OTTAWA Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby is suffering from a neck injury and concussion, according to statement from the team.
"The diagnosis of Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, is that Sidney Crosby had suffered a neck injury in addition to a concussion. Dr. Bray reports that the neck injury is fully healed. Those findings will be evaluated by independent specialists over the next few days.
"The most important goal all along has been Sidney's return to full health, and we are encouraged that progress continues to be made."
Crosby was in Los Angeles earlier this week visiting Bray, a California-based neurological spine surgeon. Crosby, who has been doing on-ice workouts for the past two weeks, skated while in Los Angeles. He also skated during an earlier trip to Atlanta to visit with Ted Carrick, a chiropractor who specializes in neurological issues. Carrick worked with Crosby in his comeback from the concussion he suffered this past January.
"The good news is he's safe," Crosby agent Pat Brisson told ESPN.com Saturday night. "It's treatable, which is positive."
Penguins general manager Ray Shero did not mention the injury in comments Saturday morning about his star player. He was not available for comment after news of the injury broke.
Speaking to a small group of reporters after the Board of Governors meeting at the Fairmount Hotel here on Saturday morning, Shero said Crosby had returned from Los Angeles and will meet with his team of concussion specialists this week.
"Hopefully we'll see next week where he is. We'll get the reports from California and compare those to what has been done so far," Shero said. "With Sidney, we want to continue to look to see how we can get this under control and manageable and get him to play. Like I said before, he's not going to (play) until the symptoms subside. Hopefully, we'll have him back at some point soon."
Crosby has not played since Dec. 5, when it was reported that he was suffering from concussion-related symptoms, including balance issues.
Crosby missed nearly 11 months from last January to November because of a concussion that was caused by a pair of hits in back-to-back games. He was diagnosed on Jan. 6 and immediately shut down.
Shero reiterated that there is no timetable for Crosby's return, stressing that Crosby will not play until he is free from all symptoms. Shero also said that there was a chance Crosby would skate again in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

As the Pens have always said, they won't rush him back right now because the main priority is his health at this stage, though having read about this is a bit of a concern. He's been skating a fair bit however. They have to take it seriously and will continue to monitor him at this stage.
I'm no expert but he may still play this year but may not its a difficult situation for both sides; though to be honest the Pens haven't really been that bad (they did have a mini 6-7 game losing streak earlier). At the moment Geno's doing brilliantly as is Neal so they're managing.
