"It’s very realistic to say that we’ll have a second team in Brisbane in 2023": V'landys

Why won't it add television ratings? Parochial means you support your state. It doesn't mean you support one sport and no others. Not to mention a lite Melbourne Storm would still be achieving far more ratings wise than the cannibalised Brisbane audience. Similarly why won't it bring in players? Currently NRLWA and NRLSA have been continuing along developing game with minimal support and pathways. How would having a pathway be a bad thing?

More to the point. Do you genuinely believe there is some massive untapped League crowd in Brisbane who are dedicated to the sport but have been hanging out for a specific club? Television breakdowns already tell us that the Queensland league audience has its teams.

New Zealand is the same. They follow the Warriors, there isn't this pile of fans who like the sport but don't have a team.

Putting more teams in the same marketplace isn't expansion. All it will do is either flop or eat into existing fanbases.
Ratings and crowds aren't the only reason they want the next 2 expansion clubs in SEQ & NZ2, its the players pool that will increase, thus feeding more players into 1st grade, plus of course the game in those two stadiums every week, not every fortnight, forgetting them to expand to Adelaide or Perth will only put more pressure for the new start up clubs to find a 30man competetive roster, whereas NZ and SEQ can be fairly competitive at reserve grade level already, and would only need a few marquee players to boost them into consideration against the current 16 teams.
If we expanded in Perth in 2023, it would be made up of 20+ reserve graders from everywhere but perth, maybe 2-3 Marquee players, if lucky, and the remainder of locals.
Where they want is SEQ now, where there is a whole Qcup to choose from along with the marquee signings, and a possible paul green or wayne bennett.
Its a stronger chance at finals success than any other area

I've argued something similar to this before. This idea that Brisbane is some massive untapped market is a myth however I still think the city needs a proper derby and Brisbane needs more NRL football played in it. There is also the fact that Brisbane's population has practically doubled since the Broncos came in as well. The Broncos supporter base hasn't doubled in that time though.

Of course. NZRL has already said they have no money to have a second team. There's also been no evidence to suggest that Brisbane 2 will have a fanbase that isn't just Broncos fans being lost.
21k people flocked to see the Crushers in 1995. Broncos drew 36k that year. So 57k between them and proof that you're full of shit.

Manly on the other hand offer nothing. Their crowds and attendances are shit and the club has a tiny catchment. They are a liability to RL. Give their licence to the Pirates.

This is delusional. Ratings show Queenslanders watch Broncos, followed by the Cowboys, Titans and Storm. That's why Ch9 wants a 2nd team in Brisbane.

If you want to see shit ratings, look no further than your shit club.

So where did the 21k fans who flocked to watch the Crushers get flogged come from in 1995 while Broncos maintained an average of 36k?

Let’s see if we even get a 17th club before we get too excited about where the 18th club might be. At this rate we’ll all be pushing up daisies before any of these hypotheticals becomes a reality lol

Lel calm down Stallion Junior.

The Crushers crowds halved in their second season. Also apparently you think those fans have been hibernating for 25 years.

It's hilarious how upset you get about this. Just buy a Titans membership if you so desperately want to support an SEQ team that isn't the Broncos.

I dont think there can be any doubt that having another nrl club playing out of Suncorp is long overdue. Let’s not kid ourselves it’s expansion though, it’s consolidation of an already RL mad region. Not expanding at same time with a genuine expansion 18th club is a travesty but is par for the course for an nrl management that has stagnated for a very very long time.

Their crowds in 1996 were still head and shoulders better than the Sydney average. The only Sydney team to average more than the Crushers in 1996 was the Roosters. Manly were below the Crushers, despite winning the premiership that year.

You wouldn't have a clue how many RL fans in Brisbane hate the Broncos and are ready to actively support a second team.

I'm going to have to back @Get Rid of The Donkeys claim that there is a large group of RL supporters that will jump on Brisbane 2 (whichever bid it is). I don't think those that aren't from Brisbane understand how polarising the Broncos are here.

Yes, those other supporters probably have a team, most likely the Storm, Cowboys or Titans but that doesn't allow them to attend Suncorp to support their team in their own city every fortnight. Would all of these fans jump ship to Brisbane 2 as their team? Probably not... would most of them adopt them as a second team and attend games at Suncorp? Probably yes. Would Brisbane 2 average about 25k in their first season and grow slowly from there? There is a very good chance

Eaxactly right. The 16k who attended Lang Park in 1988 to watch the Broncos all had a BRL club that they supported for decades. It didn't stop them from becoming Broncos fans. The same will happen with non-Broncos fans who live in Brisbane. The key will be to promote the club to children who haven't formed an alliance with any particular team.

Fk me PR, delusional is you, Abdo already said NZ2, you know this already. So why bother him mentioning it, to stir up ol' WA, no.
Its all about pathways, and keeping locals local. Growing participation! where we already are, not where we have to build from scratch.

Ah, FootyIndustry.

How about you put it into perspective?

That graph shows the total number of viewers on FTA and PTV for each team over 2020. Some teams are screened on FTA more than others, so it's not a good measurement of popularity. For a better understanding of who watches who, try looking at the PTV ratings.

RL ratings in Melbourne are terrible. SA will be same. Melbourne has not produced one home grown player who did not already have a RL background.
There are three things you want to increase with a new team. Crowds yes, Storm crowds are good and Adelaide would be reasonable. But there has been no uplift in participation or Tv ratings. For some reason Storm has not been able to increase participation the way the AFL has in Brisbane and Sydney. I think Adelaide would be the same. One of the reasons participation has grown is that a second club means more players doing clinics at junior clubs. But the AFL expansion into NSW and Qld is yet to impact TV ratings despite strong crowds. It has only been a partial success. .
The AFL’s expansion with second sides into heartland markets saw then introduce teams in Perth and Adelaide market that already has strong clubs that ‘most’ of the city already supported. Both were a total success. Two decades later and the support for the original teams has increased along with the new teams, who both have average attendances in the top half of clubs. TV ratings also increased. Put simply, a crosstown rival increased overall support and attendances. I see no reason why a second Brisbane team could not achieve same.
Plus Rugby League needs to do something about declining player numbers in SEQ. Another club with players visiting local junior teams is vital.

PTV Manly are still ahead of St George, Canterbury, Gold Coast and New Zealand.

Better than your shít popularity contest in that stoopid graph that has no NZ warriors.... how dumb
Theres no one way to define popularity for each team, due to how the schedule affects each FTA game, also form comes into it, plus History of being either famous, villainous, cellar dweller or all of the above.. your obsession with a licence witch hunt is plain stoopid.
They aren't a valuable piece of paper that has be transfered to another club if not used to full potential. We could have 32 clubs, 2-4 in every city, and still have the same amount in NSW, and you'd still try to dredge up ways to put shít on the manlys, newcastle or cronullas of the game..
The point is NRL or the ARLC want new teams that will promote more participation, how does culling existing teams benefit the league, it wont, snd then when a team like roosters starts to have a few lean years, and be where dogs and sea eagles are, theyll all start stabbing each other in the back again.
Where as now the clubs seemed to be unified knowingly holding an infinite NRL licence, so no ones going anywhere, this isn't Union, where theyd cut and run when shít goes sideways.
You want less sydney based teams? Manly plays more games in Gosford, Dragons more in Illawarra, Penrith well, they're 40mins west of civilization, thats already 3 teams spread far and away from the bottleneck in sydney
So really, Tigers, Bulldogs, Eels, Sharks, Rabbits and Roosters, 6 in 16 teams, with further expansion 6 in 20 teams, ratio isn't that bad, and if the Roosters could move to North Sydney or Adelaide, even better
