SOUTH SYDNEY owner Russell Crowe has used an American late-night talk show appearance to reveal the salary of prize signing Greg Inglis, comparing him to NBA superstar LeBron James while also confirming coach John Lang would be leaving his post at the end of next season.
Crowe, on a promotional tour for a new film, told The Tonight Show host Jay Leno that Inglis's three-year contract with the Rabbitohs was worth $1.8 million, the figure reported by the Herald last week when his signing was announced after the star centre backed out of an agreement with Brisbane.
''In order to put it into perspective for you guys, it's like we just got LeBron James … In the rugby league world it's just gigantic,'' Crowe said.

Asked by Leno what he was paying the 23-year-old, Crowe said: ''It's nothing compared to American money but he's got a three-year deal that's worth roughly about $1.8 million.'' He added that at that salary, under the constraints of the NRL salary cap, Souths were ''tapped out''.
''We have a coach … John Lang, who is going to finish out the year then we bring in the new coach the next season,'' Crowe said. ''We had a plan that we were going to put a little bit of extra money aside for that new coach so he had some flexibility under the cap. That's all gone now.''
The actor offered an insight into Souths' long-term pursuit of Inglis. The former Storm superstar initially decided to swap Melbourne for the Broncos before being convinced to head to Redfern Oval.
''He'd actually made a decision that he wanted to come to South Sydney,'' Crowe said. ''We do a lot of work in the community and we have a deep connection with the Aboriginal community in Australia. He's an indigenous fella. It was in the back of his mind. I'd been trying to get a conversation with him going for about five months but his manger [Allan Gainey] basically just said it wasn't going to happen. Then the team [the Broncos] that he was going to withdrew their offer to him.''
Of his ownership of Souths, and the direction of the club, he told Leno: ''It's starting to come together. I took the team over in 2006, as you know. We've gone from being an absolute basket case to being competitive and the next step is to go from competitive to dominant.''
The Inglis deal is still subject to an official release by the Storm, who are in dispute with Inglis over a $113,000 legal bill they want settled before giving the go-ahead.
The player, though, has joined Souths teammates at pre-season training, although his output is restricted after shoulder surgery.
''There is no release granted currently and I'm not sure there is one imminent,'' Storm chief executive Ron Gauci said. ''We haven't even seen the [Souths] contract yet so as the holder of the existing contract we haven't been able to approve it.''
Inglis was named yesterday in the Indigenous squad for the All Stars game at the Gold Coast in February but Souths insist he will be unavailable due to injury. ''Our medical people are saying he is not right for the game,'' Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said.
Bronco Justin Hodges was also named but will not play.

Love him or hate him, i think Rusty is good for rugby league.

The AFL would kill to have such a high profile international celebrity promoting their horrible game.

name me one other person in the world that could get as much publicity for a club/ the game as Crowe manages. If the NRL had any sense they would be working with him to have a coordinated effort to use him as an ambassador for the game and to tap into his contacts.

Big Mikey must love Souths as he never has his hoodie off in American Chopper!

Dude...9th was only a disappointment for Souths fans. For everybody else they got about where they were expected. No halves equals no chance. You'll struggle again to make the 8.

If these halves are so terrible why did we get the 2nd most points in 2010? Are they perfect? No, but they weren't our biggest problem. That was terrible defense, which is our number 1 priority this offseason. Top 4 here we come.

I admire your enthusiasm, and wish them all the best, Souths doing decently well into the pointy end of the season would be good for the game etc.

BUT, I have supported a team of champions (2005) and a champion team (2009 and 2010), now you don't have to throw your mind back that far to see which one of them came up trumps.

BTW, I exclude the storms team of champions because we all know what happened there.

As close as Saints "team of champions" came in 2005, and in retrospect of what Melbourne were doing in 2006, probably should have taken the 2006 title - it wasn't until Bailey, Ryles, Timmins, Thompson ,Barrett etc were gone and replaced with little known workers that they won the bloody thing.

just because someone announces something on a US talk show, doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing...

Heard Crowe say signing Inglis was the equivalent of LeBron James

lol

LeBron earns more money in 12 months than Inglis will make in his career.

LeBron is known in many more countries and watched by a much larger audience than Gary Ingles too

So how are they going to re-sign Luke?

Until Sandow learns to tackle, which isn't going to happen, you've got a massive hole up in the middle which teams will target every game.

On the story as a whole, great work from Rusty. It's great to se someone so internationally famous promoting the game of rugby league, especially to such a large audience that Leno would get. If only Souths could get their act together on the field, they'd easily be Australia's most marketable sporting side.

Eric Bana is not even close to Crowe when it comes to international stardom.

Doesn't matter, the shows they are on are watched by the same amount of people, just because Crowe is a little bit more famous doesn't mean they will listen to him more then what Bana says

That's not his point. His point is Greg Inglis to rugby league is like LeBron James to basketball. He's making the comparison to highlight Inglis' stature in the NRL and that recruiting Inglis to your NRL side is as big a coup as recruiting James for your NBA side.

Pfft, if your biggest problem is your half backs defence then your going well. The problem is Souths just aren't hiding Sandow in the defence line. The stupid little kid keeps going up to make tackles, leaves his arms wide open and slides off defenders. He is a disgraceful defender, but its the coaching staff of Souths that are too stupid to not be hiding him like Saints do with Soward.
