The Maltese Knights were officially ratified by leagues governing bodies in Sydney last week, with Parramatta Harold Matthews coach Joe Grima taking the reins and nominating next years World 7's qualifiers as their international debut. Already Parramattas Michael Vella, Balmains Ben Galea and even former Rabbitoh Mario Fenech have been named as possible starters for Malta. BEST OF LUCK TO MALTA RUGBY LEAGUE. Anyone interested in Malta Rugby League should contact them on www.malteserla@hotmail.com.

Best of luck to the Malta Rugby League! Was that logo that was featured in Rugby League Week today the Malta Rugby League emblem? If so it looks good.

I applaud the initiative.

How did the name Knights come up? Is it actually related to Malta or is it some bullshit marketing ploy.

The Knights of Malta stem from the monks of the first crusade into the holy land.
Origonaly they were know as "Freres Hospitaliers de St. Jean de Jerusalem" and were monks attachted to a hospice built in Jerusalem to take care of christians travelling to the holy land. They formed in time to be an armed escort looking after the christian pilgrims .
Over the years and as the Islamic movement gained momentum they started to retreat from the holy lands first to Greece then to the island of Rhodes where 7000 Knights held at bay for 6 months, 200,000 Turkish attackers.
With no where to go and little posessions the Knights then moved to Italy until in 1530 they accepted to pay rent ( 1 Falcon per year) for the island of Malta.
In 1556 the Turks attack Malta. After a lot of bloodshed the Knights and the Maltese people held out and the Turks left the island.
Throughout history the Knights and the Maltese people withstood many seiges and
the Maltese Cross represents the eight obligations or aspirations of the Knights.
The Knights are now know as the Knights of Malta. Their eight-pointed cross became known as the Maltese cross.
There you are Jeffles hows that for history?? all taken from http://web.idirect.com/~malta/knights.htm It gives you the full history of the Knights of Malta.

Very good explanation Yanto! You learn something every day on here :)

Makes me wonder if Newcastle have such an affinity with Knights! Somehow I don't think so.

Thanks for the info Yanto. I'm glad there is some genuine significance behind the name. Too often we see crappy nicknames with no local significance. (Were there ever Bears in Oldham?) They are just leeching off the success of other clubs. I'm glad this is not the case.

Is anyone else getting sick of sides like this?I applaud their intentions but until a country has about 200 registered players in their actual country then they shouldnt be allowed to play in international competitions like the world sevens or world cup qualifiers as it lessens the chances of legitimate sides like Russia,Serbia,USA,Holland etc

I don't get sick of these sides starting up. I do get the shits when people keep championing the cause of these countries WITHOUT any development in the homeland. This is why I applaud Lebanon but am sceptical about Greece at the moment.

Malta better have some plans to go to Malta. Otherwise I will get sick of all the talk.

Jeffles you are 100% right.I too am sceptical about Greece,Singapore,West Indies and now Malta.Italy too are starting to try my patients at least they have the odd game there. We cant claim to have an international profile when the majority of teams are filled with players who have Australian accents.

The accents I do not mind so long as the players are 100% loyal ie. They would not turn their backs on Greece if offered a State of Origin jumper.

The ones you arr sceptical about are only new (less than one year). I guess you are less patient than I am. But the problem persists. I do hope that these countries are visited and matches played VERY SOON.

Isn't having around 100 - 120 players playing League week in week out enough of a start for Italy? People seem to forget just how many games are acctually happening either in Italy, or in France with Italian born and bred players.

Guys, seriously - people can stick up for a bunch of non-Anglo Aussies pulling on their heritage colours and saying that they somehow mean that an entire country is now officially playing league...

But first have a look at this - http://www.iafc.com.au/photos/mcphotos.html

This was organised by figures from various migrant communities in Melbourne (including the United Nations team which was made up of asylum seekers).

Now, of the guys playing in that comp, only three have AFLs in their home countries (Lebanon, Tonga and Samoa). If any of the others decided to call themselves their 'national' AFL side I'd put money on 90% of the guys on this forum bagging the absolute crap out of them.

Do you start to get why so many people think you're living in dreamland?
