80 minutes is more than enough. Attention spans are getting less not greater. It’s about quality not quantity. You could make quarters work, similar to how they have drink breaks at the start of season during hot days, but it would need to be 2 minutes at the max, with players not allowed to leave the field. The only change I have ever argued for to extend the length of the game, is that at the end of each half, play should continue until there is change over of possession to eliminate cynical penalties, infringements and time wasting by the defending team. A goal line drop out would also not constitute a change of possession unless the team kicking it, got the ball back.

I'd be fine with quarter time breaks of up to 4 minutes but in exchange I would ban trainers from the field entirely (if players need a drink come to the sideline). This would force coaches to coach from the sideline which is way more entertaining and coach the team up during the QT breaks.

I am pretty certain they make the half time break in origin games longer for money purposes. I could be wrong.

It’s almost time for the annual NRL think tank where the rules of the game are dissected by most of the premier coaches. This is the one where Ricky was told how the obstruction rule was going to be enforced only to find the interpretation suddenly changed as the season progressed.

I think making the team which has just scored kick off would be a useful tweak. This will mitigate every supporter’s pet hate (ie my pet hate) where certain referees go on a penalty/set restart/set restart rampage and before you know it it’s 12-nil and one team hasn’t touched the ball. And the air/interest often gets sucked out of the game as a result.

I’d also get rid of the ubiquitous “set the tone” penalty in the first few minutes of a game. You know the one. A defender is half a step offside and the ref/touch judge/bunker whoever zero in and a penalty is given. On the back of that a team often spends the next 10 to 15 minutes of the game trying to wrestle back the field position they lost , using up a lot of juice in the process. The same indiscretion is then duly ignored for the rest of the game.

I think the Saints will be bad for a long time to come. Imo, they're only adding to the issues. They don't look in sinc as a group and the guys they added only made that worse. In stead of a clean out, they added more guys who were passed it.
Flano has to go and they need a massive clean out.
Saints aren't far off it and a lot better than their ladder position would suggest. Beat both grand finalists and were unlucky to lose some games ones that immediately come to mind are Rabbitohs, Eels, Warriors all close losses that should have been wins to the Saints.

Lack of pace in their backline is one of their main problems. Also an over reliance on the ball playing skills of Gutho because they don’t have creative halves. Their defensive line speed is also on the slow side and sometimes their line doesn’t move up on both sides of the ruck.

I would also use Sloan how he was used late in the season as an impact player off the bench. He came on with about 10 minutes to go just loitering around the ruck in attack then used his speed to slice through and should have pinned his ears but the move broke down. Bring him on say 15 minutes before halftime and full time and hide him in defence the way the Storm did with Hughes when the latter returned weeks early from a broken arm.

They also need to look at their recruitment and retention. It’s not exactly great that 2 of their juniors in Bostock and Tamale have left to become well above average NRL wingers at the Dolphins and the Raiders respectively. Ironically a position that they’re currently weak in .

They threw away at least 10 points on matches they had won last year. They could easily have finished 5th-6th if they weren't football reetarded.

They also have some very talented young forwards about to make their mark over the next few years with the Couchmans, Hamish Stewart, Dylan Egan, and Pasifiki Tonga. What they really need is a controlling half and an elite front rower.

They won't go near the spoon.

As much as I hate the Dragons, Flanno Snr does get his team to work hard and be gritty on the field. That avoids the spoon easily.

He just said something like Atkinson, their prized halfback signing from last season, will get first shot at the halfback spot to play along side Kyle. Not Atkinson is our halfback and there will be a battle for the 5/8th spot.

Saints are going nowhere with junior Flanagan in the side.

Yep, that is Shane's flaw. He can't be objective as a coach about his son ansd how he should not be one of its primary playmakers. Kyle tries hard, I can't fault his effort. His execution and decision making though? Yechh.

That has nothing to do with what I said. I'm not alluding to you winning the comp, just saying he does get the guys to buy in. If the team lacks direction due to Flanno jr running things, it doesn't mean they don't put in, and they have enough talent to avoid the spoon.

All you can hope for is that the Dragons as a whole work out how to tap Flanno Snr on the shoulder and let him know that continuing to play his son is not in the best interest of the team. I'd seem enough of Flanno Jnr at the Bulldogs to know his limitations as a player. Geez, by the end we had him playing hooker which given time is more his skillset though he would never be a starting hooker in the top grade.

The game will never be longer than 80 mins. It's already too hard on the player's health. I could see them making it into quarters of 20 mins though one day. Money always talks.

.
If they went to 4 x 25 mins it would need an increase in the number of interchanges probably up to 14

They don’t need to do it now with nrl ratings up strongly snd three new expansion clubs also (dolphins bears chiefs) with Christchurch to follow

Don't forget the league worst kicking game as well.
