Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has made it know that he will be looking for defensive backs in this years draft. He looks on it being the big problem area for his defense. It is quite possible that the team could draft three defensive backs in the draft. And don't be surprised if they pick up at least one in free agancy. I suspect a fair number of the DB's presently on the roster will be elsewhere next season.

http://bloggingthebeast.com/2012/01...nfc-east-teams-talking-to-at-the-senior-bowl/

are reporting that at the Seniors Bowl Dallas showed interest in the following players

The Cowboys talked with DE Jake Bequette from Arkansas. The Redskins coaching staff has been using Bequette as an OLB in their 3-4 sets, and in drills, he’s been working out with the other linebackers, as opposed to the defensive linemen. If the Cowboys let Anthony Spencer walk, they need not just a new starter opposite DeMarcus Ware, but they’ll need depth there as well. Bequette could be that kind of guy.

RB Terrance Ganoway of Baylor also talked with the Cowboys. Ganoway is a big back at 5’11, 241. Ganoway ran all over Washington in the Alamo Bowl, going for 200 yards and 5 TDs. He had 21 TDs on the season. The Cowboys found themselves thin at RB late in the season after they lost DeMarco Murray. A trio of Murray, Jones, and Ganoway would give the Cowboys three unique styles of runners.

And finally, the Cowboys had a chat with a guy that I think has probably helped himself the most so far this week, WR Joe Adams of Arkansas. Very impressive player, but no size whatsoever. He’s 5’10, 174, but looks thicker than 174. He reminds me of DeSean Jackson, but with a bigger frame, and a little less speed. Teams may want him to bulk up a bit in the pros, hopefully without costing him some speed.

they need to start looking for a new DC, not DB's (although both are a concern for dallas)

Inside Out
Two Veteran QBs Not Expected Back In 2012

IRVING, Texas – The start of free agency has been pushed back later than previous years, but obviously not as much as in 2011 when the lockout forced teams to start cutting and signing players in mid-to-late July.
This time around, the new league year begins on March 13 – that is the first day teams can sign free agent players from other clubs. But until then, general managers can start re-negotiating with their own free agents now, with the ability to sign them at any time.
So that's where we will focus this week, breaking down the Cowboys' 16 free agents (13 unrestricted and three restricted), separating them more by cost, than priority.
There are some players on this list the Cowboys likely won't be bringing back for 2012, even though their market value might fit into the team's salary cap plans.
Not included in this breakdown will be the four exclusive rights free agents who have no leveraging power as long as the team decides to retain them. Those players included OT Jermey Parnell, WR Jesse Holley, RB Chauncey Washington and DE Clifton Geathers.
But the other 16 free agents could be on other teams or elsewhere in 2012.

Restricted free agents (3): FB Tony Fiammetta, WR Kevin Ogletree, QB Chris Greisen

Unrestricted free agents (13): CB Alan Ball, TE Martellus Bennett, LB Keith Brooking, G Derrick Dockery, S Abram Elam, G Montrae Holland, LB Bradie James, QB Jon Kitna, P Mat McBriar, RB Sammy Morris, WR Laurent Robinson, LB Anthony Spencer, CB Frank Walker.

From 1-5, the writers of DallasCowboys.com have separated the free agents into a price range, with 5 being the highest.

Today, we'll look at the Level 1 free agents and their possible futures with
the club:

QB Jon Kitna – He's on this level because he actually already has a job and it doesn't involve any NFL team. Kitna has been announced as a high school football coach and algebra teacher at Lincoln HS in Tacoma, Wash., where he was a standout athlete more than 20 years ago. Kitna hasn't officially retired yet because of complex NFL rules and the new league year, but he won't be returning to the Cowboys or any other team, retiring after 15 seasons.

QB Chris Greisen – Technically, he's a restricted free agent, but don't expect the Cowboys to issue the one-year, $1.32 million tender to him. In fact, Greisen probably won't even return to the team unless it's as the fourth quarterback, as the Cowboys will likely be looking to add a veteran QB and possibly a younger undrafted free agent to compete with Stephen McGee as the backup to Tony Romo. Greisen has helped the Cowboys fill that spot for the final regular-season game for two straight years, but clearly he doesn't have a strong future with the team.

RB Sammy Morris – Another low-priority player who filled a timely need for the Cowboys, but probably won't be called up in the future. Morris was a nice acquisition for the team in the final month of the season once DeMarco Murray went down with an ankle injury. Morris backed up Felix Jones and even took most of the carries against Philadelphia in Week 16. But with Murray expected back, along with Jones and Phillip Tanner, it's unlikely the Cowboys would even invite Morris back to Dallas, knowing his minimum salary would be nearly $1 million at $910,000.

Kitna has retired, will not be back. Greisen filled a purpose a season back, but is no longer needed. I wouldn't mind Morris back, but not at that cost.

It is reported that the Cowboys are showing interest in the recently released ex Raider cornerback Stanford Routt.

If the Cowboys were able to get his signature to a contract he would certainly solve one of, if not the number one defensive problem the team has. Routt stands 6-1 and he is taller then any cornerback the Cowboys had on their roster last season. He pulled in four intercepts last season.

Some media suggestion that the Cowboys should place the Franchise Tag on OLB Anthony Spencer.

Spencer is an Unrestricted Free Agent and therefore is free to sign with ever team he wants.

If the Cowboys tag him it will cost them millions more then what he is worth. While he is good, if not very good against the run, his pass rush has been found wanting.

The Cowboys would like to keep him, but I don't see them tagging him.

Their is still a lot of speculation that the Cowboys will place the franchise tag on OLB Anthony Spencer. As I have previously mentioned that would mean the Cowboys would be over paying for a player who while a very good run defender, brings very little to the pass rush.

One of my favourite all time Cowboys was Greg Ellis. He was a DE drafted back in 1998. That was the draft when the Cowboys by passed Randy Moss. But so many other teams did also.

Ellis was drafted to bring a pass rush to the Cowboys def line in a 4-3 def. Much like Spencer was when he was drafted in 2007. The only difference of course was that even though Spencer was a DE in college he was draft by the Cowboys to play OLB in their 3-4 def.

Like Spencer, Ellis was a very good run defender. The interesting thing for the team and fans is can Spencer improve his pass rush and like Ellis, have a better second half to his career.

Their are teams out there willing to pay big money to get an 3-4 def OLB. Being an unrestricted free agent, Dallas have little say in what Spencer does. Their only option may be to place the franchise tag on him.

What ever Cowboys do I suspect that Spencer is heading for a very big money day.

Some people today are comparing Spencer to Greg Ellis. GE had a productive 11 season career with the Cowboys. In that time he 77 sacks. In the first five years his total was 27. So he picked up the pace in the last 6 years where he had 50 sacks.

Spencer has just finished his 5th season as a Cowboy, In that time he has 21.5 sacks. So he is a little down on Ellis's figures at the same time.

The Cowboys would like to keep Spencer. But at what cost? Do they see him improving in the second half of his career, like Ellis did.

Their are teams in the NFL who run the 3-4 def and are in need of an OLB. Being UFA Dallas have little say in where Spencer goes. One option they do have is to place the franchise tag on him.

The Cowboys would love to re-sign free agent WR Laurent Robinson.

Normally teams can re-sign their own free agent players at any time. The problem for the Cowboys is that last season Robinson signed a "minimum salary benefit" contract. It was worth approx $600,000 but only counted around $460,000 against the cap.

Because of this the Cowboys can't re-sign him until he has received other offers.

Cowboys' top 2012 salary cap figures

By Todd Archer

INDIANAPOLIS -- As currently constructed, the Dallas Cowboys have 19 players scheduled to count more than $1 million against the 2012 salary cap.

Cornerback Terence Newman is slated to count $8.016 million against the cap, but the veteran could be released in order to create more room to sign players. If the Cowboys want to count Newman as a “June 1” cut and spread the salary-cap hit out over two years, they will have to wait until March 13 to release him.

The list does not include free agent linebacker Anthony Spencer. If the Cowboys decide to use the franchise tag on Spencer, then he would count $8.8 million against the cap in 2012. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones did not rule out the possibility of signing Spencer to a multi-year deal, but that does not appear likely.

DeMarcus Ware has the highest cap figure at $10.301 million, followed by Tony Romo and Doug Free at $8.060 million apiece. Orlando Scandrick is scheduled to count $7.7 million as part of the extension he signed last summer.

The Cowboys have structured the contracts of Free and Scandrick in such a way that they could dramatically reduce their cap figures to create around $8.6 million in cap room.
