Line betteing essentially gives the favourite a handicap and the underdog a headstart - to a point that the bookie thinks the score will be even. The idea in setting the lines is to have the match as close as possible, hence generally you get odds for the line in the $1.85 to $1.95 range.

If we take for instance the Eels v Warriors game. The Warriors are favourites for this match, and the bookies have decided that the Eels require at least a 4.5 point headstart in order to win the game. On the flip side, bookies think the Warriors can win the game even with a 4.5 point handicap.

If you bet on the Warriors to win @ -4.5, and the score is Eels 10 Warriors 16, you have won the bet because the Warriors won by more than 4.5 points.
