Blues Have To Find A Way To ...

1. Tedesco
2. Ado-Carr
3. Trbojevic
4. Wighton
5. To'o
6. Walker
7. Cleary

14. Papenhauzen

If you play Wighton at 6 you need someone different on the bench to cover the halves...might be Gutho. With this backline you can afford Papenhauzen on the bench. Or you just start him anyway but it won't be at fullback.

If you don't want a shorter winger in To'o you could move Tommy T and have Latrell at centre. His impending suspension is an untimely one. You also have Tupou and Cotric.

So only one change to the losing backline that qld ran through last year. Did you not learn that you need specialist centres?

Can cover the outside backs but can he cover the 9? And what about the 6 and 7? It's a fair dinkum trap having all these fantastic fullbacks.

You'd just have to find another way. One of the forwards who can play 9 in a pinch.

6/7 injuries would be covered by Wighton. He is a great 6 but if he starts there then it will change a lot of things. We have Luai and Walker who are in great form. I like the security of having a gun in Wighton in the run on side at centre.

The squad needs a focus on versatility especially with the nature of HIAs.

Wouldn’t Wighton as bench utility make way more sense that any of them?

Paps and Turbo in the backline, Wighton to bench

Not sure the sense in picking a bunch of fullbacks it's what lost the series last year. Pick your fullback (will be Tedesco), maybe pick one on the bench like Paps. Not sure these good centres should be missing out just to fit in another two fullbacks. Lomax is in great form, Crighton for Penrith is in good form. Mitchell is more a centre than Turbo or Gutherson or any other fullback.

As a qlder, pick luai. Please!

As long as you can use him as a forward if none of the backs are injured/concussed, otherwise you're giving away a sizeable advantage by running a 3 man bench, and still you have to disrupt the side if someone goes down. Genuine utilities are few and far between and not having one means compromises.

What needs to be understood is that picking the best 17 players and then finding a position for them doesn't always work. In fact it doesn't often work.

Barring injuries... for me.

1 - Tedesco
2 - Addo-Carr
3 - Wighton
4 - Lomax
5 - Trbojevic
6 - Walker
7 - Cleary

If we are to get Papenhuyzen in, i'd think he needs to be 14. He may not be the best option we have at 14 though.

Reasoning...
  • Tedesco - speaks for himself
  • Addo-Carr - best winger in NSW, must have
  • Wighton - Experienced in the centres, can shift to 6 if halves have an injury
  • Lomax - Specialist centre in form.
  • Trbojevic - Superstar status - you've got to get him in the team. Can play anywhere from 1-5.
  • Walker - highly creative 6 who can improvise. Will be better after last year especially with that backline behind him who can follow him around. Best 6 we have for mine.
  • Cleary - best 7 we have.
With Papenhuyzen - He could cover fullback n wing (at a pinch) with injuries. If no injuries, if you need points late in the game he could float in as an extra back, or indeed take quick yards upfield to push the defence back, and get momentum. If he was in, that's how I think he should be used.

I'm all for specialists to play in position at Origin. Trbojevic is one however who you just need to get in there somewhere. Papenhuyzen is a sensational fullback but it would be a gamble to put him on the bench with effectively 2 superstar fullbacks already in the team.

I actually think we have a few more headaches in the forwards than the backs. The backs look a case of who we can squeeze in there. The forwards are more a case of who else do we have..

And the Queensland squad looks far stronger than last year.

Same deal as Wighton. Can cover the backs but how would he go playing lock or second row for 25 minutes if no back went down? Otherwise you're running a 3 man bench.

Honestly, I'd be looking at someone like Jack Bird in the 14.

Mate Jack Bird would be a great option on the bench.

Id def have Wighton in the 13. At centre as suggested, or at 6 (where he won the Dally M).

Wighton shouldn’t go anywhere near the team unless it’s at 6, hasn’t anyone learned after last series he isn’t an origin level centre??

Tom has successfully played centre before for NSW and that's where he'll be if he stays healthy.
