I think the trials and pre-season will be the most tightly faught one in years. With so many players, especially in the forwards, i think its near impossible to even guess what the team will be. The promise of a new style of play only adds to the intrigue, and has got me as excited about a new season as i can remember. Now the toughest part is going to be passing the time to next March, but i'm cetain it will be worth the wait as the mighty eels regain the kind of form that took them 1 game away from the premiership in 2001. No team will match there depth in the forwards, and there is nothing more healthy than competition in the squad for starting spots. This in itself will mean a more competitive, hungary team. No one is safe, just how it should be.

Does anyone else think it may be a bit of a battle between Graham and Grothe to fiull Jamies Number 3 jersey when he is on SOO committments. I know Grothes position is on the wing but i think he could do a bit of damage in the centres if used sparingly. If he shows the maturity and confidence which he supposedly found at the Rorters the past couple of years, he could prove some of the critics wrong.
This is why i think we need a little more depth in the 3/4's cause we have the forwards well and truly covered.

Grothe has spent that much time out of footy that I'd be surprised if he doesn't play a dozen or so games in PL first.

That amount of games should coincide with the Origin, which is when i believe he will get his best chance to shine in the blue and gold.

My top team for the start of the year:

1. Luke Burt
2. Ashley Graham
3. Jamie Lyon
4. Dave Vaeliki
5. Matt Petersen
6. Adam Dykes
7. Mick Witt
8. Nathan Cayless [c]
9. John Morris
10. Corey Pearson
11. Nathan Hindmarsh
12. Aaron Cannings
13. Lee Hopkins

Interchange [with form/injury variations in brackets]:
14. Chris Thorman [Muspratt, Webster]
15. Michael Vella [Tsoulos, Armit]
16. Dean Widders [Peek, Leuluai]
17. Daniel Wagon [Muckert, Stapleton]
18. Eric Grothe [Prince, MacKinnon]

Fairly balanced coverage of the positions, though still have to trim down the full-time squad to 25 players...

I think Smith is more likely to use Graham than Grothe. In fact I think Wgon and Widders are also more likely thatn growth to get first shot at a vacant centre spot.

I think Eric needs to show some regular form for the Eels in a regular position (wing or centre) before he'll be considered for a start in firsts.

What about in 2005 when Lyon, Grothe and Graham will ALL be on SOO commitments?

Team I'd like to see with the most games played be players:
1. Burt
2. Peterson
3. Lyon
4. Vaealiki
5. Grothe
6. Dykes
7. Witt
8. Cayless
9. Morris
10. Pearson
11. Hindmarsh
12. Wagon
13. Hopkins

14. Thorman or Muspratt - Haven't seen much of thorman
15. Cannings
16 Vella (or Armit, Tsoulous)
17. Widders

I'd start Pearson and Cayless to do the heavy work in the first 20 with a hopefully fit Vella and Cannings to cause mayhem in the second 20.
Wagon's passing game seems to have dissapeared but he could possibly do the work that Ian used to do in the no 12 - take it up hard and tackle anything that moves.

The only switch I'd have there is putting Muzza in the 5 instead of the 2. He is a bit more of a left shoulder boy than a right, and has worked well with Lex and Hindy on the left this year so I'd keep him there.

grothe played a lot on the left when he was here before, too, and his right hand fends tend to suit that side, but I just think he would adapt better to the right than Muzza would, who seems to be a bit of a left hand specialist. I mean, the guy did score 4 tries in a game there.

Agree. I think it's also important for Grothe to play alongside Jamie. I think Jamie's all round quality and dedication will rub off on Eric and who knows, they may develop a wicked combination that could potentially see them in the sky blue jersey together. After all DeVere was outside Jamie in origin this year and didn't really convince me that much. Origin selectors always like to go for the big powerhouse type wingers which Eric certainly has the potential to become so this could be a big year for him if he's willing to do the hard yards.

Pardon my ignorance.

But I failed to mention the following players.

Kylie Leualie
Chris Armit
Ryan Hinchcliffe

I'm predicting our depth next year to be the best in years especially upfront.
