Ste Tyrer (the biggest talent in England) had a virus so did not travel with the squad.

I just hope Saints fans don't put too much pressure on him and demand he play in SL this season, he is only 16yo and needs a couple more years in the Academy yet.

Wakefield played in two warm up games over the weekend just days before the first team squad jet of to Portugal for the pre season camp...

The squad was split in two for games against York (26-12 win) and Castleford (33-20 defeat) both squads were supported by players from under 21 and under 18 teams... Monty Betham and Ned Catic debued against York along with other closed season recruits Paul White and Jon Whittle, with David Solomona making a cameo appearance at scrum half during the game; whilst Jason Demetriou and Semi Tadulala returned from end of 2005 injuries against Cas (both scored in that game) Ollie Elima also returned after missing the French internationals with a Knee injury. Young halves Kevin Ratcliffe (vs York) and Andy Speake (vs Cas) showed up well, as Jamie Rooney and Sam Obst are still on the injured list.

Former junior Rugby Union international forward Alex Mockford trialled with The Cats in both games.

I'm actually his mate, played in the same team at school for 2 years (although his a year below me)... sometimes we meet up round town.

Tbf he does'nt expect to be making the first team this season, Daniel Anderson told him personally that his the best youngster his seen in the last 5 years (in both Australia and England).

The lad is just fast, big and strong with a awesome kick at goal.

I've played in the same team as the likes of Clough, Roby and Scott Moore and Tyrer definately has the most talent imo.

PS. he also posts on RLFANS along with a few other lads from the England academy.

Sure, but Oldham made hard work of the win against what was Mainly a well drilled Leeds u21s side, everything went to script with big Baz Mcdermott scoring the clinching try 5 mins from the end of his final game, apart from that it was bloody cold and wet:(, roll on summer rugby, crowd of 3,100 thanks to a sponsorship by Leeds met Uni who bought 3000 tickets to be distributed to schoolkids.

It's only a few weeks til the start of the season, it's probably about time the clubs started to get serious and name their first grade sides for these friendlies, get some proper practice.

In defence of Leeds they have another game tommorow against Harlequins when they will be turning out their first team, hopefully the game on Friday was the first of many Pre-season games between the two clubs and Leeds will be able to send stronger teams, although the one they did send gave Oldham a tough enough workout, they have got a lot of talented kids coming through.

St Helens ran 12 tries past Widnes Vikings in the friendly at Halton Stadium.
Widnes Vikings 6 - 70 St Helens

By Linsey Cullen

An Interception try by Lucas Onyango was all that Widnes could come up with against a strong St Helens side in the Liverpool 08 challenge.

The visitors scored three times in the first 15 minutes and continued to dominate in the friendly at Halton Stadium.

Willie Talau found the Widnes try line first after five minutes, followed by Paul Wellens and new signing Francis Meli, man of steel Jamie Lyon converting to give Saints a healthy 18-0 start.

But Onyango intercepted a long ball to race 70 metres down the centre of the field to give the Vikings fans some hope, helped by Marsh’s conversion.

St Helens were soon back in business though and Cunningham and Moore got their names on the growing score sheet before the hooter sounded for half time.

Both teams showed a few flashes of brilliance; Leon Pryce bossed the park for Saints while David Peachey looked in a class of his own for the Vikings.

Despite their best efforts against the best team in the country, the Vikings couldn’t hold out and the scoring continued in the second half. Matt Smith crossed after only two minutes and Lee Gilmour added another from the corner six minutes later.

A second try of the afternoon for Francis Meli brought the scores to 46-6, before Ian Hardman touched down for an unorthodox try as he kicked forward a pass and raced to get there first.

St Helens finished the game as they started it, a late flurry resulting again in three tries in 15 minutes, this time from Pryce, Garnder and Moore’s second.

And thanks to Lyon and Hooper only missing one conversion between them, Saints returned to Knowsley Road with an impressive 70-6 win.

As for Widnes, this was the toughest challenge the new side have faced, and they were without the inspirational trio of Smith, Cassidy and O’Connor.

Hopefully the Vikings can get back to winning ways in the Northern Rail Cup against Swinton on February 12th.

Wigan by Giants 38-22 after being down 22-6 at one stage, i'd say both coaches would have taken plenty of positives out of the game, neither side was full strength and the youngsters stood out, Chris Ashton for the Pies and Tom Hemingway for Hudds.

I've added the midweek results.

The Wigan v Huddersfield game was interesting,Giants were 22-6 up when they took most of their first-teamers off and put the academy kids on.From there Wigan won fairly comfortably in the second half.
