Tough to go past Smith and Thurston atm. Nicolau will get his go next year for sure.

In what position? I've gotta admit that i laughed when the Cows signed Smith to play at 5/8 and then Burns to play there next season. Nicolau could've stayed with us and be playing 5/8 in a team that has a good chance of winning the comp this year instead he can't even get a game for the Cowboys.

One of the main reasons he said why he left was to play in that position so unless he learns to play another one then i hope he enjoys playing in the seconds. Oh well Jacko, you made your bed ;-)

that's it for norths this year as they aren't in the finals and have the bye in the last round

MICHAEL Crocker was the star attraction, but Sika Manu and Georg Kepa stole the show as Norths ended their season on a high, defeating Easts 28-10 at Bishop Park.

Doing their best to help Burleigh stay alive in the finals race, Norths led from start to finish as State of Origin hero Crocker made a successful return from shoulder injury.

The seven-times Queensland representative had limited minutes and limited involvement, but still showed the competitiveness and athleticism for which he is renowned.

The clearest demonstration of that came four minutes before halftime when Easts scored a 90m intercept try, Crocker pursuing the much smaller and nimbler Trent Young all the way to the tryline.

Fresh from two big wins, Norths had the early advantage in territory and crossed first when Manu popped a great offload and the ball was shifted wide to Kepa.

Built like a wrecking ball, 20-year-old Manu caused havoc whenever he ran at the defence, at one stage making a 40m bust off his own tryline.

The Devils completed their first eight sets in possession and moved ahead 12-0 when Jason Poppi swept over for a great four-pointer. The movement started with the ball sent to the wrong side of the ruck, before half Russell Aitken switched direction and put Kieran Turner into a gap, feeding Poppi off his hip.

Easts’ fortunes went from bad to worse when two dangerous tackles were placed on report and then Justin McKay knocked on with a yearning gap in front. In fairness, McKay was one of the Tigers’ hardest tryers in the first half and pulled off a crunching tackle on Aitken.

With Crocker injected into the game on the 20-minute mark, it looked ominous for the visitors. But the firebrand forward fumbled with his first touch, coming from an ill-advised offload from James Crombie.

Crocker was then given plenty of running to blow the rust out of his legs, making a bust up the middle after some clever support play. Just a few tackles later Devils half Marc Brentnall ran to the line and sent a ball wide, with Tigers speedster Wade Liddell plucking it off the 10m line and sprinting in the other direction.

Turning and giving chase gamely, Crocker almost forced Liddell to abort a pass to teammate Young, staying on the zippy hooker’s tail until he crossed the tryline.

From nowhere Easts came back into contention at 12-10 at halftime, thanks to a scything try on the hooter to winger Steve Beattie, a standout on a beaten side.

The reduced margin gave heart to Tigers supporters, in danger of dropping from the top five if Burleigh won its last two games.

Resumption of the second half saw spirits dip again however, as Norths dominated and scored three tries to nil.

Manu continued to be a menace, while winger Kepa played some lovely attacking football, including a 60m try straight up the middle.

Others to shine included five-eighth Poppi - who finished with a hat-trick – and prop Will Scanlan, absolutely punishing in defence.

The only dampener on the afternoon was a recurrence of a shoulder injury for Aaron Morgan, who will retire from the Wizard Cup and move north in coming months. Morgan was given the last conversion attempt for the day, but dragged the ball to the right of the posts.

Despondent, Easts officials waited by the phone to hear the score from the Piggabeen Complex, where Tweed Heads snuck home 26-20 against Burleigh. The result ensures the Tigers will make the finals, despite this week’s loss.

Still, the Stones Corner team is drawn to face Tweed at Langlands Park next Saturday in Round 22, kicking off at 2pm. The game could well be a rehearsal for the first week of the finals.

Conversely, Norths has finished for the season in Wizard Cup, drawing a bye in the final round. The Devils will focus their energies on Colts (Under 19s), where they are chasing a fourth straight premiership.

NORTHS 28 (Jason Poppi 3, Georg Kepa 2 tries; Kieran Turner 4 goals) d EASTS 10 (Steve Beattie, Trent Young tries; Matt Lockyer goal) at Bishop Park.

A HEATED preliminary final has seen Norths progress to its ninth FOGS Colts Challenge grand final in the past decade, overcoming Western Districts 26-16 at Langlands Park.

Despite another defiant performance from rank outsiders Wests, they could not match the firepower of the Devils, who will go in search of a fourth straight premiership against Tweed Heads next Saturday.

Norths, chock-full of Melbourne Storm development players, led 16-6 at halftime but did not seal the game until 14 minutes from fulltime.

The game-turning sequence came when Wests centre Jack Reed beat half-a-dozen defenders only to lose the ball across the line.

A minute later Devils five-eighth Sean Yorston chip-kicked 40m out, with the fullback running past the ball and completely missing it. Yorston regathered and scooped the ball one-handed to a flying Liam Foran in support, making for a 12-point turnaround.

Norths began the game in devastating fashion, forcing an error from the opening kick-off and then stretching the defence for a try to Aaron Hammett in the second minute.

The Devils revisited the same patch of turf on the right flank shortly after and a strong charge by centre Sam Joe had his side up 10-0.

It was smooth sailing for the reigning premiers, who had all the possession and territory until the 12th minute when half Liam Foran kicked out on the full.

The lapse in execution gave Western Districts the ball 20m out and the Panthers made the Devils pay full price, Luke Churchill diving over to close the gap to four points.

But Norths was next to score when Foran started a slick movement to the right, reestablishing a healthy lead as Jharal Yow Yeh crossed in the corner.

The periods either side of halftime featured plenty of fire.

Western Districts’ substitute Kim Ingebrigtsen was twice involved in incidents that brought the attention of referee Chris Butler, including a sprawling push and shove right on halftime.

Norths lost captain Jay Aston to the sin bin for a professional foul on Brendan Altadonna, while Panthers’ winger Stefan Dippel went on report for a high shot that had Jacob Samoa clutching his jaw.

The more heated the contest became, the more Western Districts appeared to scramble in defence, denying a number of Norths tries by the slimmest of margins.

However the Devils were never headed and Foran’s match-winning try came not long after lock Blayne Harling also crossed.

The final 10 minutes saw Western Districts go hell-for-leather to catch up, but slick tries to Jozey Wilson and Zac Webber could not abridge the deficit.

NORTHS 26 (Liam Foran, Blayne Harling, Jharal Yow Yeh, Sam Joe, Aaron Hammett tries; Ryan Hansen 2, Liam Foran goals) d WESTERN DISTRICTS 16 (Jozey Wilson, Luke Churchill, Zac Webber tries; Daly Cherry-Evans 2 goals)

Seagulls Clinch Colts Premiership

TWO sensational tries from schoolboy Luke Dumas put Tweed Heads on the warpath to its first FOGS Colts Challenge premiership, ending the three-year reign of the Norths Devils with an 18-14 victory at Suncorp Stadium.

Dumas, who also won the Queensland title in the Arrive Alive Cup with Palm Beach Currumbin, was left to savour a remarkable run of successes in 2007.

Still just 17-years-old, the gifted winger struggled to celebrate the win however, pulled from the field suffering nausea late in the game.

His illness came about from a nasty head clash in the first half, remarkably before he scored his second try.

Dumas returned briefly to the field after being bandaged up and, from a standing start, shimmied to attract two defenders, flick passed to Michael Keating down the sideline and then backed up on the inside, pouncing when Keating grubbered off the side of his boot.

That put the Seagulls up 10-4, following Dumas’s opening try, which he scored by flying above the opposition and collecting a Cody Nelson bomb.

In fact it was a game for dazzling tries all-round, with long-range efforts from prolific pair David Moore and Jharal Yow Yeh also getting the crowd to their feet.

The result capped Tweed’s long history of successes in New South Wales country football, opening their cabinet for their first trophy in any of the QRL’s three major grades.

Tweed began competing in the Queensland Wizard Cup in 2003 and later joined the FOGS Cup and FOGS Colts Challenge in 2006.

Had the final lasted another 10 minutes it could have sorely tested the men from south of the border however, with Norths almost coming back from the dead.

The Devils scored tries 11 minutes from fulltime and then five minutes from the end, firstly through centre Jacob Samoa and then substitute Willis Grant.

Poor kicker Ryan Hansen was handed all his shots from out wide, but gave his side a fighting chance by nailing one from the sideline, putting Norths in with a chance of a late game-stealer.

Alas for Norths, salvation never arrived, with centre Sam Joe having two near-misses in the right-hand corner and Luke Samoa held up in a frantic finish.

Tweed’s defence deserved full applause, with numerous try-saving tackles and valiant shutdowns close to the line.

The three-tries-apiece contest was a fitting end to a tight season between the two standout sides in the competition. Both sides won a game each during the regular season and the major semi was decided by only two points.

TWEED HEADS 18 (Luke Dumas 2, David Moore tries; Michael Keating 3 goals) d NORTHS 14 (Jharal Yow Yeh, Jacob Samoa, Willis Grant tries; Ryan Hansen goal).
