Well, one good thing to come out of this might be that once he makes his mind up and leaves, he can then get his head in the right place for the Broncos and start playing good football.

I'd be happy if we could sign Inglis to fill the void though

They would be not picking Folau because he might be going to Union and instead they pick someone who has only just come back from Union, seems silly.

well we find out for sure if Izzy is going today or tomorrow. Yep Tuqiri left but he has returned so that is good enough for me.

I don't understand why QLD wouldn't pick him. He is still dedicated to Rugby League for this season right?

Recruitment & retention by the current administration is nothing less than disgraceful and heads should roll.

Personally I believe the club's great point of difference has disintegrated over the years. From the start, due to the commitment of Bennett, Morgan and Maranta, there were clear lines of division between the functions of administration, and that of the coaching staff.

This gave the club a huge advantage over the Sydney clubs where managment more often than not intrudes into the football side of the club. Heck most of them were ex-players so they thought they had the right.

The initial model set up by Morgan, Bennett and Maranta meant that specialists in their field, for example Cyril Connell, were free to operate and achieve the excellence which we all saw and enjoyed for so many years.

Unfortunately, News Ltd have crept past those lines of division little by little. Why have we lost that 'aura'? Because more and more Brisbane is operating like all the other clubs in the competition.

In regard to Izzy's leaving ... surely he should sit down and talk to the likes of Tahu, Sailor and Tuquri before making his decision. All three left union on less than pleasant terms. History shows that only those who played significant amounts of union as a child (eg Berrick Barnes, Ryan Cross) fit within the culture of union over the long term.

He'll earn bucket loads, but does he want to have a career or become a piece of side-show merchandise in a very boring show.

From all media reports looks as though Folau is p!ssing off unfortunately :(.

If he does go, who would you look to sign, if anyone at all?

I'd prefer if the Storm could somehow maintain their squad. But that looks unlikely.

A sensible swap would be GI for Folau. But GI's form worries me and I think anyway our squad of young backs can take up the slack (assuming no injuries).

Would like Cronk instead of Wallace. Or we could use Folau's money to finally build up our front row stocks which look a bit thin for proven players.

Or should we use the money only to ensure our young talent goes nowhere?

Without Folau our backline looks pretty poor IMO. Mainly thanks to Hodges being injured more than he isn't.

So I'm not sure spending all our money on forwards is such a great idea.

Like to see a good replacement that will cover Lockyer when he goes. Thurstan would be fantastic but there is no chance, Cronk would be nice but I dont think this will happen. Cronk and Slater, no chance :(

In many ways the initial recruitment of Folou was a sad indictment on the club, which has such a long history of developing quality backs - all the way back from Renouf, Sailor, Tuquri, Hancock, Carne ... the list goes on.

Given the choice between money spent on backs or forwards, it makes more sense to purchase a forward - particularly one that comes with experience.

You would think that with Folou's departure we could buy a forward, and two backs.

Obviously Inglis would be a great replacement ... and we have such great boating destinations up here in Brisbane/Gold Coast ... the contract is virtually signed already1

Realisticly the club didn't sign Folau because he was needed it was just that he wanted to live in Brisbane and he was to good of a player to not try and sign. I bet if Bruno could turn back time he would not sign him though

That may be true ... but the amount of his contract said differently.

Take Folou out of our backline and we're probably in the bottom five backlines in terms of attacking ability in the competition.

Not when we have a fit Hodges in it IMO. Obviously when our fullback steps up we will be right up there IMO.

Brisbane Broncos in box seat to pick up Storm players following Storm scandal

By Brent Read and Stuart Honseysett
April 29, 2010

Brisbane Broncos were already in a strong position to take advantage of the Melbourne Storm salary cap scandal, but the expected loss of Israel Folau could leave them to pick the eyes out of the embattled club.

Folau is believed to be on a contract worth more than $400,000 a season, money that would become available to the Broncos from 2011 if, as expected, he decides to pursue a career in rugby union with the Melbourne Rebels.

The Broncos are in an enviable position under next year's salary cap but the expected loss of Folau would make the club a major player in the market.

The club have already been linked with Bulldogs prop Ben Hannant and Penrith captain Petero Civoniceva, both of whom could return to Brisbane next season. Throw in the possible addition of one of Melbourne's big-name stars and the Broncos would be transformed into genuine premiership contenders.

Even before the salary cap scandal, however, some players were expected to leave.

Storm prop Aiden Tolman is off contract and has been linked with a move to the Bulldogs to replace Hannant, while fellow front-rower Jeff Lima has been offered a release. Halfback Brett Finch is also off contract and has been linked with Newcastle Knights.

The major question is what will happen to the club's big four - captain Cameron Smith, halfback Cooper Cronk, fullback Billy Slater and centre Greg Inglis.

Smith has already declared he has no intentions of leaving, while the other three have privately made it clear they would be reluctant to play against Melbourne if they are forced out. With the exception of Brisbane, few clubs would be in position to match the salaries of Inglis and Slater.

Inglis's deal is believed to be worth $550,000 a season including $150,000 in third-party deals.

"We're not going to be like vultures circling the wounded," Brisbane chief executive Bruno Cullen said.

"We'll let Melbourne work out their problems to what they want to be and if we're in the player market and there is players available, then at that point in time we will look at what's there."

I personally reckon we need a couple of forwards/props. If we end up getting a Storm player then I wouldn't mind Slater or Cronk. For those that are saying we won't get Thurston - you do know he is Brisbane bred.

These young guys say they are looking after their future by signing for big pay in rival sports/codes, but they are possibly taking a risk with their long term prospects after footy? Look at Webcke, Lewis and all the other ex League guys on TV. How many Union/AFL guys in Brisbane have the same sort of job going? I can't think of any. Now a player like Folau could probably isn't cut out for tv but you get my point. If a sportsmans greatest claim to fame is that he is a code hopper then no one really cares.

I hate the Broncos but geez I hope Izzy stays.

we shouldnt be rewarding players looking at jumping to other codes. the last few gasnier and hunt announced it after origin, cos of the deadline folau has he has to annoucne it before. i would ratehr a player who's going to be in league get the spot than someone joining another code.

if thurston said he was going tomorrow than i'd have cronk and prince in the team ahead of him. even if they were both injured i'd rather someone like sandow or tim smith in there than someone who's pisisng off for the $
