Pirates potential team

Just a hypothetical thread, but what are your thoughts on the ideal marquee signings / coach for the Pirates? Rather than naming all, just coach and the top 7 players (spread over by position). Off-contract players can be found here, but dont have to be restricted to this.

Coach: Tim Sheens - Tim Sheens would be a fantastic coach for the new club. While he may not be the 'best' coach in the league, he is far from the worst. Sheens has a long history of RL, and would be somewhat recognisable in the state.

Fullback: Dean Whare - He is only young now but in 3 years time he could be one of the stars of the game

Wing/Centre: Michael Jennings - While I dont think he will leave the Pennies, you never say never. Penrith will not pay what he is currently on for future contracts. Very exciting player to watch

Five-Eighth: James Maloney - Fantastic player who would play well alongside Tyrone Roberts

Half-Back: Tyrone Roberts - As with Whare, Roberts is only young and could be a star in the future

Hooker: James Segeyaro - would be among the best hookers in the game in a few years

Front Row: Josh McGuire - Only young, but he could be one of the best props in the game in a few years

Back Row: Wade Graham - Wade is a strong, fast and skillful player. Any club would want him and he is just going to get better

Good to see you heaps of WA juniors in the team. Can't wait to watch a TV team full of NSW and QLD players instead of the Broncos (which has mainly QLD jnrs) at 9.30 on Friday Night in NSW.

The CQLD and CC Bears are looking at giving a pathway to their own so they have their own NRL club to play for. A strong part of their bids - developing their own, I guess the WA team can always get the Goodwin Bro's to play for them as they played a few years of juniors for them.

e.g CQLD Taylor and Barba (both wll be great buy for them)

CC Bears: Foran, Pearce, Corrigan, Farrell, Harrison, Heighton, Maloney, Millington, Moltzen, Uate, Wright, Pritchard, Morgan.

Stuffs me why the Bears are not reinstated at the central coast. Facilities...huge junior base.

How many times must it be said... Junior catchments (so long as they are funded and developed) have no relevance to a multi million dollar generating National football franchise. The two are independant of each other (although its nice when they do overlap).

Locating clubs by chasing juniors isn't a good idea (eg, questionable whether Penrith is a good idea, dispite the huge junior catchment -it could be serviced by the Dogs, Eels, Tigers). Sure, CQ generates a lot of players, but is a TINY market for selling the game. CC is likewise jammed in between Sydney and Newcastle.

Please, leave the "Juniors" line of argument asside. Its irrelevant.

Exactly this. Yes it would be good to get back some juniors to the WA franchise, but it would not be good to have your team full of local talent, especially from an RL expansion area. NO club in the NRL is 100% full of local talent

I would like to see a handful of WA jnrs in the squad, just to shut up the whingers on the East coast if nothing else!

We have to remember we are talking the 2015 season at earliest so hard to say who will be around/in form/not injured etc by then. Hypothetically we could sign any of the following to add a WA flavour to the squad: Holdsworth (might be worth a 1 year contract), Paterson (on contract at HKR till 2015), Goodwin wingers (probably Bryson), Jon Green (will be 30 in 2015 so worth a year), Jarrod Saffy (RU, parents live in Perth), Sam McKendry (Kiwi Int, born in perth)

We also have 9 WA Reds SG ball Jnrs currently playing in Toyota Cup (yes Bro Bear believe it or not there are WA players playing in NSW & Q'land teams, can you believe it? Who would want to watch them, lol?) so I hope some of them would be pushing for first grade and come back to Perth.

Ultimately I want to see a winning team with a WA flavour to it. Will take a few years for us to see a lot of WA Jnr's coming through but it will happen if the WARL own the club, not a cat in hells chance if Sage owns the club.

Coach: Nathan Brown if he does as well at St's as he has at Huddersfield would be a good choice, Mick Potter though he hasn't done so well at Bradford, Craig Bellamy outside shot but may be ready for a new challenge after 12 years at Melbourne, Justin Morgn did well at HKR and well regarded at Canberra.

Club manager: Peter Parr (cowboys, ex western reds manager)

CEO: John sackson ( replace with a new CEO for WARL)

They will struggle their first 2 or 3 years on field.

They're going to have to pay an inflated price to get players to move across the country. Anyone worth getting will have a good enough offer from someone on this side of the country. The Cowboys have suffered this same fate for a long time. It'll be tough for them to sign top tier established talent. Their best bet will be to go the Storm route, find the right kids and turn them into the next Smith and Slater.

Storm made the finals in their first year. I think we need to cast the net far and wide for players and uk has some fair talent if we caN convince them to move. Player comments when playing games here has always been favorable and if you like a laid back beach lifestyle, beautiful year around weather but still be in a decent sized city then Perth has it all.

Getting some major corporates to pay 3rd party deals could also be a deciding factor for some top players. We did well in attracting some decent players in '95 so hopefully we can do same.

Dean's a centre.

Very versatile though.

The Storm came into the comp at an extraordinary time. Your own mob, Hunter and the Chargers were all killed in 97 so there was a sea of players with no job, they would have gone to Timbuktu for a gig. Going to Melbourne was no problem. WA will come into the comp in a vastly different situation where clubs aren't dying or being killed on a weekly basis. It will be much harder to get good australian players.

You do have a point with recruiting poms. That would be a source of talent that won't have any reason to favour the east coast over the west coast.

But I don't think you will have the immediate success the Titans had.

I think a move to Perth will suit some Sydney players well tbh

Getting out of the main media attention will be a massive bonus for players. Also they will be successful because all they will have over there like Melbourne do is have just footy to concentrate on

It might suit some of them but they won't go unless they're paid 10% more than their next best offer.

haha, not 9%? not 11%? Didn't realise you had conducted player polls to see what would convince a player to move to Perth! 1995 was a much harder time to build a team with 4 clubs entering the comp yet we had a competitive side finishing a credible 11th out of 20 teams.

Players move all over the world for a variety of reasons, some top quality poms with some good quality youngsters, some returning Perth players and 2 or 3 marquee signings will see us right. Don't expect to finish top 4 for first few seasons but we do need to be competitive and finish in the playoffs fairly quickly. The cities got enough crap teams without adding another one!

Perth will also have that bonus that Melbourne and Brisbane players have, it is much easier to get 3rd party sponsorship deals in one team towns.

Are you saying that Perth is not a desirable place to live? Have you even been there? FMD
Try not reading things that aren't there. I didn't say it's a bad place to live. In fact I said poms are a route they could and should go because they'd have no reason to preference the east coast over the west coast.

But for Aussies, it's a huge life decision to cross the continent. Way diffferent from going just up or down the coast a couple of hours. These people have friends, family, lives, possibly young children, they're not going to be lining up to turn all that upside down.

For the vast majority of players worth buying, they will have offers where they are, if you're getting one offer to play in the next suburb or the same offer to move to Perth. The vast majority will not choose Perth.

For every top talent player worth buying they will have to offer overs to lure them that far away.

And the precedence is there with the Cowboys. I've heard them say they find it tough to recruit players from Sydney and even Brisbane. Thurston was a bench player in 2004 and was offered star money which is the only reason he went. He could have done a Sandow and been a bust. It worked out for them that he turned into the player that earned that wage.

They're going to have to gamble like that and hope it pays off.
