s farm.

Players struggle to keep pace as NRL rule changes take effect in trials: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...s/news-story/8243e846d09936bc2000abef8d7a2a7a

From Zero Tackle, Amone was on a train and trial with us this Pre-Season but it looks like that's where it's ended,

Wests Tigers reportedly set to sign former Rabbitohs prop Tom Amone

Wests Tigers are set to announce the signing of former Rabbitohs prop Tom Amone to their 30-man roster, leaving Michael McGuire with just the two spots left ahead of the 2021 season.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald’s Christian Nicolussi, the Tigers have added the 24-year-old to their squad.

Amone played nine matches for Souths after making his debut with the club in 2019 and was one of seven players delisted by the Rabbitohs in November last year, joining James Roberts, Ethan Lowe, Jack Johns, Cory Denniss, Kurt Dillon and Ky Rodwell on the outer at Redfern.

The Westmead local will look to add plenty of depth and selection pressure for Maguire, with new recruits Joe Ofahengaue and James Tamou set to man starting roles this season.

The Tigers announced the extension of young halfback Jock Madden to a new deal over the weekend, with the 20-year-old prolonging his stay at Concord until the end of the 2022 season.

Gotta ask the question guys.
Adam Reynolds is off contract soon and he has a strong relationship with Madge as well as having a soft spot for the Tigers when he was younger.

Are the Tigers a threat or taking him if we don’t offer him a longer contract??

Of course. However i believe that they'll only be a threat if Souths are unwilling to budge.

I doubt he will. 4 years is a big ask but 2+player option for a third should get it done for both parties imo.
But they need to balance that against the risk of losing Taafe if he is being asked to wait 3 or 4 years for his shot at first grade. There are reports teams already have him on their radar

At the end of the day, AR is only worth a 2 year deal ,taafe has been in the background for a couple of years now, he knows what his future holds,he wont leave, and if AR decides to go well arivadeci and thanks, like all teams, eventually the time closes for all and we have to plan for the future.

No one is asking Taaffe to wait 3 to 4 years. If he's good enough to replace AR (or Cody), he will and i expect AR would retire if it came to that. That's where the player option becomes a part of it.

Taaffe isn't even in the top 30 at the moment so as it stands, AR is the best candidate for the position not only this season but next too.

Yup, certainly not happy about this!! Not sure why they've done this and it's a bit of a joke to be honest.

Also, from Sporting News,

'Got to three prelims and failed': Cooper Cronk backs Rabbitohs in Adam Reynolds contract dispute

Two-time premiership-winning halfback Cooper Cronk believes South Sydney's refusal to offer captain Adam Reynolds a long-term contract upgrade is justified.

Reynolds dropped a bombshell last week when he revealed to Sporting News he and the Rabbitohs were "not on the same page" over contract negotiations.

The off-contract veteran halfback is seeking the security of a longer-term deal, while South Sydney are at this stage only willing to offer him a one-year extension beyond this year.

Reynolds is ranked amongst the best specialist halfbacks in the game and possesses arguably the most elite general play kicking game in the NRL.

But former counterpart Cronk claims that as the halfback and now captain, Reynolds must take responsibility for the Rabbitohs reaching three straight preliminary finals and failing to claim the title.

"I can understand where Souths are coming from in that regard," the five-time Dally M Halfback of the Year told Fox League.

"Yes, he does have one of the best kicking games in the comp, and he's the captain of the club.

"But he's got to three prelims in the last three years and failed.

"That's part of (being in) the spine, part of a halfback, part of a leader, is to get the team to the prelim and then take them to the trophy."

The stall in contract negotiations is hardly the ideal situation for both club and captain for the Rabbitohs on the eve of the new campaign.

With South Sydney again tipped for a deep finals run, and even well-backed to repeat their 2014 premiership feat, the club will need Reynolds at his best.

Penrith Panthers great Greg Alexander believes the dispute over his future could in fact galvanise Reynolds towards earning a better deal.

"It's put a bit of pressure on him but I think that's great motivation for Adam Reynolds," Alexander said.

"From what I know and have seen of Adam Reynolds, he'll have a great start to the year.

"I'll think they'll have to move (to re-sign him), because I think Souths will be good to start the year and he'll be in form and that will see Souths (offer him more years)."

A Rabbitohs junior, Reynolds has played all 206 of his first-grade games at Redfern and is hailed as an icon of the proud club, having been an integral member of the 2014 premiership side.

However, the club are taking a cautious approach given Reynolds' age, plus the upcoming contract negotiations with Origin star Dane Gagai. It's reported the emergence of young playmaker Blake Taffe is also a factor.

Reynolds admitted to Sporting News that it was disappointing the club wasn't willing to reward him with a longer-term offer.

"It would be ideal (to stay at Souths). But in saying that, it's probably a long way from happening at the moment," Reynolds said.

"We've started negotiations but we're not right on the same page at the moment.

"I'd like to play for another three or four years. I'd like to sign for three years.

"I don't really want to sign a couple of contracts towards the back end of my career. I'd like that bit of security.

"It's something that we're sorting out at the moment and hopefully we can come to a conclusion."

Cronk is right about Reynolds. Reynolds has failed to get Souths beyond the final 4 playoff game for years now. Souths only looked like premiership contenders once Keary joined the halves late in 2014

Reynolds is great at kicking pressure field goals or goals late in games. But his attacking play in general in the halves is lacking

On all three occasions, Souths were underdogs. There is some merit to an extent from Cronk's comments but to say that he is the reason is just creating clickbait.

League is a team game. You win as a team and you lose as a team. To put the blame for us falling short squarely on Reyno is just blatantly wrong.
Couldn't agree more!! In the past three years, there's no way we'd even make those Prelims without Reyno.

From the Daily Mail, a massive well done to Cam and his partner. What great people they are and I'm so glad we have him at our club. Souch a touching gesture, all class.

A young woman with a 'fighting spirit' won't live to see her 21st birthday after overcoming a teenage meth addiction, homelessness and ovarian cancer.

Hayley Smith wound up on the streets when she was 15 after running away from her western Sydney home and developing a meth addiction.

The now-20-year-old learned on Monday that she has just days to live after an initial diagnosis said she wouldn't survive beyond her 21st birthday in July.

Her family are grieving the impending loss and struggling to come to terms with the fact that they'd only 'just got their girl back' when she was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2019.

She'd finished a stint in rehab for a drug and alcohol dependency which was topped off by meeting then-up-and-coming South Sydney Rabbitohs star Cam Murray after a match in 2018.

After completing her treatment, Hayley moved into her own home, re-enrolled in school and was determined to become a better person.

Her brother Nathan Sproule told Daily Mail Australia that Hayley spoke very little about her time on the streets and in the grips of addiction.

She couch surfed, got into street fights and was using meth and marijuana regularly, but other than that, Hayley will likely take the knowledge of what she went through with her to the grave.

While taking classes at school, Hayley worked on weekends and nights to support herself and had 'completely turned her life around' in the lead up to her diagnosis.

Hayley was competing in a school cross country competition when she collapsed suddenly. She was rushed to hospital where doctors discovered a cancerous cyst the size of a golf ball on her ovaries.

Surgeons removed one of Hayley's ovaries and she began chemotherapy shortly after.

'We'd only just got her back, and then we got the news that she had cancer,' her brother Nathan Sproule said.

Everyone took it really hard.'

Mr Sproule said even while undergoing chemotherapy, the then-teenager was determined to support herself and continued working, often needing to commute via two trains and a bus each and every day.

Hayley was declared cancer free later that year, but by April 2020 doctors discovered it had returned.

While the prognosis was stage four ovarian cancer, Hayley was determined to keep fighting and underwent a full hysterectomy in June that year.

Still, the cancer continued to get worse and doctors suggested a new bout of chemotherapy, which concluded in January 2021.

By early February, doctors informed Hayley and her family that chemotherapy did not work in reducing or erasing the cancer, and she was told nothing further could be done.

Initially doctors said she likely wouldn't make it to her 21st birthday in July 2021.

While receiving treatment, nurses in her ward learned of her obsession with NRL, and one of the staff who knew Murray personally let him know of Hayley's diagnosis.

Mr Sproule told Daily Mail Australia Murray then sent Hayley a text asking if he and his partner could visit her in hospital.

Hayley finished a stint in rehab for a drug and alcohol dependency which was topped off by meeting then-up-and-coming South Sydney Rabbitohs star Cam Murray after a match in 2018

'It wasn't through his club or anything like that, he just organised it on his own,' Mr Sproule explained.

'He showed up with his personal jersey and some hand cream and other gifts and a really nice message, and then they spent about two hours with Hayley just talking to her and cheering her up.'

After Murray left, several of his teammates, including Latrell Mitchell, Adam Reynolds and Dane Gagai sent Hayley video recorded messages sending their well wishes.

Mr Sproule said the effort the men put in meant the world to Hayley as she struggled to come to terms with her diagnosis.

On Monday, Hayley and her family learned that her condition had deteriorated. Doctors now think she has just days to live.

Mr Sproule had only just returned to his home in Western Australia after three weeks away from his pregnant fiancee and job.

Hayley's family are raising money to give her the funeral she wants and deserves. Hayley wants to be buried at a cemetery in Sydney's south-east

'My mum can't really take much more time off, neither can I. It's hard for her because if she doesn't work, she doesn't get paid. And she needs income still, too,' Mr Sproule explained.

'Hayley's coming to terms with the fact that she probably won't leave hospital again. Not now.'

The family are raising money on GoFundMe to give Hayley the send off she deserves.

She has asked to be buried in a cemetery in south-east Sydney, and early estimates suggest the funeral will cost at least $25,000.

'After everything she's been through, it is really hard to hear,' Mr Sproule said.

'She still gets visits from her [drug and alcohol] counselors and they've been raising money to help us. They say she is a real success story from the program.'

The NRL is set for a trade window as early as 2022 — and it could fix the market’s ugliest problem: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...s/news-story/622ee8285e0bcc8b224f5bc9b157a5ae

From Zero Tackle,

Growing calls for NRL to introduce a draft

The discussion surrounding the introduction of an NRL trade window once again surfaced in the past week, with league boss Andrew Abdo flagging a reformed transfer market is a “top priority” for the league’s future.

“Our system needs to be updated and there are frustrations for everyone,” Abdo told The Daily Telegraph over the weekend.

“We think this is a genuine opportunity to make our game even more appealing to fans and if we’re running a sports entertainment business here, then positive change is good for all of us.’’

Both fans and critics of the league have suggested the NRL could move a step closer to the AFL’s trade model to improve player movements and end mid-season signings.

While the concept of a trade period remains fresh in the minds of many who have questioned the NRL’s current player market system, reporter Andrew Webster has suggested the league should look to introduce a draft to enhance player recruitment, further mirroring the AFL.

“I think the NRL needs to look at a draft,” Webster said on SEN 1170.

“The transfer of players between clubs during the season isn’t working.

“The game would benefit as the AFL does with all the stories and media interest in the off-season.

“Instead of focusing on off-field scandals they can focus on the draft.

“I think it works beautifully in other sports, it’s an event. Look at how much coverage it generates in the NBA and NFL in particular.

“I think it’s something the game has to look at as well.”

Journalist Paul Kent called for the NRL to look into formulating a draft system midway through last year during a tough financial period for St George Illawarra.

“It is also the false economy in the salary cap, that’s what people don’t understand,” Kent said on NRL 360.

“There is a false economy there. If you are a $400,000 a year player and that’s your true value, but the Roosters come and say play for us and we will give you $350,000.

“Then you say I’m going to be $50,000 short but I’m going to make the grand final. I’m a chance to play finals and semi-finals every year and build my value for my next contract.

“If the Dragons or the Titans give you $400,000 you say I’m not going there. So they have to pay $450,000.”

The NRL announced this week that the 30-man squad deadline has been moved to August 1, meaning clubs could sign rival players on the eve of finals to increase their premiership bid.
