Not saying it's the case of no SS in 2022 but the following link still does not include a draw for the Sydney Shield- Ron Massey Cup will have 9 teams in 2022.

NSWRL vaguely hinted a few weeks back when the Massey draw was released that the Shield and Illawarra Cup draws were 'coming' so I'd not think the Shield is gone based off draws on that sub-standard eyesore of a page that they've replaced NSWRL scoring with

Nice to see old team lists and results from seasons gone by have been binned by the NSWRL by migrating over to that new site.

Comp is less than a month away and there's absolute jack in terms of details from NSWRL about the structure of the Shield or Illawarra Cup. Ridiculous.

NRL needs to examine the NSWRL board and action needs to happen - mismanagement year upon year upon year is a detriment to the game.
Dave Trodden has no interest in anything except saving his job. But surely that doesn’t surprise anyone.

The illawarra comp doesn't start until April so .....go figure.

With the SS its just so disappointing that NSWRL would not do anything to help Belrose (a really easy fix) or Cabra which would have been not that hard

Massey was up early February so....early March for an April comp shouldn't be an unrealistic preference.

I guess it depends which club needs help. In 2002 there were only 5 teams entered for Metro Cup and although Newtown were in the equivalent of NSW Cup they couldnt afford to run a Metro team as well, so the NSWRL financed them to play as the 6th club while the Metro Reserve grade went ahead as a 5 team cup.

While the NSWRL has its badge on the Northern, Southern and Western conferences, those competitions are run locally and they are responsible for putting the draws up. Newcastle have successfully run competitions for 110 years and they had their draw ready at the same time as RMC. The Group 10/11 guys issued their draw back in November and it was revealed in a NSWRL article at the time, but the locals are yet to put the draw in the system. Illawarra are also a bit slack but it did take 6-8 weeks to firm up their 8th team. But those comps are fairly irrelevant as far as RMC/SS is concerned as the only connection is the gimmick Presidents Cup that runs for 2 weeks at the end of the season.

7 teams in the shield. What a farce from what it once was.

It's almost the ideal breeding ground for those fringe players who aren't Massey/Flegg level but are too good for A-Grade.

Maybe from 2023 onwards, given the new group structures that are trying to solidify non-state competitions, you could have the winners of each group (e.g. Kangaroos in Macarthur, Brothers in Penrith etc) compete at the end of their seasons in a knockout cup called the Sydney Shield.

Can you send a link? I can’t seem to access via nswrl site

The NSWRL have relegated RMC and SS draws to its Junior League site - "my sideline"

When Metropolitan Cup finished in 2002 there were 6 teams in 1st grade and 5 in Reserve grade. Jim Beam started in 2003 as a single grade comp with 12 teams, 4 being from the Central Coast, in 2003. The Sydney Shield started in May 2010 with 4 teams, solely because the Parramatta A Grade refused in allow paid players to participate so Wenty, Cabra and Mounties reserve graders could not play anywhere, so NSWRL started a comp with the 4th team being the Bulldogs in Sydney Bulls jerseys.

Parramatta JRL relented in 2012 so there was no Sydney Shield, however, by 2013 a number of the clubs wanted 2 grades so 5 clubs joined with Hills and Guildford. As the number of clubs in the top grade increased the Shield also increased as single grade clubs joined the reserve grade teams.

But then a number of clubs started running single grades and teams like Belrose and East Campbelltown, who struggled at RMC level were now uncompetitive at Sydney Shield level and then NSWRL encourages Cronulla and St George teams to join Illawarra so Sydney Shield will be the next victim of the continual decline in the code.

You can access the Massey and Shield draws on the NSWRL Website www.nswrl.com.au under Major Competitions. These teams have now been excluded from the main draw pages, another example of how the NSWRL have abandoned these Competitions.
Exactly right - they've completely shut up shop when it comes to anything lower than the state comp and the damaging effect is in full play. The sheer hide of not allowing Belrose to be fed from Glebe is just baffling. Relegating 'major' competitions to some third-rate website that is an eyesore for updates is just insulting. Seems all the NSWRL are interested in is lining their wallets, which can be assumed from that board meeting last week and the collision of ego.
