Olympic Sevens borrow league players

If it was possible for the Aussie Olympic sevens to borrow league players. Would we kill it and win gold? Or is the standard higher than the NRL? You would think having turbo, Mitchell, Teddy, Fox etc would 100% bring home the bacon. Hell why not lease them during the World Cup as well

I think you underestimate the level of the competition. We've seen 2 of the most gifted NRL players of their generation in Hayne and Radradra try to transition to 7s, Hayne couldn't even make the Fiji squad for Rio and Radradra warmed the bench this Olympics. There's a reason why NZ doesn't just send the All Blacks 1st choice backline because it's a completely different game

That really doesn't mean much. Hayne lacked the cardiovascular fitness required as he had just switched from NFL. He had the skills, but not the level of fitness required, and not enough time to get to the level required.

Semi Radradra didn't get much game time because the Fiji 7's squad has been together for years, and spent years together playing, training and preparing. Radradra flew directly from England to Tokyo to join the squad. If Radradra was committed to 7's and the 7's circuit, obviously he would be one of the first players picked.

Rugby Union 7's is not like league where they pick a rep team at the end of the year from the 13 a side version and then spend a week training before playing. They play and train together with the pretty much the same squad for years leading up to the Olympics.

So therefore the idea of a bunch of NRL players going over and doing anything is absurd, glad you agree

Sorry about your reading comprehension skills. NRL players would be the first picked if they decided to switch to 7's.

some league players would probabaly fit in well

My first thoughts exactly when seeing this thread posted…

Leagies are bred for this stuff.

Starting 7

T Carney - the bubbler boy
A Johns - the human sink
M Lodge - the toast of New York
B Fittler - the drunkest human ever (captain)
J O’neill - Schlossy’s shoe-poo-man
C Scott - Taser-boy
M Pearce - yellow dress dog rooter

Yes if they decided to switch full time to 7s, but that's not the debate here, the debate here is whether a bunch of NRL players would be able to just go on loan during the Olympics.

big hit!

Exactly. Energy system requirements of Rugby 7s are unique to Rugby 7s.

Rugby League under Vlandis has practically turned into a 7s type of game with repeat sets, minimal scrums etc to keep the game moving, but with 13 players per team, and Rugby League athletes are struggling to deal with the lactic that builds up during repeat defensive work.

What are we seeing week after week? BLOW OUTS!

Rugby 7s rules have the try scoring team restarting the match. We may need to go that way in Rugby League the way it's going, just to give defensive teams a break.

A lot of people have completely missed my question. The debate wasn’t would they be allowed to go? It was if they went would they win? I thought it was pretty obvious they would never be allowed to go
