This isn't good news for us, I'm afraid.

And does mean we need to push hard to go elsewhere.

Domestic TV rights may have peaked, as many have suggested.
PVL and Abdo have both met the DAZN boss and they both sound very confident about the rights. Would be a lot of egg on their face if they didn't get a good deal.

Afl has locked itself permanently into the number two position now

Dazn has quickly worked out afl tv ratings are crap and they can’t justify what the previous owners paid

It was funny when these comments were posted months ago and the pro afl accounts said Eddie McGuire was making it up

Future afl tv deals Foxtel won’t be a strong bidder and they provide 70 percent of the total dollars

What a great time to be a rugby league fan

While I don't wish to get engaged in code wars, I reckon you'll find the overwhelming majority of RL fans don't really give this sort of stuff a second thought, and that you're in a very small group who gets a kick of feeling like RL is the better sport

(it is, but the point is moot in this respect IMO. Both are major Australian winter codes who are going to have work hard for their next bag of money)

I hope this doesn't result in crap like wilcard playoffs, to try to get the money.

Whatever way you want to spin it, this isn't the best news
Given the "reduce the games" idea being explored according to recent reports, I'd hope not either. Then again, I've also seen articles suggesting it would only be a matter of time before we followed suit

Yeah only Canard would immediately have a negative take on it for League.

V`landys with his many meetings with Blavatnik is probably the one pushing him to find a reason to challenge the fumbles deal.

Dunno there’s quite a few people on here that are more than happy saying the opposite view

Afl was supposedly the national sport and league could never match it

The nrl still hasn’t monetised that dominance either

I think you’ll find now lots of people will jump on the league bandwagon.

To be perfectly frank mate this is a pretty stupid observation, the majority of people full-stop don`t put much thought into anything.

Looking to relinquish or even lower the agreed contract for our main competitor doesn't mean suddenly we are going to make bank.

If they are considering that for a competitor that achieves 90% of our ratings and subs, than we might be lucky to get anymore than their current deal.

Yes, on here. I was illustrating the point that overall it's not a widely held view by the collective fandom of the game. Even this forum is a tiny portion of people who observe or follow RL.

There’s a spectrum of casual to hardcore

But puzzling to think most league fans in general wouldn’t support the sport being bigger than rival sports that tried desperately to take over in nsw and qld

And you will find as league keeps growing more casuals will jump on the bandwagon and become more hardcore

Most league fans in general support their clubs, go to their games or watch them on TV.

They don't sit around thinking about whether the sport their club plays in is bigger or smaller than another sport.

And your last sentence is literally just the process of population and support growth naturally. As a percentage it will still remain a tiny fraction.

Anyway, I think it's more important to focus on the NRL's strengths and weaknesses as to how it can get the best available deal for the game. Obsessing over what the other code is doing for its deal isn't super helpful. It might make you feel good but that's about it

Do fans get any of the NRL broadcast money?!

If they want to see their star players staying here or their clubs not going broke then they better hope it’s a big deal

15 years ago the nrl could barely defend western Sydney from the giants taking over

Nrl fans in general seem to like the sport growing. Whether it’s expansion, more internationals or Vegas

Seeing a sport which is losing players all the time or talk of the sport struggling snowballs

15 years ago was what, 2010? 2011?

The game was pretty strong back then, record attendances and tv ratings for the time. Obviously has been usurped since but that's a very broad statement you've made.

When the giants came in

Phil Gould was begging gallop for help

Pretty sure afl had almost double our tv deal

Israel folau was gong to get all the islanders from western Sydney playing afl

At the time tigers Penrith and parra were all basket cases or not far off

Afl had two teams in nsw and qld whilst nrl couldn’t even add a second Brisbane side because of the peace deal with News Ltd

They’ve backed the suns and giants to the max with draft picks, double the funding of clubs like wce and anything else they need

Western Sydney clubs and titans got zilch from the nrl

"the NRL could barely defend the Giants taking over Western Sydney" was your claim.

None of the above refutes that.

It just outlines what the AFL did and one ask from Gould.

The game was incredibly strong at the time. Dipped mid 2010s (so, ten years ago) before resurging pre- and post-COVID
