Eels v Broncos Preview

Parramatta Stadium
Sunday 3pm
“Welcome to Sunday afternoon; could you please take your seat for today’s fixture where you are sure to see plenty of tries!”
There’s no denying it, this is likely to be a high-scoring affair – Brisbane have conceded a club record 138 points in just three matches, and in that horror period they’ve missed an astonishing 153 tackles, while Parramatta have simply been on the end of some real thumpings this year and find themselves near the bottom of just about every defensive stats category – they’re second worst for points conceded per match with 23.5 a game… 12th in the competition for conceding nearly four tries every match… and third last for the amount of metres they give teams.
Brisbane are a proud club with a strong roster. They will not play this poorly for the rest of the year – and you kind of expect that Ivan Henjak will be making sure their run starts this weekend.
As you would expect, Brisbane have made a lot of changes from the side that was humiliated by Cronulla last round. Gone are rookies Dale Copley, Jharal Yow Yeh and Ben Hunt, while Ben Te’o takes a two-week holiday for an awful lifting tackle. Also, Antonio Winterstein can consider himself lucky he wasn’t cut after playing the worst game of his career on Monday night.
In for them come Queensland’s five Origin stars – Darren Lockyer, Sam Thaiday, Karmichael Hunt, Israel Folau and NSW’s Peter Wallace – as well as Souths-bound prop Dave Taylor on an extended bench.
As we’ve seen all season, Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson has been loathe to make changes to his spluttering line-up – but Eels fans will be encouraged by his willingness to stick with young halves pairing Daniel Mortimer and Jeff Robson.
Watch out Broncos: Stop the presses, we have breaking news on how to beat Parramatta! All you need to do is limit the amount of damage Jarryd Hayne can cause from fullback…
The Eels have quickly become a tragic one-man-band this season and have shown they really struggle without their number one man – but what a purple patch he is in! In the Eels’ past five games, Hayne has scored five tries, made seven line breaks and is averaging more the 200 metres a match. They are impressive numbers. If Brisbane can nullify Hayne they will go a long way towards winning this match.
The danger for Brisbane is that they are no longer a feared defensive team – they in fact have conceded more points this year (341) than anyone bar the Sydney Roosters (388), and have registered the second highest number of ineffective tackles… again behind the Roosters.
If Parramatta are allowed to offload at will, Hayne will come into the game even more.
Watch out Eels: Where do we start? Brisbane will have been walking around this week like a bear with a sore head. Rarely is this team ever embarrassed by a performance – but that is exactly what happened at the Cronulla debacle, and you can take it as a given that they will want to bounce back.
For all their defensive woes this year, though, Brisbane cannot be accused of struggling to score points. Be especially wary of their ability to break through the middle of the field and create opportunities with a line-break, as they’ve been successful with this tactic to score 30 times this year – behind only Newcastle as far as tries from line-break busts is concerned.
They are missing one specialist, Justin Hodges, but they’ve got the next best thing at fullback… Karmichael Hunt has four line-break busts for the season and 32 tackle-breaks. He’s the hardest-running fullback in the game and a terrifying man to bring down if he’s been given some space to wind up.
Where it will be won: It all depends on Brisbane’s Origin brigade. If their big five can come through unscathed and are able to back up, then this match should not even be a contest.
The Broncos haven’t looked themselves in recent weeks but Lockyer has not played in two of their past three losses (he only played against the Bulldogs). And having Hunt roaming and shouting orders from fullback will put the defensive line at ease as well, while Brisbane hold a clear advantage over the inexperienced Parramatta halves pairing.
If the Eels are a chance to win this – and at home they certainly are – their forwards will need to take control like Cronulla did last round. Despite Brisbane missing just one forward (Sam Thaiday), their pack was well and truly steamrolled by the unfancied Sharks. Kade Snowden, Luke Douglas, Anthony Tupou and Grant Millington are far from the game’s leading enforcers but they gave Brisbane a nightmare they’ll remember for the rest of the season.
The likes of Hindmarsh, Cayless, Moimoi and Galuvao will need to do the same if the Eels are to spring an upset.
The History: Played 39; Broncos 24, Eels 14, drawn 1. Brisbane hold a 12-4 advantage at Parramatta Stadium. There have been some particularly high-scoring games recently, including Parramatta’s 46-point thumping in 2007 and Brisbane’s thunderous 40-8 victory earlier this season. Brisbane have won six of the past nine.
Conclusion: They have looked truly awful, but is it possible to go past the Broncos? As clueless as they have been, deep down you know Parramatta have been just as bad in recent weeks.
If Lockyer’s old legs can back up, Brisbane should be short favourites. But even if he doesn’t…. they will still win.

Preview: Eels v Broncos

Adam Lucius, Sportal

VENUE & TIME: Parramatta Stadium, Sunday, June 28, 3.05pm (AEST)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played 39: Brisbane 24, Parramatta 14, 1 draw
LAST TIME: Broncos 40 - Eels 8, Round 9, 2009, at Suncorp Stadium
WALKING WOUNDED: While there were Queensland casualties left, right and centre after Origin II, the Broncos may have escaped the worst of it. At the time of writing, Darren Lockyer, Israel Folau, Sam Thaiday, Karmichael Hunt and Peter Wallace had escaped relatively unscathed. But this doesn't mean they will all travel to Parramatta. Lockyer pulled out of Brisbane's match post-Origin I and it wouldn't surprise to see the same happen here. Thaiday also absorbed plenty of punishment and may not back up. Jarryd Hayne played himself into the ground but is expected to be right to lead the Eels' attack. Weller Hauraki (shoulder) is gone for the season.
FORM: Form? What form? Brisbane is going like a busted backside after three-straight losses and Parramatta was embarrassingly bad in the Round 14 loss to Wests Tigers. The Eels came into the game on a high after beating the Knights in Newcastle but looked disinterested from the get-go. Someone needs to get inside the heads of some of these Parramatta players to see what motivates them because, apparently, it isn't rugby league. The Baby Broncos were towelled up by Cronulla on Monday night. Ivan Henjak said his players had been 'thrown to the wolves' but truth is the Sharkies had a few stars out themselves and were lacking experience. The Broncs are down on confidence and need to regain it quickly if they are to avoid slipping out the top eight.
WHO'S HOT: Hayne pretty much played Queensland on his own in Origin I and II. The brilliant winger/full-back clocked up 279m in attack on Wednesday night, scored two tries and was a menace each and every time he touched the ball. Parramatta fans, not without reason, are mystified as to why he doesn't turn it on more often at club level.
No one was more surprised than Thaiday when he was named man-of-the-match in Origin II. Slammin' Sammy was very good but he wasn't the best Maroon out there. Still, he is running into some form after admitting he was way below his best at the start of the year. Henjak is desperate for the big fella to take the field in this one.
WE THINK: It's impossible to get a handle on the erratic Eels. How do you go from beating Newcastle away and then fall so meekly to the Tigers at home? You look at their roster and you want to believe they will deliver, but this author has come to the simple conclusion that they are a very ordinary football side. Until Daniel Anderson gets the side he wants, starting with the arrival of Justin Poore and Shane Shackleton next year, Parra is treading water. Henjak warned his side not to be sucked into believing the return of all their Origin stars would guarantee a change in fortune. But they look to have far too much class for the Eels. Brisbane by 14.

Parramatta v Brisbane

Greg Prichard | June 26, 2009

Sunday, Parramatta Stadium, 3pm
Referees: Tony Archer, Matt Cecchin
Head to head: Broncos 24, Eels 14, drawn 1
Last clash: Broncos 40 bt Eels 8 at Suncorp Stadium (Rd 7, 2009)
TAB Sportsbet: Broncos $1.60, Eels $2.30
FootyTAB: Eels +3.5 points
Here are two teams with real problems. The Broncos may only be four points off the competition lead, but the competition table is very condensed and their current run of three straight losses has seen them drop to seventh. Their defence has turned into swiss cheese, with a total of 138 points conceded in those three defeats.
Last Monday, they allowed the Sharks to rack up 46 points against them, and the Sharks had not previously scored more than 26 points in a game this season. That heavy defeat can't be put down to the Broncos having their State of Origin stars out, either. The Sharks were without a host of regular first-graders for various reasons, but still sliced the Broncos up. The defence has softened up whether the star players have been there or not.
It should be unnerving for the Broncos to think they are only three points ahead of the 12th-placed Eels, for whom this season has been a real battle. Since winning two of their first three games, the Eels have won two, drawn one and lost seven. Yet, if they won here, they would only be a point behind the Broncos! You would think the Broncos should be able to steady the ship and win, but the Eels are erratic enough to pull out a performance that really tests them. They did something similar in round 13, when they went to Newcastle and upset the Knights, 20-18. That came straight after the Eels had lost at home to the Sharks, who had a 1-9 record before that. The Eels followed that win over the Knights with a home loss to the Tigers, before having the bye last weekend. Don't be surprised if Jarryd Hayne turns it on from fullback for the Eels. The Broncos are understandably favourites. The Eels aren't scoring a lot of points at the moment, with playmakers out injured. But, at Parramatta, it's a danger game for Brisbane.

Parramatta v Brisbane Broncos, Sunday 3pm (EST), Parramatta Stadium
Record books are useless when these two clash and current form has made both sides almost unbackable if they weren't playing each other. Another impeccable Origin performance from Jarryd Hayne will have his confidence soaring against a familiar Queensland foe, while Origin man of the match Sam Thaiday will also be flying high. The Broncos are looking to arrest an Origin hangover that has seen them concede 138 points in their last three matches, meaning only the Roosters now possess a worse defensive record. Brisbane got the goods 40-8 when the sides clashed in round seven, but that was before the bubble burst.

Laurie says: Another very tough one to pick with the Broncos having so many players backing up. Parramatta is a difficult place to play and the Eels also tend to do well against the sides they are not expected to beat. This is a danger game for the Broncos and they really have to be up to the task mentally to be any chance. I will stick with Brisbane because I think the injection of a few class players will be the right tonic to turn around what has been a horror month. It won’t be easy, but the Broncos to get the job done.

PARRAMATTA EELS v BRISBANE BRONCOS
Sunday 28th June, 3.00pm
Parramatta Stadium
Referees: Tony Archer, Matt Cecchin

HEAD TO HEAD
Broncos 24 wins, Eels 14 wins, 1 draw

FORM GUIDE
Eels: LWWLLLLWBLDLWLB
Broncos: WWWLWWWLLWWBLLL

State of Origin has hit the Broncos hard – they’ve lost three on the trot and conceded a whopping 138 points in the process, and now trail only the hapless Roosters when it comes to the NRL’s worst defensive records.

That trend should change this week.

With their Origin stars back on deck, Brisbane begins a stretch of relatively easy games (Parramatta, Warriors at home, bye, Rabbitohs at home).

What’s more, Queensland stars Karmichael Hunt, Darren Lockyer, Israel Folau and Sam Thaiday have all received a healthy confidence boost from the Maroons’ fourth straight series win, and can put their focus back into NRL football with only an Origin dead rubber at Suncorp Stadium to come.

It’s more than can be said for their club teammate Peter Wallace, who has come under plenty of criticism over his performances in a losing NSW team.

The Blues’ best player, Jarryd Hayne, returns to fullback for the Eels – who are only three points outside the top eight despite a poor start to the year.

KEY MATCH UP
Jarryd Hayne v Karmichael Hunt

After an error-prone start to his Origin career, Hayne has cemented his place as a real star for the Blues, and looks like the only NSW player capable of fighting his way into the all- Queensland Australian lineup.

Still only 21, Hayne is the undoubted star of the Eels, leading the scoring charts with nine tries this season.

Hunt is a terrific all-round fullback who must appreciate returning to the starting team after playing second fiddle to Billy Slater at Origin level.

As well as a rock solid ball-runner and defender, Hunt’s playmaking duties are crucial for the Broncos. With 14 try assists, the fullback has laid on more four-pointers than either Darren Lockyer or Peter Wallace this season.

PUNTERS GUIDE
Head to head:
Eels $2.10; Broncos $1.70
Brisbane surely can’t keep conceding 40+ points every week. They should get their season back on the right track against Parramatta, who have improved of late but still don’t have the firepower to rival the Broncos.

Brisbane by 14.
