Superleague 2009 Franchise Criteria > NRL?

For those that don't know, The RFL have set a criteria for 2009 that clubs must meet in order to participate in the 2009 SL onwards. The criteria is based on crowds, financial performance, junior development, geographical location etc.

Would a system such as this work for the NRL, especially for the Sydney clubs? I believe the NRL should set a date, such as 2012, where only the 7 strongest clubs based on the criteria can be admitted into the 2013 season.

It'd certainly make a lot of Sydney teams wake up and work on their marketing and financial management, which has been the case in England where a lot of clubs have improved greatly off the field since the criteria was set ie Wakefield.

Thoughts?

Not a bad idea. Let clubs prove their worth, still sucks for clubs that are forced to move/merge/get kicked out all together...

great path to go down

will it involve the nrl changing their criteria around at the last minute to suit their wants again? Will it involved an uneven playing field because some clubs are propped up by News, a part owner of the game?

f**k any criteria.

That actually happened 10 years ago if you don't recall. That's why Souths were excluded and other clubs forced to merge. We don't need this happening again. It was an almighty mess.

Yeah.

Criterion such as home crowds and the nature of home grounds are why Souths and Norths got the boot.

They tried this before and it didn't work.
They should get rid of the salary cap and the clubs would kill each other off.

Not necessarily. The reason why souffs were so bad for so long is because they wouldn't spend good money on good players (even when the salary cap was in place). Losing the salary cap will just send us back to the days when you had rich clubs and poor clubs and nothing much that could be done to change it. We don't wan't league to be like EPL where only 2-3 teams have a realistic chance of winning it.

Nah lets allow the lucky clubs who have an NRL place to continue to bump along failing in most areas and stopping our game from growing. Who on earth would expect clubs to have to prove they are worth a place at the dinner table? God forbid we might actually put pressure on them to improve themselves!

The ESL will be a lot stronger because of the model they have adopted. It has already made a massive difference to the way clubs approach the business side of their operations and will ensure only the strongest survive and the rest are not held back by underperforming clubs.

If we kill Sydney clubs, their supporters aren't just going to up and join another team.

Getting rid of Norths etc has just handed union and AFL a bunch of supporters. How stupid would it be to do that again.

The system superleague is using will be useful however, for encouraging new expansion clubs to get involved.

Everyone uses the EPL example, I don't think there are 3 League sides who could gobble up all the best players. Different situation imo.

Whose talking about killing anybody? We are talking about setting goals that all clubs have to attain if they wish to continue being in the NRL. I think that is a good idea and much better than letting clubs continue to limp along year after year and stopping the sport progressing.

Our crowds were fine throughout the 90's. 99 was a bit different but you would think a fair and even balance NRL would see there were mittigating factors in a drop off in crowds (ie not having a home ground for ages, playing a home game in qld before ending up at North Sydney when we were about to move to the CC). If crowds were an excuse that is f**ked.

The lovely criteria also had us as a country team, then changing that at the last minute.
So f**k criteria's.

i agree i think the competiition would be a lot closer then the epl and a lot closer then people think i dont think theres any outrageously rich clubs in the nrl like there is in epl.

Maybe Neil Whitaker can arbitrarily enforce a 10 point criteria again???

The expansionist Super League loonies have been let out of the bag again...

The criteria was a crock, the mother of all uneven playing fields.
It was a joke then, and will be now if ever don't again [as those in power whoever they be, 'manufacture' the result they want].

Lets wipe a few sydney teams, great idea may as well just hand over part of sydney to the remarkably greater 'coined' AFL.
