    PNG's back.

Exactly, you could pretty much have a Perth and Singapore team just alternating the same time slot each week. The AFL quite often fit the Perth teams on Sunday afternoon, but it ends up being Sunday night in the eastern states. It's a decent TV viewing time in the eastern states, but nobody...

    PNG's back.

To be honest, as cool as a PNG team would be, a Singapore team still makes more sense. Not dumb at all. Back when Super Rugby expanded, they were tossing up between a Singaporean or Japanese team. They went with Japan, but still played three games a year in Singapore. That shows the appetite...

    WA BEARS

I don't see how I'm trolling. You said including Auckland, the AFL and NRL had teams in the same number of capitals, which they don't, but I pointed out they do have the same in primary cities. I was just helping you structure your argument.

    WA BEARS

Just to be a pedant, but Auckland's not a capital. It's by far the largest city in the same sense all the Australian state capitals are, but not technically a capital (that's Wellington).

    PNG's back.

That's not really an apt comparison. South Africa has US$426b to PNG's US$30b. That's a 14 times larger economy. South Africa also has four cities with more than 3.2 million people each. Port Elizabeth only has 1.3m, and they're the poorer cousins of the league. Port Moresby only has ~400k...

    PNG's back.

The fact that Cairns doesn't get many NRL games astounds me. The AFL has played six games there (admittedly four because of Covid) since the last NRL game. You'd think they should be getting at least one game a year.

    PNG's back.

I don't think it's a good idea, it's a huge commitment and there's just so many obstacles that'd have to be overcome, but I think it just became slightly less unrealistic since the Sollies debacle. I honestly have no idea. How much do teams get from broadcast rights? The Aus govt wouldn't have...

    PNG's back.

PNG may have timed this perfectly. I see no reference to funding, but the Aus govt paying $20m or so a year to keep the Pacific's most populous nation in Australia's sphere could be looking very good for them right now. Perth is still my preferred option, but interesting with the timing.

    West Coast Pirates Bid News

Only a quarter of AFLW crowds this year had only three digits, and a bunch were WA teams forced to play home games in Melbourne. The common denominator between AFLW and Canberra United crowds is clean air from the men's games. I've always found it crazy that NRLW synchs with the NRL...

    The Bears

GWS may be a bit force-fed, but it's not like it was the AFL's only option. Tasmania has been begging for a team to the point they've had to make threats. I'm a fan of both league and AFL (is that even allowed on this site) and I think Canberra could easily host an AFL team without the effort...

    Interesting from Laurie Daley

You can't blame the guy for being on the international board and not understanding the context. @cumbrian Mackem , fumbleball is AFL/Aussie Rules. It has no relevance to the Kangaroos' lack of national games, not even any relevance in this thread. But it's used as an internal measuring stick...

    West Coast Pirates Bid News

The bottom part looks like a black and yellow version of the traditional Port Adelaide jumper in the AFL (their Magpies one). Would look great on a jersey. I really like the WA colours, I can't believe they haven't been used in the NRL yet.

Prediction poll - who will get the 18th team?

I think a second Melbourne team would actually help the Storm if done properly (and I’m not saying any time soon). An “us v them” factor gets fans more invested than the average Storm fan is at the moment. GWS is a good example; a lot of people were worried that they’d cannibalise the Swans’...

Prediction poll - who will get the 18th team?

Completely unrelated. They have Canberra on their guernseys, but that's just because of a sponsorship. They'd still be called GWS if it ended. The Sydney Thunder seem to have a similar deal with Canberra in the BBL, too.

Prediction poll - who will get the 18th team?

The term "Greater Western Sydney" has been used by the government since at least the '90s, it's a relatively well-defined location. Not something the AFL just pulled out of a hat. Sure it's a bit cringey and a bit of a mouthful, they probably should have just gone with "Western Sydney", but...

    Southern Orcas (NZ2)

I think the best option for a second NZ side, would be for a second Auckland side, but give them different geographic names. Revert the Warriors to the Auckland Warriors, they'll retain the majority of the support in Auckland. Make the second team the "New Zealand Whatevers". Base them in...

18th team still possible this tv deal

The Quokkas would definitely stand out on the world stage. Every time a celebrity poses with one, and everyone googles it, the Perth Quokkas would be second on the search engine. It's an easy choice for a neutral to follow. The Pirates would only be on page 2 or 3, and behind at least two...

    Southern Orcas (NZ2)

I'm not a Sydneysider, but would it have made more sense to merge South Sydney and St George, and Cronulla and Illawarra? Otherwise the territories seem to look a bit like a chessboard on the map.
