Let’s talk tactics. The Bulldogs love kicking deep to their left via Burton’s huge boot with Kikau and Montoya lining up the opposition right winger. New Dragon Setu Tu will have a busy afternoon. This is not the ideal match up for a rookie but I hope he does well.

The go to play for the Bulldogs in the 2nd half of their finals game against the Panthers was a Galvinator short ball to Preston running a good line. This should come up trumps against a Saints left edge which lacks swift lateral movement in defence. Suli and the Money Man are wholehearted players but they are probably the slowest centre/wing combo in the NRL. Rolling a grubber in behind the Money Man is another tactic worth exploring. Atkinson will also have to get used to communicatiby with Suli in defence.

Kiraz with his sharp footwork , acceleration and deception against the Money Man is also a good match up for the Bulldogs. On the left edge Flanagan , Holmes and Tu will have to contain Kikau .

Saints don’t have a good long kicking game via Flanagan so they will probably struggle with field position. The vast majority of Dragons’ tries come from Gutherson injecting himself into the backline and using his excellent ball playing skills. But he’s a year older and was showing signs of wear and tear last year. Apart from Holmes running a good line or a bit of Sloan brilliance (if he gets elevated to the bench or a starting spot)I just don’t see where the Saints tries are going to come from not just in this match but the whole year.

The Warriors at least have tried to address their lack of pace by signing KP and I think the Dragons need to address their lack of pace across the park. Having your hooker as the fastest player in the team is not ideal.

Tries to Kiraz (2) , Kikau ,Xerri and Preston

wait, are we discussing the score on the field or meat pies thrown at the opposition fans? My prediction was the latter will be a repeat of 2025

Just had a look at the Charity Shield match. Saints look a lot better with Atkinson at half. He has a good long kicking game(45 to 50m) and more creativity than Kyle. So he’ll be defending on the right next to Holmes with Flanagan playing five eighth and defending on the left next to Suli. Gutho played a lot of 1st receiver and did well. I like Atkinson as a player . His path to a regular starting spot at the Sharks was just blocked. And he’s good under pressure.

Doesn’t change my prediction though of Bulldogs by 16.
