For anyone interested the Royal Australian Air Force Rugby League(RAAFRL) played the South Australian State side last sat, the 8th of Oct at Hansen Reserve in Adelaide. In what was a pretty rugged match the RAAF ran out 20-12 winners. The game threatened to blow out in middle of the second half however the S.A side showed good determination and poise to keep the scoreline close.
There was a good and vocal crowd which showed Rugby League is still alive in S.A

I'd like to thank the mob from the Port Adelaide Cougars and the ARL development guys Dave, Kelso and others for putting a great 7 a side carnival on Tues.
My team from Woodville High won the U16s and we all had a great day.
Hopefully a few of my boys end up playing in the SARL comp soon.

From the SARL:

Welcome to Email Newsletter # 9 04/04/2012

2012 Season Round One:
What a start to the 2012 Season! Close, competitive games and a good turnout from the supporters made this season openner one of the best.

Game 1 – Centrals 2 (26) def Tigers 2 (24)
Tigers second team took on the Roosters second team in an exciting 2012 season openner that saw several former players from both teams come out of retirement. It was a close encounter with the Roosters leading the Tigers 12-6 at half-time. The second half saw both teams scoring points, with the Roosters running out narrow winners 26-24.
Best Players: Brad Gurr (Centrals), Dan Wilson (Tigers).

Game 2 – Knights (34) def Cougars (16)
In a close encounter, both teams showed good form early with the Cougars having a small lead of 12-10 at the half-time break. The second half saw the Knights take control of the game and run out comfortable winners 34-16.
Best Players: Michael Holland, Tamati Matthews (Knights), Shane Frankin (Cougars) had strong games for their team.

Game 3 – Henley (22) drew Eels (22)
This proved to be a very even game from the onset with both teams defending their line well. The Eels had the narrow lead of 16-10 at the half-time break. The second half saw both teams come out and take each other on from the middle of the rucks. Big Kevin McInteny (Raiders) was very strong in the rucks and unloaded some good balls for support players, Scotty Stuart and Alani Halal were very influential for the Raiders. The final scoreline was 22 all.
Best Players: Alani Halal, Kevin McInteny, Scotty Stuart (Raiders). Nigel Denise, Scott Gould, Martin O’Rooke, and replacement Ben Smith (Eels) had strong games.

Game 4 – Centrals 1 (28) def South (10)
This was a very fast game from the onset as both teams ripped into each other. Souths experienced players Anthony Gouldsmith (Turbo) and Heath Tiffin, led the way to give South a 10-6 lead at half-time. The second half saw Souths big forwards tire, and the experienced Centrals players in Dave Robbinson, Adam Levi, and Ash Fatiki (Fatty) take control of the game. Centrals ran out winners 28-10.
Best Players: Anthony Gouldsmith, Heath Tiffin (Souths), Ash Fatiki, Adam Levi, Dave Robbinson (Centrals).

Game 5 – Tigers 1 (24) def North (20)
In a grand final replay, this game was played at an amazing fast-pace with both teams throwing the ball around. Tigers scored two quick tries early in the match, which prompted North to life with their big centre Jay Geerse scoring just before half-time. The second half saw both teams once again throw the ball around. Tigers 5/8 H Taumai troubled Norths defense with his speed off the mark and elusive running style. Brent Strong led the Tigers forward line, with big Ben Wade controlling the ruck areas and halfback Chris Bartlett controlled the attack. Norths fullback Darren Williams showed some strong defense as 5/8 Craig Finitey kept the Tigers defense on their toes. Darren Tyrrel, Joel Miranda and Matthew Justice also had strong games for North. The final scoreline was Tigers 24 to Norths 20.
Best Players: Chris Bartlett, Brent Strong, H Taumai, Ben Wade (Tigers). Chris Finity, Matthew Justice, Joel Miranda, Darren Tyrrel, Darren Williams (North).

Ok so what's happening in SA? Who won the premiership?

How successful was the split into 2 divisions halfway through the season? and has creating more clubs instead of strengthening the reserve grade paid off?

Are the SARL working with the clubs better to get juniors?

Central Districts Roosters won the Premiership in First Grade.

The split competiton wasn't the greatest. I think the reserve grade games were close with the exception of Murray Bridge who struggled for numbers. There were a lot of blow outs in scores of games and forfeits.

I reckon there should have only been 2 or weeks of grading for 1st and 2nd Division, the split in the middle of the season penalised teams who did well at the start of the season then had a few bad games at the end.

The SARL is curerntly running a summer under 18s comp which is apparently doing well. Not sure how other juniors will fare next season

2017

There are 5 teams competing in First Grade in 2017 and they are as follows:
Central District Roosters
Adelaide Hills Tigers
South Adelaide Bulldogs
Eastern Eels
Western District Warriors

We're currently halfway through the 2017 season and this year it is more competitive than it has been in previous seasons. The South Adelaide Bulldogs won the premiership last season and will be looking to go back to back. Central Districts have a strong team this year with a lot of new faces and it's great to see the resurgence of the Tigers back in the competition. Last years easy beats the Western District Warriors are improving and have even managed a win this year against the Eels who are still yet to win a game in 2017.

The Round 9 game between the Central District Roosters and Western District Warriors got delayed due to Centrals having close to a dozen players on state duty. As a result the game was played last night and was a bit of a 1 sided affair as expected- 48-14 .

Eels had the Bye

With the competition expanding to 5 teams this season it has put some pressure on clubs most noticeably the Western District Warriors who are currently struggling with numbers due to injuries and players being away. From a financial perspective the club is solid though. Hopefully the competition can remain as 5 teams. On another note imo the 9's comp should be scrapped and the stronger teams (Bulldogs & Roosters) should field two B grade teams in the 1st Grade comp.

Unfortunately the 2017 Grand Final was boycotted by the South Adelaide Bulldogs so the Roosters have won the comp via a forfeit. Surely questions must be asked now about why a club would take such a dramatic stance and sacrifice their chance of winning a Grand Final!!!

via facebook comments seems like the Souths team were upset at the lack of professionalism shown by NRLSA in suspending a number of their players without due process before the GF. They took the field and then threw the ball away/took a knee/refused to play.

It will be interesting to see if heads roll over this because the league (NRL SA) has been a shambles all season.

Some examples:
Round 1 of the season got cancelled for reasons that were not communicated down to players by the NRL SA.. Apparently it was due to clubs not having enough registered players.

The ANZAC Day test ended up getting cancelled on the night after hundreds of spectators had already paid their admission/gate entry fee. This was due to a lack of players on the Australia side.

The NRL SA not following their own code of conduct/constitution is just the latest example.

The lack of interest/care shown by the NRL to the majority of states in Australia is a blight on the game
