Relegation for Sydney clubs?

With expansion on the agenda for 2017 and the wide held belief there are too many clubs in Sydney holding the game back is it worth exploring the possibilities of using the NSW Cup as a relegation comp?
For example, 4 Sydney teams would compete in the NRL with the lowest placing team being relegated and replaced with the winner of the NSW Cup.
The advantages of this would be allowing the NRL to expand and a rise in the following of the NSW Cup.

So if you're outside Sydney and go shit, you're immune from relegation? Yep, that'll work.

What if the bottom 7 teams are:

Brisbane
Gold Coast
Storm
Cowboys
Warriors
Raiders
Newcastle

Going by your logic, the team who comes 9, just outside the top 8, gets relegated.

Genius!

not even my ideas are this bad. And some of them include adding extra players onto the field, a three point line for drop goals, an oval field and letting players bring their pets onto the field if they win a grand final

No. Only people with very little understanding of rugby league advocate slaughtering Sydney clubs.

Melbourne still needs massive support from the NRL to stay competitive. Perth will be in the same boat. The Sydney clubs haven't gotten an extra cent in years.

The game survives on ratings and Sydney clubs get ratings.

Just kick souths out again.

They've had their chance since reinstatement and have done SFA, thereby proving the initial decision to kick them out was a valid one.

Yawn. Another dumb sh*t from the land of the failed clubs and poor attendance percentages realising that the number of Sydney clubs = the number of fingers on his left hand - and that something must be wrong.

There is. Your DNA.

Cant wait for this genius to see the problem with NSW cup grounds not being up to NRL standard.

How about we relegate the Broncos? Underachievers - poor crowd percentage from total Brisbane comp, plus the cheating from having extra fingers to grip the ball.

So if this was in place in 2013, Parra would be relegated, replaced by Cronulla. How the hell would you run the comp with 2 Cronullas???

Having the vast majority of NSW Cup teams linked to NRL teams makes this idea unworkable.

So you're telling me that if Sydney Clubs like Cronulla didn't get a cent from the NRL, they'd survive?

Cronulla survives on the same amount every other team gets. If Melbourne only had that much they'd have died years ago.

Now I'm not arguing that Melbourne should get less than they currently do and I'm not arguing that they should be kicked out. That would be madness. Just as mad as needlessly culling Sydney teams that are surviving.

Killing 2 or 3 or 4 famous Sydney brands and replacing them with the same amount of plastic franchises in every corner of the country would ruin the NRL. Ratings would nosedive, income would nosedive, the game would be f**ked.

Why would they be "plastic", every club has to start at some point in time

The term "plastic" is referring to a lack of generational support. This is fundamental to the loyalty of fans , especially in Sydney given that this competition is where the NRL has been spawned from.

It is very important and you only have to see the lost generational and district support from the axing of the North Sydney Bears to see the damage that cutting such clubs can do.

Additional clubs not compromising established clubs is the only way to go! Otherwise we will have the ridiculous super league fiasco again whereby some great clubs are compromised and thrown to the wolves along with their many supporters!

More teams(4 plus in the long term) not the same or less is the way to go.

With more teams other benefits like new fans, more players and greater media spread will naturally occur. The other way is destined for fan alienation, heartache and destruction of the code through diluting its existing strength.

Existing strength(generational support) is an asset which other codes are waiting to pounce on if RL makes the same mistake from the super league fiasco again!

If the NRL wasn't in competition in specific markets with other sports and was by and far the biggest sporting code by a country mile, then and only then in that fantasy world would relegation actually work.

Back in reality relegating clubs is a bad idea.
