Maybe Hughes wasn't ready at that stage either. Remember Bellyache was swapping and changing his halves for a while there until Hughes finally stepped up.
Hughes hasn't 'stepped up', he has been playing fourth fiddle to Smith/Munster/Papenhuyzen. Now with Smith gone, Hughes is still the least important member of the Melbourne spine. Do you think he would do anything to solve Brisbane's problems? He's at the Storm because he's good enough and cheap enough to fit into the rest of the team.

If he plays like an uncaring, faulty handbrake for 3 years would you feel the same? I think he’s worth 2 but if he wants the 3rd we are right in asking for some risk mitigation
Third year option in the club's favour is worse for him than a two year contract. It would make the first two years more expensive.

Not necessarily. The first 2 years could be in line with our current offer and the 3rd in line with our expectation of his future value

He's certainly going better than our Hughes.

Then he'd be better off just taking the current offer. I wonder if you could have options both ways. For a lower price if triggered by the player and higher if triggered by the club.

He’d only be better off if he can command more than option in that 3rd year. You could theoretically have the mutual option but why bother? Just negotiate a new contract

Probably not but I'm hoping he is a better player. From what I've seen of him he is quick without being elite but an improvement on Niukore as far as speed goes. Both current centres are good defensively but lack speed so Perham (and Peninisi probably next year) will improve that area. Just have to hope their defence is similar to current players.
I am hearing that Haze Mk II will probably be the next centre BA picks into FG. Wants Marata back on the bench asap and no timeline on Waqa being fit to return. Penisini needs another year to improve defence in reggies, whereas Haze Mk II is ready now.

What benefit does a player get from giving the club an option if the first two years are at the same price? But it wouldn't be the same price because as Pou said, a club option would mean raising the price of the first two years. The mutual option would provide security for both sides.

Probably why he's travelled to Darwin.

Brisbane problem child Kotoni Staggs is one boozy blunder away from the sack at the Broncos.

Brisbane bosses have put the controversial strike weapon on notice with Staggs set to front the Broncos board to be read the riot act following his latest alcohol-fuelled off-field indiscretion.

Under investigation from the NRL for the third time in nine months, Staggs could face a fine in excess of $20,000 and a multi-match suspension from the integrity unit after making unsolicited drunken advances to a female at a Brisbane pub.

The incident could have a silver lining for the Broncos, with Parramatta almost certain to abort a big-money poaching bid for the off-contract Staggs — a move that clears the path for Brisbane to finalise a new deal.

But Staggs’ proposed $2.8 million upgrade will now come with a similar set of strict conditions that were applied to Tevita Pangai Jnr last season following the COVID breaches that put the forward’s Broncos career in jeopardy.

He should never have been on the Integrity Unit in the first place.

Nrown can clearly see that 3rd he is at risk of not performing at the level he is now and given his suitors are drying up even if we gave him the 3rd year as a club option, why would we raise the price on the first 2 years? So the only additional cost to us is in the 3rd year which we could decline anyway. Perhaps a clause could be added to the option so if Nrown receives a greater offer he could void our option. Then he can earn more if he plays well, if he plays as expected we will probably take up option and he extends his career another year to make a play at another contract, if he doesn’t play well then he’s in the same position he would’ve been with 2 year contract.

Anyway club option is only one option. I feel 2 years is a good middle ground but that 3rd year carries significant risk and Nrown has to be prepared to carry either some of the risk or some of the cost

A club option has no value to a player but potential downsides. So why would he accept a contract with a club option for a third year if he can get the same contract for two years onlt at the same price? Of course you might set the third year option higher than the club would like, or have all sorts of clauses, but either way it provides nothing to the player.

What a strange article...

Starts off saying that the Broncos are getting sick of him and he is 1 more f**k up away from being sacked... To then saying that the latest incident is good news for them because other clubs are off him and they'll now be able to re-sign him!!

Why are we going that it’s the same price for 2 or 3? I’m saying that (numbers made up) our offers could be $500k a year for 2 years only or $500k for 2 years plus $250k for 3rd year pending club option.
The outcomes in 3rd year are either:
  1. He goes great guns and could theoretically earn more than $250k - in which case he is worse off if he’s beholden to option (thus the clause to let him off if he gets better offer)
  2. He goes as expected and is theoretically worth approx $250k and we take up option - he’s better off because he has guaranteed contract at that stage opposed to a 2 year contract where he doesn’t have guarantee
  3. He gets rapidly worse and is theoretically worth less than $250k OR we decline the option and he fails to find a contract worth $250k - he is no worse off under option as he is under 2 yr contract.
Right now the Nrown market is a buyers market

Option one he's worse off. If he has a get out clause then the club option is basically pointless. Option two he's also worse off as he can't force the club to exercise that. And he might even like to change clubs or even get offered a further two years elsewhere. Option three is pretty much the same. But if you're offered a contract for 500k per year for two years, or a contract for 500k for two years per year and a club option for 250k for the third year you'd be mad to take the second one. The only sensible reason to have a club option is because you think you might be paying more for the first two years than a player is worth.

The suspension is an interesting one, does the suspension start now? because he's still about a month away from returning due to injury

Not really a punishment in that case is it

No the only sensible option for the club option option is because the player believes that’s what they’ll be worth or more than worth in option year.
Anyway I only mentioned club option briefly as a possibility and it wasn’t even the post Pou quoted. I know that it’s unlikely Nrown would bother with it at this stage in career. But we see him as a risk in 2024(?) so if we offer him a 3rd year, it’s going to come with a cost in some form to Nrown you’d expect
