    Or they could throw it around more knowing that even if they lost possession or made an error, they have an opportunity to get the ball back.

    More likely to happen if the scrum is a genuine contest for the ball which would make it difficult for a team to leave their forwards out in the backline.

    With scrums as they are now, I agree they’re useless. Proper scrums with hookers having to compete, striking at the play the ball, stripping no matter the number of tacklers, playing the ball forward added richness to the game that’s sadly lacking nowadays.

    I'd like to see them go to 6 replacements rather than interchange. It would add to the fatigue factor and also the strategy as to when to replace certain players etc.

    I think people overstate how rubbish scrums were. They were packed, fed and over and done with in half the time they take today.
