If the reasons for barnett moving r legit, there must be some hospital/doctor he has in mind, that or he just wants to be back with family.. not rly sure why we would be part of the conversation where we r based.. but cant blame em for throwing their hat in the ring.. would love some backs tho ;-)

Might work well with keeping LOKO long term

ie just two years for Barnett

and also give u what we need for 2027 and maybe agitate 2026 if we do a swap ?

I suppose the argument would be Couchie and KK maybe our starting props for the next 5 years !!!

the game is so quick now that the 102kg to 106kg props that are great defenders but can make the metres are gold

unless ur Payne Haas 😂
A big no from me, absolutely no point in signing Barnett, he'll be 33 next season and is injury prone.

Agree I can’t see him being on our radar. We have decent nrl level juniors coming through our focus should be to complement them with high level established players preferably in their mid 20’s.

We need a mix of youth and experience; however, I don't think Barnett is what we need. We badly need a prop for 2026 and don't need Lawrie at all.

Not at all. I know when I was 33 I was playing rugby with no issue at all. 33 is nothing . Still young
My point was Daptodragon's age is irrelevant when it comes to his view on whether Barnett would still be effective at 33. Thus I don't know why you were asking him it. Nice that you were playing rugby still at 33. Not everyone can keep it going past that age at NRL level, as we've seen with a lot of previously top level players dropping off long before then. Some are able to continue at the highest level but certainly not all so it's a huge risk which we got wrong a bunch of times under Hook.

Lawrie debuted 2017
This is season 10 for him
But he has done 8yrs at the one club
Ie if Lawrie is on $550k pa he only counts for $250k for 2026?

cook
Lawrie
Holmes
Gutho
Etc all qualify

The NRL's Long Serving Player and Developed Player Allowance provides a cap exemption of roughly $200,000–$500,000 per club to retain loyal or locally developed talent. It applies to players with 10+ years in the game or 8+ years at one club. This allowance helps manage the salary cap by excluding a portion of these veterans' salaries.

I thought they have to play for the 1 club to get the allowance. It should definitely be higher if a player stays at the 1 club like 200k per player not per club for loyal players. Rewards them for sacrifices they make to stay at the 1 club for the fans and not jump ship to join another for more cash.

Didn't they get rid of JDB because he was around that age? They could have just kept him which would end up being cheaper. I don't think Barnett not that much better than JDB, that is a 200k - 300k better player. JDB having the 10 year loyalty clause would have allowed Saints to pay him the same and get a 300k discount off the cap.
Anyone who watched last night can see why JDB was let go, still a solid straight on defender (when they run at him) but he’s on old legs and looks past it.
As an aside, super coach Ryles looks to have done wonders over the off season..

I think there is an amount per club with qualifying players. But you don’t get it for each player - just a reduction off the top of the cap spend.

Fair call.
So does Daptodragon know how Barnett body is? His work ethic to fitness and preparation ?
these guys are physically pampered with recovery and have access to dieticians , Physio’s and a cheeky massage 3 times a week. Look at the COE most clubs have.
So I’m saying if this guy is currently 33 and says he can keep going then he should be strongly considered.
so if daptodragon is older than 33 he would know his body could handle a fair bit at that age.
He would also know he ( Barnett) would bring standards at training, standards in how to carry yourself , standards in preparation and he would also know that Barnett will educate our kids.

he has plenty of gas in the tank and anyone over 33 would know that.
He is a must get if opportunity arises
