A former rugby league player has been charged over an assault, with a mop, on two Gold Coast police officers.
Shane Toby Treloar, 35, of Upper Coomera, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday charged with going armed in public and serious assault of two police officers.
In documents tendered to the court, police said officers went to a domestic disturbance at Upper Coomera at 10.30am (AEST) on Sunday after reports that a man armed with knives was outside a house yelling at the occupants.
Police alleged that when they arrived, Treloar emerged from a garage carrying a mop and approached them in an aggressive manner.
They say he ignored repeated orders to drop the mop, yelling "come on, come on" until the officers doused him with capsicum spray.
It's alleged Treloar hit one officer with the mop, causing bruising and swelling to a finger, then head butted another while he was being held on his knees on the ground.
The officer needed five stitches to a head wound.
Defence lawyer Darren Mahoney told the court his client played league for Parramatta, Penrith and Souths for a number of years, mainly in reserve grade.
He said Treloar moved to the Gold Coast to pursue his rugby league career but gave the game away because of injury.
Magistrate Terry Duroux allowed bail - despite police objections - but ordered Treloar to undergo blood and urine tests.
The case was adjourned to December 22 for mention.
