Ivan's use of the bench last year was questionable at best. Carrying players on the bench and giving them no minutes adds nothing imo. Yes we had a great year, but ic needs to improve his bench rotations this year.

I dont car how good yeo and fish are. If they've played 60 odd straight and are out on there feet, keeping them on the park does nothing. IC needs to trust the 17 he picks and play all 4 benchies.
Not always correct but Ivan does have to be far more reactive and make calls on the fly.

Plenty of coaches do the same thing. They always like to keep interchanges left incase of injuries. We just notice Ivan more cause we follow Penrith.

Look after Souths play Storm. 2 of the best coaches ever and will use basically a 15 player team.

Last year typically Tamou would go off at 20-25 minutes, and return at 60 mins, Fish would play 30 and 20 or 20 and 30, and Leota the 20 minutes either side of half time. I'd expect Leota to take the minutes Tamou was doing, with Leniu taking over the Leota role, playing the middle 40.
So 45 max. Thanks very much.

Exactly the attitude that will see us go backwards. Coaches like Bellamy and Robinson are forever trying new things and improving themselves and the team. Don't just rest on last seasons llaurels.

Just because something worked doesn't mean we can't be better!
That's an attitude you'll struggle to get traction with fans since they are emotionally invested so when something is good or was once good the idea of change seems like a betrayal.

Yep. All the great coaches throughout any sport in history have always strived to get better.

Craig Bellamy is probably the greatest nrl coach I can remember in my time watching the game. I can guarantee he doesn't have the attitude "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Imo IC clearly lacked faith/trust in the 4th benchie last year. That player always got minimal minutes. It's something for him to work on this year.

My old diesel only generates 83kw - it isn't broken, but with a few tweaks it certainly goes a lot better. Sports is the same, introduce new players, tactics, training methods etc. The game has changed an awful lot from the unlimited tackle days - a time when Souths and Saints just bought the biggest strongest players and just hit it up the middle.

How many minutes did Nico Hynes get in the GF?

Unless you only give your starters one stint it is impossible to give all the bench decent unless of injury

Like here

JFH goes off/ back on
Leota off/back on
Kikau off/back on

There is 6 of the 8 gone

You would want to give Yeo a break. You either waste another change getting him back on or you give him 60-65mins and he doesn't finish the game

Which gives a bench guy 15 mins but if you get an injury you finish with 12 guys on

Too many tweeks and it breaks down though

Agree with Franklin. Having the last guy on the e bench playing minimal or zero minutes is not in itself a sign of poor bench management. If so then you are saying Bellamy, Bennett, Hasler can’t manage a bench cause they do that often.

1st half
8. Jfh (off at 30 for eiso) 1st change
9. Api
10. Leota (off at 20 for spencer) 2nd
11. Caps (switch sides with Martin at 30)
12. Martin (off at 30 for kiks) 3rd
13. Yeo

14. May
15. Spence
16. Eiso
17. Kiks

2nd half

Eiso off jfh on 55. 4th
Spencer off leota on 60th 5th change
Capewell off at 50 Martin on 6th
May on at 60 for yeo. 7th.

That leaves you with players getting;
Jfh 55 two stints
Leota 40 x2
Caps 50 straight
Martin 60 x2
Yeo 60 straight

May final 20 when teams are gassed. Can come on and do his thing in attack.
Kiks final 50
Spencer 40
Eiso 25

Leaves one change in the bag for an injury.

Having no changes left and finishing with 12 is poor management or having your good players off for key moments is also bad bench usage

Even that has it's problems.

Say it is a close game. Yeo the best forward in the side is off at the end. Not ideal

Also Kikau is going to be more effective starting to ensure we have possession while he is on the field. Look at the tries we score on his early on
