CRAIG Wing yesterday officially told the Roosters he would be quitting Bondi after signing with fierce rivals Souths - but the Rabbitohs have denied any deal.
In an intriguing day, the Roosters posted Wing's departure to Souths on their official website.
The Roosters claimed Wing told them he had signed a four-year deal with Souths.
But Souths CEO Shane Richardson said: "I'm a bit surprised it was on their website. I don't know whether they were trying to ambush us or not, I don't know what they were trying to do.
"But the deal hasn't been finalised.
"We are keen and probably favourites but no deal has been done. If it had I would tell you so.
"Look at what happened with Matt Orford (in 2005). He was coming here and then went somewhere else."
The contract with Souths will be worth a combined total of about $1 million.
The deal means Wing will return home having spent 1998 and 1999 at Redfern before the club was excluded from the premiership.
The Daily Telegraph understands the Roosters offer was similar to Souths' ? but the Rabbitohs offered a four-year deal, the Roosters two years with a two-year option.
Wing told Roosters chairman Nick Politis of his decision yesterday.
It is understood Wing was not interested in a return to rugby union despite being offered around $300,000 a season to play with the Waratahs.
Wing's decision gives Souths one of their most significant signings.
The Roosters had hoped Wing would stay through loyalty to the Bondi club.
Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan admitted his club was upset to lose Wing, an eight-year Rooster who played in the winning 2002 grand final.
In a statement yesterday, Canavan said: "While wishing Craig all the best, we understand he had to make a business decision."
