Yep. Expansion would be a necessity if there is that much interest it would help to have more to sell.

There is extra value for the NRL on being solely on FTA. This comes in the much larger audiences and much greater value of sponsorship at a Code and club level. If they wanted to bend Fox over they could sign a 3 year deal with FTA, no expansion (sob!) and come back to the table when Fox is seriously wounded from its subscription loss. Basically sending Fox the message that matching FTA is not enough when you are earning so much out of the game.

I hope not as it would be a disaster for the game in the West.

A lot of responses today are over reactions to a fire lit by a journo who loves sticking it to News Ltd ( quite a few of his stories are based on his dislike for them & this is perfectly understandable as he works for the opposition ). No doubt he's helping push up the price that Fox Sports will pay, which is great for the game. Everyone knows the last deal was a shocker & record ratings on FTA & pay tv will ensure the new one turns that around in a big way.

Tomorrow's meeting won't have any immediate impact on the new deal, as plenty of people keep forgetting that negotiations can't begin until the IC is finalised. Channel 9 & Fox Sports will retain most of their current share of the pie - they know the importance of keeping rugby league in their line-up. ( MNF is the most likely part to be nabbed by one of the FTA channels ).

I know this is just to pressure foxtel, but looking at it seriously, over-saturation needs to be considered in any schedule. To that end the best bet is the maximise games of local interest.

2 x Friday 7:25pm games
3 x Saturday 6:45pm games
3 x Sunday 1:55pm games
1 x Monday 7:10pm game

In all there could be 7 key time slots:

Friday NRL (7pm -11:30pm - with pre-game, between-game & post-game)
* Friday Live (7:25pm)
* Friday Delayed (9:10pm)

Saturday NRL (6:30pm - 11:00pm - with pre-game, between-game & post-game)
* Saturday Live (6:45pm)
* Saturday Delayed (8:30pm)

Sunday NRL (1:30pm - 6:00pm - with pre-game, between-game & post-game)
* Sunday Live (1:55pm)
* Sunday Delayed (3:55pm)

Monday NRL (6:30pm - 9:30pm - with pregame & post-game)
* Monday Live (7:10pm)

Rather than 8 or 9, minimising the saturation effect. And you always get the best game of highest interest live with lower interest games covered by the later time slots.

Assuming we expand, this means:

* You can have at least 1 Qld team broadcast live into Queensland every Friday, Saturday & Sunday
* You can have 1 team from WA/VIC/NZ broadcast live into those markets on each of those days on digital (or Sky in NZ)
* You can have 1 team from regional NSW broadcast live into those markets on those days
* You can have at least 1 team from Sydney broadcast live into that market on those days - plus even more on delay seeing that there's effectively 8-9 Sydney teams.

The strongest matches up would be shown in the live slot and the remaining games shown in the delayed slot.

On a Saturday & Sunday where 3 games are played, there can be 2 games shown in that delayed slot (one on the Main, one on the Digital - especially when it's 2 teams outside of the market).

Read it again. I've stated on this thread previously that LEK have been developing a number of strategies/options for the upcoming deal and it's great that denying Foxtel is one of them.

This isn't actually a speculative suggestion though - it's from the NRL's broadcasting consultants.

their Sydney "news"paper has hardly mentioned the new rights deal or the IC, too busy creating their own stories

Foxtel will end up with some games, its just to get them to pay more which is good for us.

yeah, fair enough to have numerous choices to optimise the deal, but I can't see Fox Sports dropping out of the NRL deal completely

Unfortunately, all that was true last time around. The big difference this time is that there is no rival pay tv operator.

The best scenario for RL would be a new sports-oriented pay tv operator setting up in Australia. But that is not on the horizon and what seems good for the sports coffers may not suit the fans.

Maybe we need the NBN and broadcast laws to disappear before anything like this can happen.

The big difference this time ,News ltd have problems and a perceived image problem with whatt happened and is happening in the UK.They spent $400m to get rl on Pay.if they lose it again,with what happened in the past,and the fact most former SL clubs would have little inclination to do another runner,the chances of a rebel comp,are next to zilch.News need another court case ,like a hole in the head.

It's perfectly reasonable for the league to have a contingency plan for cutting Foxtel out of negotiations. Apart from anything else, it lets Foxtel know that they're not irreplaceable.

Roy seemed to say on radio that the NRL had also looked at setting up their own channel like TVN
