Big News for French RL

The president of the largest soccer club in France (Olympique Lyonnais) has stated in an interview (below) that he is looking to field a rugby league side under the OL brand name to be played in a 25,000 capacity stadium (Stade de Gerland).

That might be a French elite team though. I hope he chooses RL over women's football!

It will be a French Elite team, but with Toulouse and others looking to join Superleague, the Elite championship needs teams with sufficient finances to step up to the top tier to keep the competition viable.

My French isn't great by any stretch of the imagination, but isn't that just a snippet about how the stadium is being upgraded, and that it will be suitable for Top 14 Rugby Union, Womens Soccer and Rugby League?

What has been the catalyst for all these developments in France?

The Four Nations.

All of these are still just speculation though, I really hope they copme off but then I hoped the USNRL would kick off in 2010.

I know that Lyon (soccer club) are building a new 62,000 seater, which is going under the name OL Land or something. I assume this means they are downsizing Stade Gerland from its 40 odd thousand to 25,000? Is that right? Are they trying to make as much use out of it without just dumping it?

(First sentence is something about a second measure in effect to join something in order to build a large team, cbf reading article to get the context)
I propose that we reduce the capacity of Gerland to 25 or 30k places, with facilities that make a modern stadium for a Top 14 team, a large women's football team, even a Rugby League team. In this case, it would indeed be logical that Lou integrates the investment frame of Olympic Lyonnais. We are discussing this with their leaders

You are very correct, that's pretty much how all this came about judging from the article.

French kids go Ooh La Lah for Kangaroos

By Steve Jancetic AAP Sat, 07 Nov 2009 14:32:34

Cost of a pair of Kangaroos shorts: $39.99. An Australian training singlet: $49.99.
But for a lucky bunch of Parisian school kids, the mementos were priceless and they hounded the Australian rugby league team like they were The Beatles back together again, desperate for a piece of green and gold.
As the Kangaroos held their final training session in Paris on Friday afternoon ahead of the Four Nations clash against France on Saturday, hundreds of local school kids cheered their every move.
Australi! Australi! came the chants, with miniature Australian flags and even a boxing Kangaroos making an appearance in the stands as the team went through their paces.
They oohed and aahed at every Greg Inglis bomb and Johnathan Thurston kick, but it was only after a photo and signing session that things really heated up.
It started with backrower Luke Lewis, who, wearing a 'Movember' training singlet to cover the alcohol sponsor which normally adorns the team's training gear, removed the item and handed it to a lucky fan.
The young boy ran clutching the singlet to a teacher nearby, and soon there were a hundred kids by the bus begging for gear.
By now all but a few of the players were on the warm bus safe from the crisp air outside, but one by one they came out handed out souvenirs.
Then the kids hit the jackpot, team manager Craig Young opening up a bag full of Australian gear and throwing it into the air like confetti.
These are the scenes that rarely get reported.
The last man onto the bus was Thurston.
They swarmed around him, pleading for the shirt off his back as they jammed him up against the bus.
Thurston duly obliged, but instead of throwing his shirt out into the crowd, he pinpointed a little boy off to the side and handed it straight to him.
For those in charge of French rugby league, there's no price on that exercise in public relations.

Brilliant for rugby league.

Oh ok cool, well that puts Lyon in a unique position of having access to two grounds in the near future. I am not the biggest fan of ground sharing, so this is a perfect opportunity for their Union and League sides. And while Im here, Marseille > Lyon:p

The comparisons in culture are stark. Social club owners over there seem to amass as many sporting entities under the one branch. Over here its all very individualistic. I must say I would be much more inclined to follow other sports if say my rugby league team, or soccer team, were aligned with other sports under the same name.

i think thats probably how a team in Paris would work, needs to be seen as a friend not the enemy..mind you i dont think it helps the Harlequins, they struggle for public support

Oh, I wouldn't include England in that equation. I was leaning more towards the southern, eastern and central-west values, where socialism was a bit more acceptable at some stage in the past. The English are too narrow minded for such things
