http://www.sydneysixers.com.au/news/2013/07/24/sixers-squad-strenghtened-with-nine-key-signatures

The Sydney Sixers have today announced nine new members to their KFC T20 Big Bash League squad for the coming summer including Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Marcus North and Nathan Lyon.

Once again embracing their love of magenta, Hazlewood and Starc will be joined by Dan Smith and one of the only Poms we’ll tolerate this summer, Michael Lumb, in re-signing for the Sixers.

Aligning with the Sixers for the first time will be Marcus North, Nathan Lyon, Trent Copeland, Sean Abbott and Jordan Silk.

After a competitive contracting period and great consideration around the number of players who may be on international duty, the areas the team needed bolstered and of course who can actually pull off magenta, Head Coach Trevor Bayliss is confident he has assembled a strong squad.

“Michael Lumb has been a great performer for us in the past and we look forward to welcoming him back, and we would expect to see more of Hazlewood this season who is currently performing well for Australia A in Africa,” Bayliss said.

“We suspect Starc will be a regular in the Aussie squad however we are hopeful to see him play a game or two in BBL03.

“Marcus North’s addition to the team will bolster the middle order and Copeland is coming off a strong showing in England for Northamptonshire.

“The batting skills of Jordan Silk and keeping skills of Dan Smith, as well as the addition of spinner Nathan Lyon and all-rounder Sean Abbott will improve the depth in our squad. Depth will be important with a heavy BBL and international schedule coming up this summer.”

With only three spots left for the Sixers to sign in BBL03, the coaching and selection staff will be on the lookout to secure those final few signatures.

The BBL will launch into stadiums and living rooms across the country from December with the Sixers marking the start of the tournament with their home match against cross-town rivals the Sydney Thunder at the SCG on December 21.

The revitalized draw, that runs predominantly post-Christmas and throughout January, will also see the Melbourne Stars (29 December), the Perth Scorchers (10 January) and the Hobart Hurricanes (15 January) head to Sydney to test the Sixers.

Sixers BBL|03 Squad (as at 25 July): Brad Haddin (c), Brett Lee, Stephen O'Keefe, Steve Smith, Moises Henriques, Nic Maddinson, Michael Lumb, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Dan Smith, Marcus North, Nathan Lyon, Jordan Silk, Sean Abbott, Trent Copeland.
Good news all round.

I think.

Besides Dan Smith...

Sean Abbott is a really good pick up and Lyon and O'Keefe offer a very good spin attack. Why do we keep bring lumb back thou he has been pretty rubbish in his 2 stints thus far.

Both really good players on their day.

Only problem is they only have two or three of these days a season.

The Lumb one is a bit strange. He's been pidgeonholed as a T20 cricketer and he's solid on his day, but he's hardly brilliant.

The 6ers are the team that has made the strangest use of the foreign player rule. No real superstars unlike what the other 7 have done.

Having said that, they won a champions league so they must have some idea what they're doing.

In a sense.

The continued use of Dan Smith as Haddin's backup suggests otherwise.

You're right about the odd use of internationals too. Hopefully they can get that Sri Lankan offie Senaneyake back, depending on availability.

Would love too see one of the Australian teams give Tamim Iqbal of Bangladesh a go. He's a gem.

Not too much signing news this week.

Interesting that the Renegades have a home match on what is Day 5 of the Boxing Day Test. Might go along to it.

No love for Shakib al Hasan or Tamim Iqbal?

I'm not sure if it's true but i heard Shakib got an offer from Adelaide Strikers last season but he declined.

Nasir Hossain would also be a great buy for any team. He is the best youngster going around in world cricket.

Eoin Morgan is a fantastic addition to Thunder.

Phil Mustard hopeful of Big Bash deal

Durham wicketkeeper Phil Mustard has targeted a contract for the upcoming Twenty20 Big Bash in Australia.

The competition includes eight teams, each allowed two overseas players in their 18-man squad, while a further two can be used if they become unavailable.

Contracts must be agreed by 6 December and the tournament starts on the 20th.

"Quite a few English lads have played in it these last few years so hopefully someone looks at my CV and decides it's good enough," he told BBC Newcastle.

In the summer, Mustard became Durham's all-time leading run-scorer in 20-over cricket and has now hit 3,104 in 132 innings.

The 31-year-old former England one-day international was rewarded with a new three-year contract.

English players signed up for the upcoming Big Bash League

Alex Hales (Adelaide), Craig Kieswetter (Brisbane), Dimitri Mascarenhas and Owais Shah (Hobart), Luke Wright (Melbourne Stars), Michael Lumb , Chris Tremlett and Ravi Bopara (Sydney Sixers), Eoin Morgan (Sydney Thunder).

In February 2013, Mustard also sought a contract in the Pakistan Premier League but Durham refused to grant him permission amid security concerns.

For the last two winters, he played for the Barisal Burners in Bangladesh's Premier League - another T20 competition - and hopes to do so again.

"It has been a great experience so far and I did sign a three-year deal so hopefully Barisal honour that," added Mustard.

"Ideally, I'd go straight over there from the Big Bash. I've put my hat in the ring even though it's probably a long shot - hopefully it comes through."

Probably a long shot...

Melbourne’s Big Bash sides come up short on profits

PUBLISHED: 11 hours 27 MINUTES AGO | UPDATE: 11 hours 27 MINUTES AGO

John Stensholt

The two Melbourne clubs in the Twenty20 domestic cricket Big Bash League both recorded financial losses according to documents recently lodged with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

The Melbourne Stars, who play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the Melbourne Renegades, who host matches across town at Etihad Stadium, both lost in the semi-finals of the competition.

And between them they posted combined financial losses of more than $600,000 for the season, during which they play four home matches and four away matches.

The Stars made a loss of $162,033 after a profit of $51,253 in the 2011-12 season. The club’s revenue was slightly less than $4.5 million, compared with $3.9 million for the previous season.

The Renegades, which finished first on the competition ladder before losing their semi-final to the Brisbane Heat, made $442,107, less than the $644,922 loss the club recorded in 2011-12.

The competition was eventually won by the Perth Scorchers.

This year’s Big Bash League starts on December 20, with Cricket Australia likely to increase its financial distribution to the eight teams over the course of its new five-year $550 million broadcast deal with Nine Entertainment Co and Network Ten.

Nine is broadcasting all the international matches, including the Ashes Test series, while Ten will show all the Big Bash League matches. It marks the first time the league has been telecast on free-to-air television.
