New Sydney A-League team to be announced

Michael Cockerill

April 4, 2012 - 8:46AM

A $4 million windfall from a federal government keen to shore up its vote in one of its traditional heartlands has paved the way for a western Sydney team to join the A-League next season.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard will announce the funding at a Cabinet meeting to be held in Parramatta early this afternoon, and after at least three failed attempts to create a second Sydney team Football Federation Australia has decided to take the leap of faith.
The government funding will be augmented by FFA reserves, a television dividend and a blue chip sponsor to give the new team start-up capital of around $6-7 million, and it's now a race against time to create the club with just seven months until the start of next season.

Former Socceroo Tony Popovic - now an assistant at English second-tier side Crystal Palace - has the coaching job if he wants it, while current Melbourne Heart assistant Ante Milicic is also in the frame. The two former Sydney United players both hail from the western suburbs, signalling the FFA's determination to give the club a local flavour right from the outset.
A chief executive and football manager are expected to be appointed within the next 10 days to kick-start the huge task of building a club from scratch, while Football NSW will become a key ally in the battle to win the hearts and minds of the western suburbs in the face of an AFL onslaught backed by a massive war chest at least four-times the size of the FFA budget.
FNSW headquarters at Parklea will be the training and administrative headquarters of the new team, which as yet doesn't have a name, logo or colours. Parramatta Stadium is likely to be the home base of the side, although games could also be taken to ANZ Stadium, Campbelltown and possibly Penrith as the team looks to widen its footprint.
The local associations of Blacktown and Granville will be the core nursery for the side, with long-time Blacktown City boss Ken Schembri expected to be on the advisory board. The make-up of that board has yet to be determined, but is likely to include a mix of business people, FFA and FNSW appointees, and at least one fans representative.
The official unveiling of the new team will take place at Valentine Park at around 2pm, with FFA chief executive Ben Buckley expected to be flanked by a group of local politicians.

Put on a soccer game. That's a good way to stop the grass getting bored and going mouldy.

why not, Parramatta is central to Western Sydney and it may mean an upgrade to the stadium.

Doubt it. Gillard spends all her money on AFL Stadiums. Over $2.5 billion on Geelong, New Perth Stadium , Adelaide Oval, Skoda Stadium , Metricon , SCG etc.
Meanwhile, Brookie languishes only just above Oh&S standards

I'd say it has more to do with Brookvale being in Abbott's electorate. Besides, who gives a shit about Manly ffs?

after the roof insulation fiasco then school buildings then solar panels would you trust a labor contractor to rebuild your stadium?
we'll get the last laugh on the afl when half of their shiny new stadiums get cracks in the walls or tiles falling off

In saying that, we all bitch and moan about the quality of the services at Parra stadium, and how Brookvale is a dump, but the options are for the NRL to "do an AFL" and get all Sydney teams playing out of 2 quality stadiums, or to keep our badly aging suburban grounds. Having 9 Sydney teams playing out of 10 "Home Grounds" is a joke and there will never be the money to keep them all up to scratch.

I'm sure I'm missing something, HOW is this going to enhance their vote share?

More likely it just gives Mr Abbott more ammunition to use in accusing them of flushing money down the toilet. It's failed twice, pretty sure spending $4million on something that has been proven NOT to work is a good idea...

try $8 million. After all it's Labour, they can spend $2M just to run a tender process and still pick the one they wanted all along.
Ms Gillard will announce $3 million to redevelop the Football NSW headquarters at Parklea, the Telegraph said.
A further $5 million of federal funding will be spent on growing the sport’s popularity in the western suburbs.
