Through lockdown, money spent on gambling has boomed.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It is a total growth industry.

Sport has only become an excuse for people to gamble. And if Murdoch is forking out money to the game for tv rights and then spending money on gambling. Well, you can see 1 plus 1 equals a potato.

V Landys and Murdoch will be hand in glove
Remind me what gambling operations in Australia does 'murdock' have ?

As the article says, Uncle Rupert Murdoch is about to branch out into the gambling industry and with Crown under the pump, the world will be his oyster.

Then he will be flogging his gambling company in every break of every game as if gambling was a natural as breathing air.

Thats a big call, Crown -packer family to Murdock.
But to answer my question Murdock has NO betting operations in Australia.
it a very wide marketn Australia-i thought other industry players will take a look- But who knows what the Gov will say crown has to do-

Turn it up, why don't I see adds by Crown for betting on the NRL?
a. Because they don't do betting on the NRL, they are a casino.
So it's 'wild speculation' on your part and Crown casinos would last type of gambling operation suited to this type of betting, now if you thinking about something like for say tabcorp/sportsbet.

Its called Fantasy Sports gambling not TAB/Sportsbet, its a totally different dimension.

Does Crown pay for the tv rights for NRL Answer no

Does Murdoch pay for the tv rights for the NRL Answer YES

Do you get it yet?

Do you know how big the Murdoch empire is?

The Murdoch family has profited big time from the gambling industry over the years and they are doing it again with Dublin-based Flutter Entertainment, which last week bought an additional 37% stake in US fantasy sports outfit FanDuel for a whopping US$4.2 billion.

The fantasy sports gambling is huge in the USA

The Murdochs built up Sky Betting & Gaming which ended up delivering clear profits of about $2 billion to the broader Murdoch interests (via Sky PLC) when that business was sold to Canada’s The Stars Group for US$4.7 billion in 2018.

Having tasted success in the UK, Fox Corp subsequently created the 50-50 Fox Bet joint venture in the US with The Stars Group once the US Supreme Court legalised sports gambling in May 2018.

Fox Corp took a 5% stake in Stars for US$236 million as part of the Fox Bet joint venture which then became a 2.6% stake in Flutter once those two businesses merged earlier this year. The original 3.23 million Flutter shares which Fox Corp inherited through the merger are now worth around US$650 million but Fox Corp has subsequently supported two further placements by Flutter this year as it dives further into the gambling business.

And now it will come to Australia and be just as huge here with a push through Foxtel, which just happens to be owned by the Murdochs and just happens to boradcast the NRL

Am I leaving enough breadcrums for you to follow the path? Hansel and Gretel style...

Life is not linear.

It's pretty obvious where this is all headed, What happens in the US usually happens here also.

An interesting paragraph from today's SMH article:

While insisting that the “power of Fox” is important to Flutter, Mr Jackson added that Fox Bet is “not a great product and they didn’t come to market with an enormous set of customers on their database”. Flutter now expects its US revenues to hit $US20 billion by 2025, double last year’s estimate.

Guess who has a big database and is in partnership with News Corp? Yep, that's right, the NRL!!

They are in partnership and have a strong say.

They ran Grant, Smith and Greenberg out because they threatened to take the game in a different direction threatening Murdoch's interest and future business plans.

True it was a great pic.

If you listened to RL Digest podcast on the super league war the original plan of News Corp was for the ARL to administer the game on their behalf. It seems now 25 years latter this is where we are at without the war. They gave the thumbs up for a 17th team, why?

Why 17th Team? Since broncos are somewhat owned by Lachlan, clearing the way I suppose, however I posted a alternative to one salary cap ($ 10 million ) team - A comp of say 8 teams in QLD of a semi professional nature. We will agree to disagree, however I would not write off Lachlan, it 's good to have a billionaire as a 'fan' at least his 'our' billionaire and can go with Hollywood celebrity. Old and now gone Kerry Packer was ace in the hole for rugby league. I read a good story about John Quale took him too Redfern Oval for a game, Packer took one look around and was hooked by atmosphere as it was authentic. Then he made business with rugby league- we even got the drop on AFL in them days.

I use to think that way about Packer however he saw league as a cash cow. He was to blame for the war as much as Murdoch. He could have done a deal and saved alot of trouble.

to increase the brisbane betting market on nrl maybe? Starting to make more sense now given Vlandys is totally in bed with Murdoch via his day job. The fact he has hidden betting revenue in the accounts is also an interesting development.

You are a piece of work How is being head a racing Authority being in bed with Murdock , don't snipe, don't change subject, we might say you in bed with Murdock since you read 'his' papers'. If you looked at Vlandy pay slip, the paying organisation is NSW Racing Authority NOT NEWS LTD.Again this is anther point you will just babble away on. I will give you $100 dollars to bet this season on anything you want, preferable the NRL,just show/prove that Murdock runs/part owns a betting organisation in Australia, and the cash is yours, with a beers as well. Stick to the facts.

Partners in all businesses have a say.I have little love for News ,they loved to screw the Sharks.Medi aowners have too much power, too much influence and too much bias.

Conversely with all their power , they would also had input in helping appoint those guys at the start.
One with an ego, one with SFA knowledge of sport admin or rugby league and the other playing the nice guy to everyone and pleasing few. They must have got rid of the Galloping one who was a former employee. The same guy who didn't apparently know the AFL had people lobbying Govts for cash.
They all did some decent things at times, other times stuffed up.

Let alone that Moffett ,who knew more about Malvern Star bikes, than football stars.Still scratching my head ,as to what he actually did at H/O ,except use the cool water dispenser and the toilet rolls.

lol there’s a long and incestuous relationship between the two organisations worth a lot of money and influence to both parties

Good point Perth Red. You have perfectly articulated the argument there. Murdoch once tried to buy Rugby League with Super League but soon they came to an agreement that the NRL and Murdoch would work hand in glove in everything.

Once Fantasy football which is bigger than horse racing in the USA takes over here, Murdoch will have all markets making him money and cross pollinating across all his diversified portfolios

Gambling - NRL - Media- Gambling - NRL - Media - Gambling - NRL-Media-Gambling-NRL-Media-Gambling-NRL-Media-Gambling-NRL-Media-Gambling......

in a never ending circle where one promotes the other...

LOL. Good to see some intelligence here. It's hard dredging through the bland cesspool of vomit that is internet forums. Occasionally you stumble on someone who can actually think.

Since Murdock made a huge sale of Fox to Disney- i have wondered what area or what use he would make of 'his sale' money. But most of the money from the sale was in shares in Disney- And he hasnt sold his shares in disney yet- so see what happens - maybe really big in betting - in Australia?
Your AFR story had a link to real corp action in the betting companies ( as opposed in your story which was light in light in action but heavy in suppositions) to real players such as Landbrokes (owned by Etain UK) is doing the calculations over acquiring Tabcorp. Thats a big move!

London-listed betting giant Entain will pitch itself to the broader racing industry as a long-term wagering operator that can use its global scale and digital expertise to boost participation in the sport and grow revenue streams.

The $13 billion group confirmed in London on Tuesday night that it had lodged a proposal to buy Tabcorp’s wagering and media division. It is one of two offers in front of the Tabcorp board, with the other believed to be from a private equity firm.

Both bids are indicative and incomplete, with sources suggesting the price tags attached may not yet tempt Tabcorp to the bargaining table at this early stage.

Entain declined to comment on its offer on Wednesday, but sources said it was attracted by the opportunity to combine the Tabcorp brand with Entain’s local brands, Ladbrokes and Neds. The combined entity would have about 35 per cent of the online betting market in Australia, plus Tabcorp’s retail networks in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
